Dickson Makwaza: Football is a uniting factor

Former KK 11 captain Dickson Makwaza says football has helped to foster unity and harmony in Zambia.

Zambia is today marking the 54th Independence Anniversary.

Makwaza, who captained Zambia at the 1974 Africa Cup in Egypt, said football and sport in general has been bringing Zambians together.

“As far as I am concerned football and sport has contributed to unite in the country,” the Mufulira Wanderers legend said.

“After Independence in 1964 football, we started getting together as a family in this nation,” Makwaza said.

He is now calling for conceited efforts in growing sport.

“We have to sit down as a nation and chart the way forward on how to improve football. Football is a team sport so we don’ just need to blame coaches when things go bad,” Makwaza said.

Former defender Makwaza, 76, played and coached at Wanderers.

He won five national league titles as a player.

Makwaza made his national team debut in 1965 and captained Zambia to the 1974 AFCON finals.

    • Nevertheless, football was made in KITWE. On Mopani, you are right. It destroyed football in KITWE as well.

    • Iwe Sharon made in Kitwe Kuti? Mufulira was the home of Zambian soccer since the NFL began. Mighty and Blackpool won every thing. Kitwe came on the scene only in the 80s.

  1. Nice to hear tha Dic is still alive and kicking. I enjoyed listening to the radio shaken by 2band mgw. Gone are those hey-days when ZCCM controlled the mines and supported the sport. Saddened that nowadays copperbelt towns are an eye sore 🙁

  2. How about a photo of the legend? Good to hear words of wisdom and intelligence in a country clustered by evil and hate from the royal clan of Namwala and worshipers of a little god.
