The Environmental Council of Zambia has rejected an application by Konkola Copper mines to establish a granulating slag dump at Nchanga Mine in Chingola.
The ECZ has rejected the project because the proposed site poses a risk to human life and mine facilities.
A statement issued by the ECZ says the project site is in a caving area and has asked Konkola Copper Mines to consider providing an alternative site.
The area proposed for setting up the project is within the Nchanga Mine licence Area and within the Kafue river drainage basin.

Business as usual in Zambia. Please be straight and make decisions that will help our economy.
Well done ba ECZ. These chaps do not care about our environment and lives.
If the decision protects the people, thats a good decision and please maintain it.
The same ECZ approved the location of national milling silos in the CBD of lusaka. how absurd. where is the professionalism? i bet, very soon some politician will intervene and the slug dump will be approved on top of the caving area. years later we are going to have a repeat of the mufulira mine disaster as the result of slug flowing into the mine workings!
Well done ECZ we cant afford to have further pollution in Chingola. Its worse already with more open pits being dug by KCM using U&M contractors.
No. 4, I would like to correct you my friend. ECZ never approved national milling silos. Its the govt (minister of environment) that gave a go ahead to the project. Atleast you’re informed now.
GRZ cannot afford to compensate affected families if serious side effects take its moment **==
no.4 and 6, yes the ministers aproved. But it is high time professionals stood up and protested in view of any person doing things which are not right. We need to be proud of our careers and stand out. These politicians just come and go and they are just interested in money. Lets wake up Zambians and refuse what is not right. Thank you ECZ you are trying your best but we have so many poor politicians.
