Scrappy Zambia reach COSAFA Cup semifinals

Zambia continued their COSAFA Cup great escape act at the quarterfinal stage of the tournament for a second successive season after coming from two-down against Malawi to advance to the semifinals on post-match penalties in Durban.

Chipolopolo also toiled to the 2018 semifinals after beating Namibia 4-3 on post- match penalties following a 0-0 draw in Polokwane.

Meanwhile, Malawi squandered a 2-0 lead to let Zambia labour back into the match in dramatic fashion to finish 2-2 and ultimately punish The Flames 4-2 on post-match penalties.

Gabadinho Mhango punished defender Tandi Mwape for some sloppy defending in the 3nd minute in a match Zambia were second best against a convincing Malawi.

Zambia’s defensive frailties again returned to haunted them in the 48th minute when Benson Sakala fouled Mhango in the box and Gerald Phiri stepped up to send debutant goalkeeper Sebastian Mwenge the wrong way.

But Austin Muwowo but cut the deficit in the 58th minute and a minute later was substituted.

Emmanuel Chabula justified his arrival in the 58th minute for Lazarus Kambole with an 88th minute equalizer to send the match to post match penalties.

Zambia then converted all their penalties through Bruce Musakanya, Mwila Phiri, Adrian Chama and Chabula.

But Malawi were undone by Chawanagawa Kaonga who fired high and over and Precious Sambani who hit the post to end Malawi’s dreams of reaching the semifinals.

Zambia now face defending champions Zimbabwe in the semifinals on June 5 in a repeat of the two sides last two final meetings that have both gone the Brave Warriors way.

  1. This is what happens when you have failed leadership that takes politics to sports. Even my Swiss wife Elisa couldn’t believe the result against a mere malawi team. Right now we are just having our dinner after having a shower together in our double shower wink wink . Nakukaba ku england guys.b

    • the scrappy is you who went to Congo, and that dcck fighting Kalusha, instead of supporting cosafa.

  2. We are definitely not going past semis. This is a result of bad leadership at football house. Most teams in the region are improving but we are busy fighting for caf positions. I watched the match we clearly have no team to give us any glory

  3. The Chipolopolo Boys were a real disappointment. I would love them to win the COSAFA only for patriotic purposes, but in reality Malawi outplayed us. On the positive note, there is tremendous improvement of football in the region. There are no small boys in SADC anymore.

  4. After watching that game, I just concluded and said FOOTBALL IN ZAMBIA HAS GONE TO THE DOGS. Honestly why did they even go there? For what? Surprisingly, Kamanga wants to go and represent us at CAF? Really? Laughable indeed. When you have failed you have failed. Kamanga is one such rotten egg in our Zambian football. Enough is enough. You failed to take us to two OFCONs and now that pwi pwi pwi of football at COSAFA level, oooh my God.

    • Kamanga Kamanga is preparing and funding for those games. Any failures..blame the technical bench, players and their coach. They are the ones on the pitch where we NEED GOOD results

  5. Analyse the game and avoid talking about Kamanga
Dull minds discuss pipo while productive minds discuss ideas. Just shake up the team Aggrey.Zambians too much Pull him down. Keep quiet if you have nothing to say.

  6. But what kind of an Editor edited this story full of errors. Lets be serious even editing a small story must still be a big problem?

  7. I think it was a great come back. The goal keeper redeemed himself. Unlike most of you I think we can go far. It was the first game. We will get better. WATCH THIS SPACE

  8. we HAVE FOUND A GREAT REPLACEMENT FOR mweene THIS GOALKEEPER IS THE GREATEST OF ALL HE NEEDS ZAMBIAS SUPPORT CHECK HOW HE SCARED THE MALAWIAN BOY TO KICK HIGH EVEN THE OTHER PENALTY HE USED A SIMILAR TRICK TO SCARE THE PENALTY TAKER WHO HIT THE POST , AH BRAVO KEEP IT UP

  9. Unfortunately it’s not the way you play that earns points, it’s what you score that earns you points. Zambia is doing what’s important. ..score and win.

  10. I think Zim will be a tough opponent
    We need to improve
If you think we are that bad ask Malawi

  11. The system of play was poor.the ball has to be played through the middle from midfield that’s when players like kambole are effective

  12. Lekeni ukulandalanda sometimes teams that start like the way the chipos started end up winning the cup, If I can remember sometimes Brazil or Italy will play sluggishly but end up with a cup in their hands. Goals matter Bane!

    • Typical Zambian with theories. It’s either you don’t know soccer or you are just in denial that your Chipolopolo team is substandard material.

  13. Actually, PF paid the Malawi goal post keeper for that mistake. It was indeed a disappointing game and we are yet to be disppointed by the chipolopolo boys
