Chief Nyamphande of the Nsenga people in Petauke district of Eastern Province was at the weekend involved in a road traffic accident that claimed his wife’s life.
The accident happened on Nyamphande road about one and a half kilometers away from the palace. The chief and his deceased wife were returning to the palace from the main business district of Petauke when the accident happened.
The Chief escaped with minor injuries while his wife sustained head injuries and died an hour after the accident.
Chief Nyamphande’s induna for development Michael Daka confirmed the development to ZANIS in an interview at the palace yesterday. He said that the accident happened at about 17:00hrs when the couple was going back home with the deceased driving.
He said the Toyota Cresta registration number AAX 8837 in which they were traveling, went off the road and overturned leaving the Chief in the vehicle while the deceased was thrown out through the windscreen.
Daka said after the accident both the Chief and his wife were rushed to Petauke district hospital where she was pronounced dead and the chief admitted to the intensive care unit. He has since been discharged.
A check by ZANIS at the palace yesterday found mourners gathered.

Sad story. 1.5 Km from home???? Then the vehicle must having been flying. And pipo lets be mindful the rains are here lets check our brakes, tyres. Was is on a tarmac or gravel. Lastly guess she was not in the seat belt. Always remember to buckle up.

I think the govenment did not consider carefully the policy of awarding cars to chiefs. Do the cars come with professional drivers, who inspects and services the cars? A good number of chiefs have been involved in car accidents since the were awarded these cars. Government must provide professional drivers, cars must be serviced by professionals as well and the cars should be brand new. I do not think buying chiefs second hand japanese cars is reasonable when the President and his ministers plus other government offcicials would never use second hand cars for their official duties. None of us really knows what happened in this case and neither is it right for us to assume we know everything…such that we even go to the extent of insulting others. If you have nothing of value to say better keep quiet than be shown to be a fool. So many things could have gone wrong that contributed to this accident. Who tells you this waman wasn’t a skilled driver or even a learned person? I remember when I was back home I sometimes wouldn’t wear my seat belt particularly when traveling a short distance and only now that I am out of Zambia do I wear a seat belt when it is available. Lets learn to speak wisely and not spew like fools.
I just cannot see how she was driving that fast knowing all around the road are houses and if I can remember well that is by the Church yard where all this happened. Unless she was to learn to drive. That is an uphill ride. There is no way one can hit over 45km/h on that stretch. Well everything has its on time.
