Low literacy levels in schools due to the poor reading and writing culture-Education Minister

Minister of General Dennis Wanchinga
Minister of General Dennis Wanchinga
Minister of General Education Dennis Wanchinga has attributed the low literacy levels in schools to the poor reading and writing culture in the schools and the country at large.

Speaking during the National Reflection workshop on improving early grade reading held at Intercontinental hotel yesterday, Dr. Wanchinga observed that students who never went to pre-school are likely to repeat and eventually drop out of school.

Dr. Wanchinga states that the poor outcomes in the education fraternity can be linked to the background of a learner whose parents are not learned as such unable to monitor the child’s performance in school.

Dr. Wanchinga has since urged both parents and teachers schools as well as lectures in higher leaning institutions to collaborate for the benefit of learners in schools.

“The low literacy levels in schools is because of the poor reading and writing culture in the schools and the country at large” Wanchinga said

Speaking at the same event, Creative Associates International country representative Tassew Zewdie said learning from the past experiences to enforce future plans and actions is vital to the teaching fraternity to help come up with ways to better the education system in Zambia.

  1. Please, Minister, why not tell us something we didn’t already know ??!! One just has to look at the standard of written English in our daily newspapers to see the lack of a reading and writing culture in the country at large.

    • What do you expect from pf, when they have indoctrinated 2 year olds to recite the dununa song instead of school books.

  2. That mediocre reading/writing culture is very often reflected right here on poorly worded LT headlines.

  3. open more libraries that will encourage young ones to read more for the benefit of future development…..stakeholders they should come on board to assist not only the GRZ

  4. If it is the culture, then the Minister shold resign because nothing can be done at the Ministry of Education.
On the other hand, if it is about neoliberal under funding of education, waiting for ‘market based solutions’ to show up, then it education and taxation policies that are to blame.

  5. The Reading Culture needs to be improved. The improvement will only be achieved through concerted efforts by key players. The key players include Associations and Trade Unions in teaching and learning sector, publishers, government departments.

  6. PF Foo-ls have failed to invest in education then they are blaming the people. Failures always find somebody to blame. For example Trump the I-diot, fails a basic test of empathy, then he starts to blame Obama and Bush.

    • Including Trump and Obama and Bush is not necessary here. The problem identified is poor reading culture. Perhaps low investment in Education Sector is one of the key variables here. Then which sector took the bulk of the public expenditure? A budget pie-chart is need But certainly T-O-B is far fetched. In my view, the investment level taken in isolation can not resolve the problem of poor reading culture. There is need for holistic approach, including affordable quality reading materials, parental care, teacher qualification, learner awareness, etc.

  7. Obama & Bush was just an example of an instance when Trump failed to responsibility. So in the same manner ,PF-Foo-ls are failing to responsibility . I did mention the problem of investment ,you have misunderstood the whole issue. Investments covers all the things you have listed. Investment is not an independent variable . Finally, individuals must take personal responsibility.
