Government says Zambia is not threatened by the reported massive outbreak of yellow fever in the neighbouring Angola and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Ministry of Health Acting Spokesperson George Sikazwe told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that all Zambians living along the borders with the two affected neighbouring countries are safe.

Mr. Sikazwe said government has put in place tangible intervention measures among them health education and sensitisation programmes in the entire border districts and the surrounding areas.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), at least 225 deaths from yellow fever have been reported in Angola as of this week while 21 people have died in Congo DRC.

WHO has since described the outbreak in Angola as the nation’s worst yellow fever outbreak in three decades.

And Mr. Sikazwe has urged members of the public to ensure safety of their their children from fire as the country enters the cold season.

Mr. Sikazwe advised the general public to ensure children stay away from braziers and that candles and braziers are put out when going to sleep.

He further advised people to use appropriate fuels that will not produce fumes and result in a fire outbreak in their homes.

  1. BA LT, ONE OF THE BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES OF ANY NEWSPAPERS IS TO INFORM THE READERSHIP. DO NOT TAKE IT FOR GRANTED THAT EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT YELLOW FEVER IS. THEREFORE, YOU SHOULD HAVE EXPLAINED TO THE READERSHIP WHAT DISEASE YELLOW FEVER IS, IT’S SYMPTOMS, HOW PEOPLE CAN CATCH IT, HOW IT CAN BE TRANSMITTED, HOW IT CAN BE PREVENTED AND SO ON. JUST TELLING PEOPLE THAT THEY ARE SAFE FROM IT (COPY AND PASTE) IS SUP1D1TY AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL.
“a tropical virus disease affecting the liver and kidneys, causing fever and jaundice and often fatal. It is transmitted by mosquitoes.”

  2. THis copy and paste should end now! The reporter should have asked George Sikazwe some questions instead of just writing that Sikazwe told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that all Zambians living along the borders with the two affected neighbouring countries are safe.
How has the minstry determined that all Zambians are safe? Do they have clinics at the border? Are they testing Visitors from Angola and DRC? Did they vaccinate all Zambians on the border etc etc. We cant be doing journalism for you you poor reporters
