Environment Council of Zambia (ECZ) has challenged government to come up with policies that would enhance waste management at all levels.
ECZ senior inspector Masawell Chisanga, told ZANIS Kitwe in an interview at the 52nd Agriculture and Commercial Show that government’s capacity to manage waste through the local authority left much to be desired.
Mr Chisanga further urged Zambians to prudently take care of the environment in order to ensure sustainable development in the nation.
He said every Zambian should bear in mind the cultural aspect of a clean environment.

Awe naimwe ba ECZ you want goverment to employ more policemen/women when the same goverment cannot affort to pay the the policemen/women who are already in the system.

Just a thought, but you can make biodegradable bags and containers from hemp. This would seriously reduce the problem of getting rid of plactics, which are fossile fuel/oil based. Right now, there is a massive raft of plastic bags, styrofoam cups and wrappers the size of a major country, called the Pacific Garbage Patch, floating in the Pacific Ocean.
That said, where are the garbage collection services. This goes to underline my idea that local governments should be funded with 50% of national revenues, and obligated to provide: education, healthcare, policing and public amenities like garbage collection. Hold them accountable through elections, with the option of calling an election early in case of corruption.
At least some one is talking sense torwards this eyesore menace in all street corners in Zambia.
We have to realise that waste management has to be paid for in Z. Waste management can also provide some form of economic contribution through job creation and recycling.
#3 MrK well said. But are you not too ambitious to think you can eliminate plastics so easily in Zambia? Because even in developed countries like the UK, there is massive use of those things, much as they are fossil based. What I think should be the next step after recognizing that plastics are a problem is to find ways of how they can be utilised sustainably. I have been thinking of recycling them to make classroom chairs for schools. Imagine how a 75kg block of plastic flamboyantly moulded to make a seats for classrooms and parks or even bus stops? That would automatically put some local company dealing in such seats to work at ways of collecting plastics and indirectly, garbage..
A lot of the rubbish could be recycled or turned into energy. The problem with Zambia today is looking, either to someone else to fix the problem or seeking a quick fix.
Higher institutions of learning should be taking on these projects as part of their research.
If we can get people thinking like No 3..then we will move in the right direction. To start with ECZ are the government wing that should develop environmental policies…I suggetst they stengthen the Waste Management Strategy by making it legally binding as the case is in Europe now (at least UK).
Secondly the mentality of Zambians should change…if you do not throw litter anyhow when you just enter Botswana why should you do it in Zambia…this calls for a little bit more punishment
