More than 1,000 youths who graduated from the Voluntary National Service (VNS) Training Programme are set to benefit from one-year apprenticeship opportunities under a new government initiative aimed at promoting youth employment and skills development.
Minister of Defence Ambrose Lufuma announced that the apprenticeship programme will be implemented through a partnership between the Ministry of Labour and Social Services and the International Labour Organization.
The announcement was made during the graduation ceremony for the first cohort of the Voluntary National Service Training Programme held at the Zambia National Service Wilford Funjika Training School in Kabwe.
More than 1,000 trainees completed nine months of training at ZNS centres located in Kitwe, Kasama and Katete.
Speaking during the ceremony, Lufuma described the programme as a major step in empowering young people with practical skills and work experience.
“This graduation is a defining moment in our history. Thanks to President Hakainde Hichilema for reviving this life-changing programme which has given youths an opportunity to gain skills,” Lufuma said.
He added that the programme not only equips youths with vocational skills, but also promotes discipline, entrepreneurship and patriotism.
Meanwhile, Maliti Solochi encouraged graduates to use the knowledge and skills acquired during training to improve their livelihoods and make meaningful contributions to society.
“Apply your skills, let your conduct speak for you and let your success inspire others,” Lt Gen Solochi said.
Outstanding students in various trades received starter packs including sewing machines, wheelbarrows, cookstoves and other equipment to support them in starting small businesses.
Graduates were trained in various fields such as food production, auto mechanics, masonry, plumbing, metal fabrication, shoe making and general agriculture.
