Zambia make respectable end to unsuccessful 2019 AFCON qualifiers

Zambia on Saturday ensured they ended their unsuccessful 2019 AFCON Group K qualifying race with a dignifying 4-1 home rout of Namibia at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

Chipolopolo still finished bottom of Group K on 7 points, one behind third placed Mozambique who are tied on 8 points with Namibia but the latter beat them to number two on head-to-head following 1-0 home and 2-1 away victories over The Mambas.

Guinea Bissau finished top of Group K on 9 points after drawing 2-2 at home win Mozambique on Saturday in Bissau.

Meanwhile, Augustine Mulenga scored a brace in the 12th and 82nd minutes for Zambia while Donashano Malama and Lazarus Kambole hit the target in 55th and 90th minutes respectively.

Namibia’s consolation came in the 89th minute through Peter Shalulile after he had earlier hit the right angle of the beam in the 77th minute and also had a goal disallowed in the 57th minute.

But Shalulile was not the only Namibian denied by the woodwork after Deon Otto too saw his 27th minute shot come off the post.

Zambia now turns their focus to the Ethiopia 2020 CHAN qualifiers where they enter the race in July after enjoying a bye from April’s first round.

Zambia will face winner between Botswana and Seychelles in the second round qualifiers during the weekend of July 26-28 for the first leg and August 2-4 for the last leg.

The winner advance to the final qualifying round where a prospective date against 2011 CHAN runners-up Angola awaits during the weekend of September 20-22 for the first leg while the final leg decider will be played during the dates of October 18-20.

  1. Only those starved of football would watch such dead rubbers. Let’s change the FAZ leadership fast

    • Some of us watch soccer because we love the game. A good game is a good game regardless. Those of you who watch soccer only when you are winning have no love for the game. You are the kind that doses off at half time.

  2. Zambian coaches can deliver. Foreign coaches kuwayawaya fye. Let us just give them the needed support.

  3. The team played very well but lacked composure on defence. We can however do it if we just boost the morall in the team.

  4. Trib.al Gay Jay, your comment on the dead rubber please?
I say so because your trib.al upnd has been in the same dead rubber since 2006 trib.al convention, and the rubber is getting thicker with trib.al strategies.

Tell you what, I am almost convinced trib.al Gay Jay is the same poster as trib.al Hacks. Prove me wrong by posting your picture Gay Jay, trib.al.

  5. Kudos to Aggrey Chiyangi and Numba Mumamba. The problem of Zambian football has been at team selection level. In the mildest of abundant talent it becomes very difficult to select players who are going to make a winning team and at the same time jell together considering they do not play together in one team. It takes an understanding coach to have the skills of mobilizing players who can form a winning team. Let alone inspire the players to have the confidence to win the game. Some coaches have been playing names and focusing on past experience. Just look at the team which beat Namibia and allow them to play together for some time. My pointy is lets pay particular attention when selecting the team to feature against any other strong team on the continent. Coaches in the premier league…

  6. great game.. loved mulengas goals because the were a team effort. defense still lacking.. if your player is injured in your half kick ball out of play. two far post goals by Namibia the first one should have alerted the coach of a gap in defense
