Government is ready to process applications for dual citizenship-Kampyongo

Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo
Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo
MINISTER of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo says Government is ready to process applications for dual citizenship in line with the provisions of the amended Constitution.

Mr Kapyongo said at a press briefing yesterday that citizens who wish to acquire dual citizenship must notify the chief passport and citizenship officer or the nearest Zambian mission after successfully acquiring the other citizenship.

Mr Kampyongo said it is imperative for all citizens to thoroughly read the guidelines and understand the requirements of the acquisition of dual citizenship.

“Now that the regulations are in place, citizens of Zambia who wish to acquire citizenship of another country must notify the chief passport and citizenship officer or the nearest Zambian mission after successfully acquiring the other citizenship.

“Those who would like more information should consult the office of the chief passport and citizenship officer on all procedural matters relating to dual citizenship,” Mr Kampyongo said.

He said persons who ceased to be Zambian citizens as a result of acquiring citizenship of another country but wish to restore their Zambian nationality will have to apply to the citizenship board for bestowal.

“Persons whose citizenship has been bestored will be required to present a certificate of bestowal of citizenship to the national registration section of the Department of National Registration, Passport and Citizenship for issuance of a green national registration card.

Meanwhile, Mr Kampyongo said methods of acquiring Zambian citizenship are provided for under Article 34 of the republican Constitution and that it shall be by birth, desent, registration and by adoption.

President Lungu on January 5, 2016, assented to the Constitution amendment Act, which among other things, provides for dual citizenship.

  1. I can bet my life that the majority of applications will come from refugees and West Africans. Genuine zambians living abroad in developed nations have nothing to gain and nothing pulling them back to the poverty in Zambia. Yes ease of travel but I know many who still use their expired passports when they land in Zambia. So until pf accepts that they have failed you can continue lying to yourself. You will just open zambia to criminals.

    • Minister Kampyongo said, “persons who ceased to be Zambian citizens as a result of acquiring citizenship of another country but wish to restore their Zambian nationality will have to apply to the citizenship board for bestowal” end quote.

Thank you now our children have the choice of acquiring Zambian citizenship. But hope the administration understands that Zambians in countries that allow dual citizenship publicly or silently case of North Americas are not required to cease their citizenship to acquire citizenship of their new affinity. Example is Zambians who have picked up US citizenship never renounce their Zambian citizenship. Therefore, they have nothing to restore in this case because they never forfeited their Zambian nationality unlike countries where forfeiture is…

    • @1 NEZ, YOU HAVE IT ALL WRONG ON THIS ONE!! The application process for NATURALIZATION TO BECOME A ZAMBIAN REMAINS THE SAME! If a West African comes and even if he/she marries a Zambian, they he shall have to wait for a stipulated period ( I think 10 years for men, a bit less for women) before they can be considered for Zambian citizenship!! The application for naturalization can even be refused, IF YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH, YOU MAY RECALL HOW MAJID TICKLAY CRIED FOR NATURALIZATION A ZAMBIAN CITIZEN!!

  2. Millions of Indians will now be dual citizens…..people are currently distracted by the presence of Chinese who in my opinion are teaching Zambians real work ethics….the real silent parasites are the indians…..beware of them……in their racism they only bring other Indians to work with them with all profits externalised…

  3. Dipack Patel always had Canadian citizenship while being a Minister in Zambia. Did he lose his zambian citizenship? Can he now reaply for his zambian citizenship?

  4. Did the government do a pilot project to see if this system will be abused by foreigners? Very few Zambians in diaspora are interested in this. There’ll be many more women arrested with drugs at airports claiming to be Zambians.

There’s a reason SATA didn’t want to do this. RB just wanted to do it for the sake of his children who were on the run for corruption. It’s actually a detriment to the Government.
