President Edgar Lungu says investing in young people is the foundation for ensuring prosperity, peace and stability in the Great Lakes Region.

President Lungu has since implored Ministers In-Charge of Youth Affairs in the region to integrate youths in the economic development agenda.

The President has noted that limited employment and empowerment opportunities for the youth provide a fertile ground for instability.

He has however assured that the government will continue creating an enabling environment where the youths will flourish.

And President Lungu says the youths have the right to defend democracy in the region.

This is contained in a speech read on his behalf by Presidential Affairs Minister, Freedom Sikazwe, during the official opening of a meeting for Ministers In-Charge of Youth Affairs from Member states of the Great Lakes Region, in Livingstone.

And United Nations Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region, Said Djinnit, said the large population of youths in the region is an asset for development.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary for the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region, Muburi Muita, said youth unemployment still remains a challenge in the region.

  I am delighted that H.E President Lungu has candidly restated exactly what we have professionally kept reminding the administration on these threads. First we are patriotic Zambian professionals solid in matters of nation state: Socio-economic development, and state security. As patriots we payback to mother Zambia by giving freely the knowledge we have earned. The vices of corruption, poverty, unemployment and lack of equitable development are clear and present danger to any nation state. They increase the risk index putting all national or personal achievements susceptible to fate of reactions. The situation is combustible. Time for political will collectively.
