Mourners scamper for safety

Share

Pandemonium reigned during the burial service of Kalomo Central Member of Parliament Request Muntanga’s late mother, Noria, at her farm graveyard when a snake crept among the mourners.

Mourners scampered for safety as the serpent caused panic among mourners who included Southern Province minister Daniel Munkombwe, Southern Province Permanent Secretary Darius Hakayobe and chief Hamusonde of Monze.

United Party for National Development (UPND) and MMD district officials were among the panic stricken mourners who had to temporarily abandon the funeral service as some youths tried in vein to kill the snake.

After almost ten minutes of a vigorous hunt for the snake, the serpent eluded the youths by slipping away into nearby shrubs.

Speaking after the commotion, Southern Province Minister Daniel Munkombwe called on the bereaved family and mourners to look to God during such times of bereavement.

Mr. Munkombwe said death is never easy to accept hence the need to seek for divine solace.

Noria Muntanga 73, is survived by a husband, eight children, 37 grand children and 22 great grand children.

  1. Wah dis? Some superstitious reporter, eh? If it was a rabbit, him wud probably never even budge.

  2. This journalism ya pa Monze trades is costing us in electricity for use of computers. This T are Tongas only report on resurrected people, missing people in mortury, a half-calf-human baby. All kind of stupid stories. That funeral was extremely honourable, but all we can learn and remember is this dirty…..
You writer and editor, you need to apologise to the mourning family. And you who wrote this story, I wish you to roast in hell within 2 minutes.

  3. if you do not like the story dont read it and who is forcing you to open lusaka times?Read BBC and let those who want to read such stories continue reading them.

  4. #6, our choice of stories to read is similar to our choice of words. If you don’t like the comments, read the ones on BBC.

  5. All the people at this funeral are annoying superstitious cowards who need to be sprinkled with holy water to exorcise their demons. I’t’s a snake for Pete’s sake! It has the right to slither away to safety when threatened. They are just trying to imply that the old lady has superpowers and turned into a snake.

  6. They say information is power,my thoughts are that all news items are important, actually it does not necessary mean that we have to comment on every item coz some are just for our information.Guess its the case of looking at a bottle that half full, someone else would say,”its half empty. So,it depends were you’re standing!!

But in all, great job LT,keep it up!!!!

  7. There is no need to get tribal about this story. If you do not enjoy it then find something better instead of speaking for others.

The story is interesting as PK Chishala (MHRIP)would put it Ubuloshi bwa ba Pole Pole.

  8. Condolences to the bereaved family of the Muntangas.

It is also gratifying to note that both MMD and UPND officials and supporters came together for a noble cause. Let us continue with this spirit of working together in times of need.

  9. Surely i join #1, with due respect to the bereaved family, is this news LT?????? Unless you are issunuating something, but as it is, give us newsworth items please……

  10. Why were the youths trying to kill the snake? it crept passed them so they should have let it go. why waste 10 minutes chasing for a snake when it is not even attacking you. For crying out loud it was in the wild and you were trespassing. Leave it be. In all honesty i find this story irrelevant and lacks connection with sensible journalism. may be it is best for a tabloid than on a progressive online like tthis one

  11. The forest is the habitation for wide animals. There is nothing sinister about the snake and there is nothing wrong to bring such stories on the web.pliz people let us not throw words at each other. God bless

  12. Thanks LT. People are hard to impress. Why complain about the news item? The news in the story is that one of the members of parliament lost his mother. Its also news to hear that, the body has been burried. Its news to me to learn that ata time of burrial, the snake disrupted the event temporarily.Tnats news indeed bloggers, some of whom are in the diaspora.
Keep it up LT. I appreciate all news items that you display and if i dent open this web page, i feel llike i have missed something big.

    Yours sincerely,
    A home-sick blogger!

  13. Am there were flies at that funeral, aren’t you reporting about that? Trash this story! Are you trying to implore some superstition myth in your readers? Can someone tell me what they’ve lent from the fact that a snake crept up from the bush. LT Editor, snakes live in the bush unless you term them.

  14. #19,i didnt see your name.No wonder your are angry. They reported about your mashina.Show them the venom Njooka!

  15. All of you who think the appearance of a snake at the burrial site is unusual are cowards. Ba Mbuli imwee !

  16. There is a thin line between this story and the maid who went to the USA carried by the LT about two weeks ago. Allow light moments to prevail. All work and no jokes makes……. It’s a gag.

  17. Indoshi ni ndoshi. My Father-in-law is a great witch. Brethrens, we only survive by prayer. Remember us in your prayers guys.
    Thanks to LT.

Watch out or else, i will poison all the fish & we shall see what you will be eating.

  19. Strange but snakes habitate in the bush and it was only disturbed by the mourners. to the mourners, there was nothing so mysterious about the snake unless you know your behavouir of turning into other creatures thats when you would mind. This reminds me of a story i was once told by one man who comes from that province about a man who used to change into a wild pig(sumtwe) and eat goats and chiken in the neigbourhood. one day they protested and plotted to kill it and as they were about to shoot, it changed and it was someone influencail in that village. He was sahmefull and askedv for forginess but he was to pay for the damege caused.

  20. #28 fuseki zwaa awa wabanzi webo, you will see your grandmother will refuse to be buried (I am thinking #28 is my traditional kazeni and has a right to call me anything)

  21. #31 I am told Luapula (mununga) is the HQ for witchcraft, forget about these baby tonga witches, they are nothing compared to what we hear from Kwa Mununga! One Police officer (late) witnessed an incident in Luapula which he lived to tell, so what are you talking about

  22. Yes the snake had every right to attack the mourners. Why trespass? Hey u can only kill it if it comes in to your yard but remember you house is built on its home ground….. try in build in the air. we all have rights…human rights, snake rights….etc thats why they are to be protected….

  23. #36 sure ka, but pa zed is it not Mununga. Nsama the man says there was this theif who was notorious stealing chickens, household items etc, so abalumendo said no let us teach the money a lesson and guess what. one evening as the sun was setting the whole Mansa my friend saw a fire ball, start off from the shanty compound, made a few rounds in the air and then went and settled on the hut that was accupied by the theif and engulfed the hut together with him inside, now if that is anything to be compared with a little snake then I dnt know what

All the “old MEN AND WOMEN” are regarded as wiTches traditionally. Thats why I try as much as possible to remain young.

  25. FWE MA ZAMBIAN TWALITEMWA UKU CONCLUDER.WE ALL KNOW A SNAKE AND MAN ARE NATURAL ENEMIES AND AS SUCH WHEN THE TWO COME ACROSS EACH OTHER ONE OF THE TWO MUST SCAMPER FOR SAFETY.IN THIS CASE THE SNAKE WAS OUT NUMBERED AND SO IT HAD TO FLEE.AFTER ALL THAT SNAKE KNOWS THE FOREST BETTER SINCE THAT IS ITS HABITAT.IT’S GOOD THE BURIAL PROCESS RESUMED SUCCESSFULLY AFTER THAT CONFUSION.MAY THE SOUL OF THE DECEASED REST IN ETERNAL, PERFECT PEACE.

  26. Stop this ill talk about Tongas! Some of you should stop reading between the lines. LT simply reported a story…There was a funeral, a snake came, The people were scared (because snakes are known to kill), the people tried to kill the snake before it killed them, the snake went away, the funeral carried on. END OF STORY.
    P.S. Tongas are the best.

  27. It was just a snake in the wilderness. However, may the old Lady Rest in Peace, my would be wife is Tonga. should i be worried?

  28. Interesting news on this web,i never knew what exciting it is.The story despite old, did not make any sense.Guys let report real NEWS.Did the snake bite anyone? so what!

  29. Chaps stop tribalising this issue.Zambia and zambians are above this type of tyhinking. The journalist may have been from anywhere in the country. There is nothing that stops any zambian living anywhere in the country.I do understand the story is povery stricken in terms of substance and hence that is what we need to attack not tribes, languages, areas etc.
