Quick action by police in Kitwe, Monday evening prevented Copperbelt University students from taking to the streets in protest against non payment of meal allowances.
The students who were led by Copperbelt University Students Union president, Kasonde Mwenda around 19 hours were forced back into campus by police.
Reports say some students fled into the nearby bush when police fired tear gas canisters.[quote]
A ZNBC news crew which rushed to the campus found police officers screening vehicles entering and leaving the university campus.
Union president, Kasonde Mwenda said the students had planned to walk to ZNBC Kitwe studios to air their displeasure at the bursaries committee’s failure to pay them meal allowances.
Mr. Kasonde said the students also want the university management to address the shortage of accommodation at the campus.
And Kitwe District Police Commanding Officer, Nelson Phiri said one vehicle had its rear window screen damaged by the enraged students.
Mr. Phiri said police will keep vigil at the campus.

Mwapia Baisa!
VIVA monk!!!! VIVA moma!!!!! VIVA chuwi!!!! There is no school without money!! Be persistant till govt gives u your money!!! VIVA CBU!!!!!
#6. Actually I have three degrees. which took me many years and from world class universities. As@£%&* Ho£&. That aside Here is a truism that we all take for granted: The most important learning in life happens outside the classroom. Most of what we know as adults we learned it informally. The practical consequence of this — the corollary — is that, in the world outside the classroom, most of what we learned through the formal education system is not useful.
The student’s behaviour is like that of men who have lost his heads!
It seems this thread only CBU Monks and Momas are contributing. BUt demos are mot always the solution. Let them start learning how to resolve some of these issues quietly and peacefully.
Really childish, was I like this at one time?
Ba Kapenda ma bula demonstrating? Ichi course!!
Demontrations and riotus behavious result into non progressive actions many times. They have on the other hand erupted into massive clashes between Government sercurity wings and the perpetrators, the end result being injuries, delays in accademic achievements, death sometimes etc… You believe you guys are supper models for our societies. You should become purpose driven other than money driven. You are more that money to some of us. We know progress for our country is waiting for your humble completion of school. Let your president learn not to use the mob when he wants to solve problems. He is elected for a purpose. Dont act in a way you would conderm in others
how did that chap’s walk to lusaka go?wat did he achieve?did he even arrive?
meal allowances every year, can grz sort this issue once and for all. we are now fed up with the same old story. ma labbish!! mulechusha abaiche na ba machuwa.
am off to Matebeto market for a juicy T-Bone steak and traditional vegies naka wash down. then will just sneak from work for quicky in Chelston
Peacefull and legal demostration are welcome but why is the GRZ always hesitate to pay off students??? and how is our newly opened university copying because its very dissapointing to have a third university when the GRZ is struggling to fund the existing ones. And i fell to understand how the minister of Education is felling to perform despite having a university background .To my fellow brothers and sisters i edge you not to resort to violence no matter the case as the conquences are always emerse talking from experience.
When I was at CBU….demos were a nice social relaxation event… insulting cops…ba grade 7…and having cat and mice runs… I can imagine the mood ysterday!!! Seriously GRZ and Studend in Zed only know one way of communicating…demos..demos…etc.
GRZ has failed by not involving other institutions (esp finance..banks) to be part of the solution as is the case with most developed nations inclusing RSA. Bank and corparate must provide loans to student instaed of making hugh profits. But GRZ need to drive these institution
#13. Uncle Sam. By and large the government only listens when under duress. While I do not condone violence, peaceful demonstrations aimed at putting across grievances are part and parcel of academic freedom and freedom of expression. When is the meal allowance going to be addressed once and for all? I am sick and tired of listening to same hypocritical excuses.
#6 SWEETHEART is on point and to add on, we don’t care how many degrees who ever has, you were privileged to be educated abroad and now you are gloating.people back home. I was at CBU almost 18 years ago and its sad that the same old crap is going on. Only a graduate from CBU or UNZA can relate and if you were not there its best to not to comment about what u dont know
Ba lady Chiza’s leg; which 3 degrees do you have? Your expression is one of a grade 9 drop out? Do you know what it is to study on an empty stomach. Well 3 degrees indeed; Kitchen paties, matebeto and of course ignorance! VIVA Students!
Demonstrate they must, but why do they have to stone vehicles of innocent people? The same people whose vehicles they destroy are the tax payers who pay for their education at the university, this a logical which even a standard three pupil sorry grade five pupil can understand. And before you start accusing me of something, I have two university degrees and I payed my way through university, working a low paying job and going to school. Don’t get me started!
Very childish, kombonic, bushy, village manners indeed. Ataseee
I feel for these students but av always been against stoning innocent victim’s cars. Yeah, VIVA jambo was always fun with the cops chasing your butt. #16 Lady chiza’s legs, why not come to me for a quickie, you wont regret….
