More competition for Mweene at Sundowns

Kennedy Mweene is staying on at Mamelodi Sundowns but has received more competition for the number one shirt with the 10-time South African champions.

The Zambian number one has been with the CAF Champions League titleholders since June,2013 when he initially joined them on a three-year deal after six seasons at Free State Stars.

But Mweene has over the last two seasons struggled to hold down a spot in the starting XI that he has lost Uganda goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

And now, Mweene has added competition with the arrival of another high-profile African number one following the arrival of Ghana first choice Razak Brimah.

Brimah replaces South African Wayne Sandilands who was not offered a contract extension and has since left Pretoria and moved down the road to Johannesburg and joined Orlando Pirates.

“I have been number one for the Black Stars for four to five years now. You know the Black Stars, we are the best in Africa, and so it’s not easy to be number one in the national team,” Brimah told Kickoff.com.

“Here [at Sundowns] all the goalkeepers are in their national teams, so that’s good for the club and it’s good for the goalkeepers because there will be a lot of challenges. I am here so that I can play so that I can still be number one in the national side.”

  1. Its time to find a new club where you can get some games and comfortbly retire from honorably. You had your time at sundowns.

    • Tito: I agree, Mweene should swallow his pride and find another club that will ensure match time. He is wasting time or maybe we should just stop thinking for him he knows best since he is the one getting paid

  2. If Mweene is interested in being national team keeper and if Zambian selectors are serious he should look for another team that allows him to play. The England keeper did just that

  3. He is in the last couple of years of his playing career. Let him rake in the pension money. If rumor is anything to ride on he earns just below R300,000 per month and that’s before other allowances like training allowance etc. No other club will pay him that amount of money not even overseas.
And the way things are going there is still no competition for him in the national team so he will still be number one for some time. So he is earning big money, he is still 1st choice for the national team…..why move for just game time when your career is closing out??
