ACC urges public workers to be tough on corruption

The Anti Corruption Commission has called on public service workers to actively participate in the fight against corruption as opposed to being perpetrators of the vice in their line of duty.

Speaking during a sensitization meeting held at Sinazongwe Town Council Chamber for Government heads of departments yesterday, Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Community Education Officer Chiko Halwiindi said there was need for concerted efforts from all partners towards fighting corruption because the commission was there to only spearhead the fight.

He said public service workers could actively and effectively participate in the fight against corruption in the public service by strictly adhering to the code of conduct and ethics stipulated in the conditions of service for them.

Mr. Halwiindi challenged the public service workers to embrace the national slogan of ,”A corruption free Zambia begins with me”,  for them to desist from being perpetrators of corruption.

He said the slogan was officially launched by Government and a directive was given to have it mainstreamed into various line ministries and ensure that it is displayed as a reminder.

Mr. Halwiindi said that a free corrupt public service would help ensure that public services are delivered effectively in an impartial, integrity, transparent, and accountable manner that could ultimately result into social economic development of the Country.

He urged them to be  reporting acts of corruption to the ACC within 24hours of noticing and provide continuous assessment of themselves and systems to deal with all the loop holes that could have been used by the perpetrators of the vice in the service.

Mr. Halwiindi emphasized on the need for public service workers to remain mindful of certain if not all practices that leads to corruption in their line of duty.

He said the focus when fighting corruption must be on the indicators, causes, effects, and areas prone to corrupt practices and activities.

Mr Halwiindi also highlighted some of the effects of corruption such as the widened gap between the rich and the poor who are the most hit which results into uneven distribution of national wealth among the citizens in the country.

He said corruption further comprises the national security and stability especially whenever law enforcers turns out to be perpetrators of the vice.

Mr Halwiindi added that corruption also frastrates national development,i ncreases crime levels and negatively affects investor’s confidence.

He said that some of the i ndicators of corruption included luvish lifestyle, social and personal problems such as heavy indebtedness that may result into abuse of public office, refusal to be transferred to other assigned locations and disappearance of important documents.

Incarcerated UPND President Hakainde Hichilema and his treason co accused were suddenly brought back to Lusaka last night.

HH has a case of contempt against Religious Affairs Minister Godfridah Sumaili.

It will be the first time that HH and his co accused will appear in public since the controversial transfer to Mukobeko Maximum prison two weeks ago.
