A high level tripatite conference on the North South Corridor has opened in Lusaka.

The conference at Lusaka’s Mulungushi International Conference Centre, has attracted several delegates, including three heads of state.

The presidents who are in the country for the conference are Kenya’s Mwai Kibaki, Kgalema Mothlante of South Africa and Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni.

The North-South Corridor Pilot Aid for Trade Programme is a joint COMESA-East African Community -SADC- initiative that aims to reduce the time and the costs of surface transport.

President Rupiah Banda has called on Africa to improve its infrastructure to remain competitive in the world economy.

Mr Banda says studies have shown that high transport costs impact negatively on Africa’s trade.

He was speaking in Lusaka when he opened the North South corridor aid for trade conference.

The conference has been called to mobilise resources from the donor community and the private sector for infrastructure development in East and Southern Africa.

President Banda said the conference will not only focus on infrastructure development but also on the customs procedures in COMESA, SADC and East African Community,EAC.

The North South Corridor is an initiative of COMESA, SADC and EAC.

  1. Rupiah, Improve your own infrastructure at home before calling on other to do the same. dude, you are tripping!

  2. Hope we can hear from other countries on how they are struggling to tackle the economic crisis. Still I want to see the youths involved in all this.

  3. President Rupiah Banda has called on African countries to improve on their infrastructure so as to remain competitive in the world economy. Further asked on how best this could be achieved, President Banda responded,”I don’t know. As you are all aware, we were mourning our late President last year and i have only been in office for four months only. Even a magician can not have an answer to your question”. I thank you.

  4. Zambia is a hive of activity and centre of attraction this week for International Indabas. Good exposure though.

  5. Let us decide where we belong,SADCC or COMESA.Jamco,we the youths have somehow been a big disappointment.Look at Cosmo Mumba,Silaupwa and Lifwekelo, they are completely useless.Secondly , in this country we lack a powerful youth movement, thats why they cannot invite us to their indabas.

  6. Thigs are really tough for leaders worldwide but Africans are well-tried in hard times. If we merge our forces and design our own African economic plan, we can withstand the growing external pressures.
The common procedure of examining global economic checks and balances will not help Africa much, because the solution lies in the self-dependency of the continent.

  7. The last time I checked, COMESA, SADC and EAC comprised considerably more than the four countries in attendance. Would I be wrong in assuming the other countries are interestested in practical solutions than “talking” solutions and are therefore directing their energies in seeking solutions than running around from one country to the next at the slightest excuse like some presidents i could name?

  8. Did anyone see Obama in Europe answer questions from the Youth?
I want to see something similar, especially RB on Stage and the zambian Youth asking him questions about the economy and his plans!
The manner in which these meetings are conducted dates back to the broken Hill days. Nothing has changed and so it does not surprise me if some countries do not show up.

  9. WHY ARE YOU SO FULL OF PRAISE FOR AMERICAMNS? ARE YOU THE ONLY JEW IN JERUSALEM TO KNOW THAT THE SAME AMERICANS YOU ARE GROVELLING ABOUT CAUSED THE CRISIS IN THE FIRST PLACE. WHY HAVE YOU NEVER SAID A WORD TO BLAME THEM, BUT YOU INSULT RUPIAH ALL DAY EVERY DAY. OH SORRY YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE ANY BRAINS TO KNOW THAT THE AMERICANS CAUSED THE CRISIS.

  10. # 4 Mrs Thenjiwe Stevens ,
Hello totally agree with you, could also be an indication of peace in the country, though immersed in poverty.

  11. This is a good approach for as long as you our servants (leaders) implement what you come up with unlike just wasting our (tax payer) money on holding these conferences.

  12. #11, Most Zambians vote for peace as already demonstrated in the past. Poverty can persist but if peace prevails, thats the way forward. Hi to you to day..

  13. it is pleasing to see African leaders of different countries confer and share ideas. It can also be a good thing if opposition leaders of different countries once in a while did the same….

  14. Where are all the bloggers gone? They may be scared of the some pictures they see pa LT.
Africans love power and also like giving orders. Look at the two well fed Presidents. Can someone tell them what is best? You will be scared just by approaching them. Umuchinshi is better than food.

Some please teach my fellow Africans to say no to unfruitful leadership. to stand up and fight for the cause.
