President Edgar Lungu has directed newly appointed Ministry of Agriculture permanent secretary Sangowayo Zyambo to break dependence on technocrats but involve key players in the formulation and implementation of agricultural programmes .

President Lungu said heavy reliance on technocrat’s advice without the involvement of stakeholders in the sector has not benefited the agricultural sector.

President Lungu said there is need for the ministry of agriculture to break long held traditions that technocrats know everything and instead engage all stakeholders in the planning and implementation of agricultural programmes.

ZANIS reports that the Head of State said this in Lusaka yesterday when he swore in former Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) Executive Director Sangowayo Zyambo as the new permanent secretary for agriculture.

President Lungu said good performance of the agricultural sector is dependent on consolidated multisectoral efforts and partnerships of stakeholders.

He directed Mr Zyambo not to restrict himself to opinions of technocrats alone but also learn to concerns of farmers and other players in the formulation of policies and implementation of programmes.

The president urged Mr Zyambo to ensure that he interacts and engages key stakeholders in the agriculture sector in order to reposition agriculture as the mainstay of the country’s economy.

The president expressed optimism that Mr Zyambo will use his vast knowledge and experience from his illustrious career in the agricultural industry to resolve challenges in the sector.

And Mr Zyambo pledged to work closely with all key stakeholders as they are affected differently by government policies.

Mr Zyambo said he will work on the foundation of his predecessor to ensure that the E-Voucher achieves its intended purpose and serves the interests of all agricultural stakeholders.

He said he will ensure that the ministry works to promote value addition of agro products to benefit farmers and consumers.
