international community to consider putting in place
mechanisms that will help stop the problem of human trafficking that has placed women at the centre of abuse.
Mrs. Banda said women and girls suffer the most as the perpetrators of the vice use these women as sex slaves. She advised women all over the world and Africa at large to gather courage in order to stand up and strongly speak against such vices.
Mrs. Banda said women hold the answers to their own problems in societies. She stated that the African continent which is the most affected by human trafficking should play a pivotal role in finding solutions to this problem.
The first lady has also described reasons that deprive women from achieving their heart-felt desires as unfortunate. She said women for a long time have been seen as inferior hence have been prevented from enjoying certain privileges of live. She said it is high time women stopped wearing a face of poverty and illiteracy and other work loads that deprive them of their rights to education, physical and spiritual freedom.
She was speaking during the official opening of the All Africa Girls Brigade fellowship organized by the African brigade that is being conducted at the Queens Hotel in Livingstone.
Mrs. Banda has further urged young women in Africa to be prepared to take up decision making positions in order to attain the SADC’s declaration of over 30 per cent women representation in decision making.
She has also advised the girls participating at the fellowship to take advantage of the Government institutions in their countries to fight gender based violence and abuse of women girls’ rights.
International Girls Brigade president, Ruth Chikasa said the girls Brigade aims at empowering the girl child with skills to help themselves in the future.
“Our aim as Girls Brigade is to bring the girls up to be responsible citizens by giving them skills which will enable them to sustain themselves in future,” She said.
The fellowship attracted Girls’ Brigade associations across Africa .
Countries that participated were Nigeria , South Africa , Bostwana , Tanzania , Zimbabwe , and the host Zambia.

just ask your hubby to help create jobs, these women wont risk being traficking in search for greener pasture, this your time and chance to make a diference
Women get trafficked even from countries with relatively low levels of unemployment. The vice is perpetrated by highly organized crime syndicates that reap huge profits from this trafficking of fellow human being.
whats on lips? looks like mwandaba!!
Thandiwe, you are also just a girl who couldnot be trafficked out of the country. At least up to Chipata only. Your father Mr Chilongu is younger than your Husband RB! this is a fact! Chimwemwe girl. Nsanda’s constituency
whats on her lips? looks like mwandaba!!
Well organised speech TB,but i just wish you talked about things more close to us,like th upgrading of maternity wards in Africa esp pa Zed
Double Tobela dont be a fault finder rather make a sensible contributon out of her speech.
Double Tobela,
Thats a Chimwemwe product in Kitwe. What do you expect from the likes of Willie Nsanda’s Electorates? Nosense only
Good call thandie.
Human trafficking is an international problem/syndicate and unfortunately children and women are the most victims. Awareness and sensitisation of such issues might enlighten women and the public at large as to what extent this practice/vice is. Good to know that domestic violence has been enlighten on this topic too.
All the best Madam, thats the spirit. Its circumstances that has led u to u doing that job you dont have a choice. I wish u all the best
Count yourself lucky, you found an old burly to marry you, otherwise you would probably have been trafficked by now
everyone is appealing everyone who is goin to do it kansi? madam first lady u can do somtin instead of just appealing all the time. last time u were appealing for improved medical services again now u r appealing and yet u r the first lady…
Mwashibukeni bane!
Our First Lady has proved to be quite consistent in delivering sensible speeches unlike her husband. I couldn’t make out any sense in his speech on the “economic corridor” thread yesterday.
i don’t like thandi’s make up. maybe am out fashioned…wat do u say ladies and gentlemen???
#13 don’t worry about her make up, just concentrate on her speech.
I heard Madonna was stopped from adopting another malawian child as it was compared to human trafficking by some NGOs.
Those boats from west Africa bringing Africans (illegally) to Europe also comprise of Men and not only woman. These are all the symptoms of poverty. The more poor the society the easier it is for organized crime in this field to take the upper hand.
Please TB and RB fight Poverty with all your energy and most of these complains you air will start clearing themselves. Attack the roots and do not complain about the symptoms.
Here is an example; Before Poland came into the EU human trafficking was on the top Agenda because a lot of people were denied VISA for the West. Now Poland is in the EU and the statistics show low levels of such crimes. I rest my Case.
Good speech madam, keep up the good work
This is a good move Thandie!
Mpopo. The worst first lady was Ba Vera.
Bloggers,i never knew that a lady tests so sweet until 2 days ago when i tried.I almost fainted, hahaha.
#10, was that necessary? Why don’t bloggers analyse the substance of her speech, instead of focusing on trivial things like her makeup or age.
Michelle Obama has a Harvard tested brain but has not exhibited a propensity to being an expert advisor to Americans on any issues upon becoming first lady. What happens to our Zambian first ladies whe they get on plot one (eccept Madam Betty Kaunda of course)?
Remember Vera Tembo Chiluba Mpundu and Maureen Mwanawasa? Now it is Mrs Thandiwe Banda’s turn to be expert on everything because she is on plot one.
Human trafficking is very much an issue close to zambia. It is happening and many girls and boys are at risk of being trafficked. So its about time a strategy was put in place. even within the cpiuntry there could be trafficking.
Number 6..i agree with you!
Ba LT, get new pics for different stories imwe, this is lazyness !
any image consultant to help our lady with her wardrobe?????
What was Thandiwe doing about all these issues before she went to state house. All of a sudden she has all these ideas. If she cared so much about women and children before she would have been heard before. RB and his wife need to go, just too much talk and no action.
Thandie, lets form Thandiwe Banda Community Initiative (TBCI) and replace that of the loud-mouthed Maureen
First lady needs an image builder
Mwashibukeni, this issue is bad news but hope it will serve to deter senior government officials from abuse and potentialy corrupt activities..
When one assumes the role of a First lady, normally one is taken to be a “mother of the nation”. You are obliged by you role to speakout on issues that affect the nation by virtue of your role. So, no suspicions, inuendos or petty jelousies, this is a just a call. Therefore, bloggers, let’s restrict oursleves to the topic at hand. Character assasination, examining looks and fashions etc dont just add up in this particular situation. We all have a background (rich or poor) and some skeletons hidden in some cupboards somewhere. Those who feel that they are angels, let them go to Heaven!
All the prominent people hire image consultants so i don’t think suggesting one for our first lady is a crime, after all she is representing the nation.
Iwe Vinjeru, it is not the issue jelousies or too much loyalties as you seem to have. It is either she has it or doesn’t. Thandie is a good mother of twins and a good wife for RB, period. But that does not qualify her to be an expert on all issues even if it is borrowed opinions from advisers.
Let her leave such advice to come from people like Inonge Mbikusita-Lewanika and others for the nation to follow qualified opinion. Mother of the nation at 27? Come off it Vinjeru,be serious.
# 34, am sorry if you dont understand ledareship and governance, I will try to highlight afew issues for you to think about. Speeches & iteneraries are made and planned for you as long as you a president, minister, CEO, MD or anyone in leadership. There is a reason why, you dont have to be an expert at any particular subject matter. It happens all over the world. This has nothing to do with anybody or my loyalty, for your own info, I dont belong to any political party or render my loyalty to any group. Come back to life and face reality, Thandi is a mother of the nation despite her age. Samuel Doe of Liberia ascended to power when he was 27, his wife was 24, she was given the due respect. So, unless it was you or someone from your clan that is when you salute them? Shame!
