The opposition United National Independence Party (UNIP) in Lusaka district has challenged a faction, allegedly led by its former Secretary General (SG) Malimba Masheke, to come out in open and form a political party other than causing confusion.
And UNIP in Lusaka has charged that General Masheke was expelled from the party and he was now a Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) member.
Lusaka District Chairman UNIP, Moses Phiri, said the party was aware that Gen. Masheke was sponsoring his allies to destabilise the executive, party structures and the entire leadership of the former ruling party.
Mr. Phiri has since asked Gen. Masheke to desist from his plans to destabilise UNIP but instead who instead should concentrate on offering solutions to the FDD.
He said this in a press statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today.
He has appealed to the youths and the entire UNIP membership to be vigilant and not allowing sponsored people to cause confusion in the oldest political party in the country.
He said UNIP president, Tilyenji Kaunda and the Central Committee members would go to the National Congress when the party deemed fit to do so.
Mr. Phiri stressed that the party would not allow any outsider to make decisions on how it should operate.
“As UNIP, I wish to state that Gen Masheke has nothing to offer. We are aware of Gen. Masheke and his sponsored aliens who are trying to destabilise our party,” Mr. Phiri said.
Gen. Masheke, who is former Prime Minister in the UNIP government and party Secretary General, is quoted in today’s newspapers as having alleged that UNIP president, Tilyenji Kaunda, was leading the party illegally.
According to Gen. Masheke, his group has launched the national revival forum to oust Mr. Kaunda and usher in new leaders that would contribute to the promotion of multi-party politics in Zambia.

After that correction may we now say a thing or too. UNIP have not attended to the weaknesses in their structures for a long time so this was bound to happen. However, we must also acknowledge that Tilyenji is not a politician by nature as was his late brother Wezi who would have done a better job and given the MMD a good run had it not been for an untimely death. We need UNIP to be revived because apart from the UPND, it is the only party in this country which has a proper ideology.
I though dinosaurs had were long extinct, ney to return. UNIP is one such dinosaur species that is no longer threated but has already crossed the threshhold into extinction such that their internal squabbles are no longer newsworthy. So let’s talk about something else of national interest; the incumbent’s worrying health for instance.
Just because the MMD is in power doesn’t mean that anyone needs to put down UNIP.
The country has nothing but neoliberal parties – MMD, UPND, PF even, their prescriptions for the economy are all the same. Foreign Direct Investment, IMF prescriptions for privatisation, and basically the creation and maintenance of a small economic and political elite.
In a functioning democracy, the people deserve much more. If UNIP updated it’s economic policy to create a massive middle class (wide spread land and home ownership, universal education and healthcare, supporting Zambian small businesses), the country would develop in a way that would not leave 70% of the population on the sidelines.
What has UNIP got to show for today ,…realy nothing…. UNIP has lost a great deal of ground true, could it be extinct mybe , but can it be revived. We wait and see.
Look at Macain he never gave up the fight , and now he my just be the next President of the USA .Let T J kaunda step aside and let others who know the game play ball.
” What has UNIP got to show for today ,…realy nothing…. ”
Really everything. They built Indeni. What has the MMD built? One more Indeni, in the 17 years they have been in power – no.
The problem with the neoliberal mindset is that they think the market will build infrastructure. It is the government that builds infrastructure, and it is time that a new nationalist government came to power.
