Police apologise to shot student

Share

THE Zambia Police has “unreservedly” apologised to the Copperbelt University (CBU) student who was shot and wounded during protests last week.

Inspector General of Police Francis Kabonde said in a press statement yesterday that the shooting of Cornelius Mwape calls for wholesome condemnation.

“It is with profound regret that (the) Zambia Police further wish to extend apologies to the general public and other interested stakeholders associated with the administration and dispensation of justice,” Mr Kabonde said.

He said the incident could lead to the public’s loss of confidence in the Police Service.

Mr Kabonde called on police officers to uphold professionalism, discipline and integrity.

“All officers should equally observe rules that govern the use of firearms and ensure that sufficient grounds exist to warrant the use of firearms,” he said.
He said the Police Service is committed to upholding human rights.

Mwape was shot while in a group of fellow CBU students who were protesting against the police rescuing a suspected thief the students had caught allegedly stealing a lap top computer at the university.

  1. It is never too late to learn. Police should NEVER BE FEARED BUT RESPECTED—-that is the standard ZP should be aiming for!!!!!!

  2. Police should compensate the victim handsomely and then stop being trigger happy in future. What will be done to the unprofessional police officer?

  3. Good news. However we want to hear also about nguni’s behaviour …what are saying? Do you mean Nguni’s behaviour has not eroded the respect and faith Zambians have in the police service? Please dont be double standard.

  4. Hold up… is the Police officer responsible going to be punished atleast? Shouldn’t that be grounds for reckless endangerment or some such?

  5. Firstly the ZP should not be allowed to bear arms when in operations that involve controlling civil disobedience but only have teargas shields and short-batons by law. This is what we should be advocating for because counting on discipline in the Zambia police force would be fooling ourselves. A good thing they have apologized but that’s not enough nor the end. Criminal JUSTICE must be severed on the perpetrator of this crime against unarmed civilians who must be dismissed from a police force whose salary we pay through our tax, small as it may be. Then ZP needs to FINANCIALLY fully compensate the victim of this crime. Besides, where are the free-lancing layers who could take up this compasation case? All your legal fees would be paid at the end (American style).

  6. Words alone are meaningless for the poor wounded guy. A few millions to go with those words of regret could ease the pain for the guy…

  7. The police should have first the Nation that the culprit will be punished and then talk about the compensation and later an apology.
Those words only have no meaning

  8. The police are apologising because Nyama Soya condemned the incidence. They must compensate the student who was shot. The quality of police service in Zambia is very poor and lack professionalism.

  9. apology is not enough in this case, they wounded him and he might not b able to function as good as he waz b4 being shot

  10. #10 ..you are right, they are apologising coz Nyama Soya condemned the act. It shows how the police is being controlled by the MMD. Its really sad that the police service is no longer a service but a bootlicking service for the master MMD.

  11. Zambia has slide into anarchy. Senseless killings by armed bandits and indisciplined police officers. Destruction of private property by students, in the name of demostration. Party cadres inciting violence. It’s very hard to tell who is in charge.

Inspector General of police is a political stooge who lacks independence. The MMD youth leader has just issued a statement in which he declares that MMD cadres will keep sorting out post reporters in their own way. Sad and shamefull. In any civilised country, police would question him for his remarks. This is Zambia.

  12. this apology is nothing but a way to breing more fights. surely, of all the things a police decides to shot. aren’t you guys trained how to resolve certain siuations without using guns? if not then go back to schoool. guys are to fire on armed robbers and in a war. not on student. look what you have done now, you killed our new and professional accountant or maybe our new intelligent and willing president. useless cop’s from zed. think before you act. by the way, the cop who shot should be shot too as the proverbs says ” whoever kills by gun, dies by gun” hence prepare idoit.

  13. While there is a similar story where I have contributed already, when is GRZ or Zambia Police (Service) going to compensate the injured student?

Has the live bullet use on him been shown to him and his family members now? When is Mr President paying a visit to the injured student?

When is the MMD GRZ through its Zambia Police going to apologise for the shooting of two or so UNZA students that happened last year during late Mwanawasa’s rule who were only assisted by president HH to pay for their hospital bills?

    Have a blessed day all.

Jeremiah 12:5 If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend…

  14. The Police should apologise for missing his head. These CBU thugs during their foolish demos threw a rock at one of my friend’s car on Jambo Drive. His 5 year old daughter who was sitting on the passenger side has only one eye now ! Why apologise ? Punish the cop for missing this educated thug’s head !!

  15. HH ( MBA UK, Privatisation Thief ) was only promoting thuggery and holiganism by visiting his fellow horned friends after being shot by our efficient Police. They too missed the heads. Why ?

  16. #20 Maureen. You are used to seeing dead bodies. There in Nigerian people are killed every day. Don’t comment with castle in your mouth.

  17. It seems the MMD is taking the prevailing peace environment in Zambian for granted. Those stupid MMD leaders should know that It will only takes one spark for everything to go up in flames; The first Lady drawing a salary, 27 Billion still unaccounted for, Media personal being beaten, Thieves being reappointed in government , trigger happy Police officers, the list is endless. I wonder what will make our leaders to resign or be pushed out .

  18. Complete nonsense. Would this chap have apologized if RB had not spoken strongly against it. He is just apologizing to save his job. Every dog has its day..he will meet his comeuppance one day and feel what it is like to be brutalized by authority.
