New road user fees cause havoc

Scores of bus operators and conductors, converged at the main gate of Parliament to protest against the proposed increase in road user fees.

The irate bus drivers and conductors circulated a petition addressed to Transport and Communication Minister, Dora Siliya, urging her not to implement the proposed fees.

They drove to parliament in a convoy of buses, but were denied entry into the National Assembly grounds by police officers at the gate.

And Speaker, AMusa Mwanamwambwa has directed the chairperson of the committee of Supply to seek clarification on the matter.

This followed a point of order raised by Kantanshi Member of Parliament, Yamfwa Mukanga who wanted to know why the proposed increment in road user fees have been effected by RSTA before parliament approved the 2008 budget.

  1. I don’t blame the chaps. Zambia is one of the most expensive places in africa. In some cases prices are comparable to UK prices. Just look at real estate, for a 3 bed hse in lusaka , for the same money you get a mansion with swimming pool in harare or S.africa. The mobile phone charges are in fact more expensive than in the UK. Pleas goverment stop ripping of Zambians.

  2. Mine is not a coment but a question iam currently living outside zambia and would want to come and renewal my driving lincense this month since its expering in may. cant there be a kind of issuing driving lincenses on express with a certain fee different from the ordinary charges. i will really appreciate express services if they can be introduced and iam pretty sure through that they will be able to generate more income since it will be opotional.

  3. This country seems to be on auto pilot most of the time. The government is reactive, understandably so, because it has no vision.Lets wait and see what our parliamentarians will have to say on those fees. They are already a comfortable lot with the additional allowances from NCC…so we may not expect much out of them.It is time for people power.

  4. Pat #1, its all about population.Goods and services provided to a mere 10 million will obviously be more expensive.London has the poulation of Zambia so obviously certain things would be cheaper.real estate in Zambia by comparison is dead cheap.a 3 bedroomed FLAT in london ranges from £250-£350K depending on the area…you do the maths !!!fuel (unleaded) in London is £1.05 and yet the UK is not only closer to the Middle East but has its own oil in the North Sea!! a one way bus ride is £2 !!! the average rates to the council in London are in the region of £1,200pa..again work out the maths !!

  5. Pat #1,England is the size of the Kafue National Park hence land and anything associated with it is horrifically expensive.phones are cheaper in the UK simply becoz with margins of 2%(for example)they still make more money than CELTEL+MTN+Cell Z times 10 !!laptops are given free by simply signing up for broadband at a monthly cost of less than £10!!But try and build a one room extension to your house in London..expect a bill of no less than £15,000 !!! Crazy world don’t you think !!!

  6. to add icing to the cake.. you pay £8 per day to drive in Central London (Congestion Charge) and much more for bigger cars…parking fines start from £60 only if you pay within 14 days otherwise it doubles!!!a loaf of bread dear Pat, figures around £0.89p !!!The bottom line is do a bit of research before you complain…its not always greener in the next field !!
