Team Zambia’s 2016 Olympic hopes cut from seven to three

Swimmer Ralph Goveia finished 1st in heat 2 of the 100 meters butterfly at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games but his time was not enough to see him progress to the semifinals.

The Olympic debutant finished with a time of 56.34 seconds but it fell short of the 52.08 threshold to make the cut for the top 16.

Goveia become the fourth athlete from Team Zambia ejected from the Rio Olympics.

He joins Mathews Punza in the Judo, boxer Ben Muziyo and swimmer Jade Howard eliminated from the Olympics.

Team Zambia on Saturday turn their medal hopes to track athletes Gerald Phiri in the 100 meter heats and Kabange Mupopo in the womens 200 and 300 meter heats.

The duo are two of three representatives still in the hunt in Brazil together with Jordan Chipangama.

Chipangama will be the last Zambian to start his campaign in the men’s marathon on August 21.

  1. In Zambia we seem to be building at the top rather than starting at bottom. A few days ago I indicated that we have no sports infrastructure at the grassroots level. All our Secondary Schools being constructed now which our government seem to be boosting about have no sports facilities being constructed alongside. Yes we have teachers houses, laboratories and many more. But what about sports facilities like the gemnesium, basketball and tennis courts, swimming pools, running trucks e.t.c. I know we want to cut down on costs but someone said if you think education is expensive then try ignorance. Unless we change our perception, it will take us many many years to reap medals at the Olympics. Even the existing sports facilities are in a deplorable state not worthy preparing an…

  2. Again you have not reported the facts correctly. Ralph Goveia placed 6th in his heat with a time of 54.84, a new Zambian Record. He placed 38th overall. As with your report on Zambian Swimmer Jade Howard, it appears that you cannot tell the difference between a start list – which shows lane assignments and entry times (Ralph was in heat 2, lane 1, with an entry time of 56.34). These athletes are doing their best times and setting Zambian Records at the Olympics, and you cannot figure out how to even report their results correctly.

  3. Kabange is guaranteed gold in the women’s 300m as it is unlikely there will be any one else competing in this event.
