Long queues form as voter registration ends

Long queues have formed at designated voter registration centres in Lusaka as the extended continuous mobile voter registration exercise comes to an end today.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) announced the resumption of the continuous mobile voter registration exercise which commenced on 10th March and comes to an end today 31st March,2011, following the initial exercise which ended in November last year.

A check by QFM at some the designated registration centres found long queues of people trying to get their voters cards before the close of the exercise later today.

At Vera Chiluba Basic school in Helen Kaunda a long queue of enthusiastic people formed as they waited for their turns to get voters cards.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia has stated that there will be no extension to the period for the issuance of voters cards once it comes to an end.

Vice president recently told parliament that the number of registered voters had by December 2010 increased to more than four million.

  1. So, they were all ‘gun pointing’? Sounds like a case of ‘too little too late’, it ‘s Rupaih Again…..

  2. And I registered in july 2010 without a fuss. RB is already assured of massive yes vote

  3. LUSAKA IS OUR STRONGHOLD NO MATTER WHAT RUPIAH AND WILLIAM BANDA DO. INFACT WILLIAM BANDA’S VIOLENCE AND TAKING OVER OF MARKETS IS JUST DECOMPAIGNING RUPIAH BECAUSE PEOPLE DONT LIKE THAT.
THANKS FOR REGISTERING AS VOTERS ZAMBIANS.WE HAVE TO CHANGE GOVT THIS YEAR.
VOTE SATA AND PF COME 2011.

  4. Fellow Diaspora bloggers lets petition the government to recognise our inalienable right to vote. We cant lose our voting right just because we are abroad. It is our right. Its not supposed to be handed to us by Rupiah Banda or whoever is President. Remember what Mandela said; our rights wont fall from heaven. We have to fight for them. At present we cant vote because those who are ruling say they have no confidence in a voting system for us abroad. But that cant be the reason to deny us our right to vote. The fact is there are systems to enable us to vote which a lot of countries are using to enable their citizens to vote. The US, UK South Africa etc have allowed their citizens from abroad to vote in this way. These votes have not been doubted.

  5. Why should we allow our rulers to get away with the argument that they dont have mechanisms to allow us to vote. This is an archaic argument and has no facts to stand on. There has been noone to prove that votes from abroad can be manipulated. Professor Chirwa, please help us since you are abroad and are an academic. We must vote We must Vote It is our right. It is not a priviledge that should be handed to us by any politician

  6. The fact that our ruling party or president dont trust voting mechanisms to enable people abroad to vote does not mean this is true. It is merely an opinion. The fact that we are being denied our right to vote does not need proof. There is in Zambian law simply no provision for us abroad to vote. But we should not accept this as normal. There are about 1 million of us abroad. That denies our electorate a critical figure during election time. We just cant be ignored. Certainly not because someone wants to ignore us.
