Government has set aside K 83 billion in this year’s National budget to pay off teacher’s outstanding salary arrears.

And the Ministry of Education has announced that it will write a proposal to cabinet on possible recapitalization of the Zambia Education Publishing House (ZEPH).

Education Minister Dora Siliya disclosed that out of the K83 billion set aside, government has already released K10 billion towards the payment of teachers’ salary arrears.

Ms Siliya said government attaches great importance to the welfare of teachers in the country hence government’s commitment in addressing their plight.

The Minister said this during the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC’S) Culture remodeling programme last night.

And Ms. Siliya said government was losing huge sums of money printing examination papers abroad.

She said there is need for government to find a lasting solution to the problems affecting ZEPH if the institution is to serve the country to its best ability.

The minister observed that ZEPH was still a viable institution in the education sector adding that her ministry was in a process of writing a proposal to cabinet for possible recapitalization of the institution.

Meanwhile Ms. Siliya disclosed that for every new school government will construct it will also be constructing 20 houses for teachers.

She said this is in a bid to address the accommodation problems that most teachers go through at government schools especially in rural areas.

Ms. Siliya said this will also act as a motivating factor for teachers intending to apply for jobs in rural areas.

The minister further said government is among other things, currently addressing the conditions of service for teachers working in rural areas such as the timely payment of rural hardship allowances.

  1. The magic that an election year can bring with it! Suddenly K83Billion is available to pay teachers what they have been owed for years.. wow!

Teachers are not stu.pid, they will still not vote MMD despite being paid, that is if at all the money is actually available.

  2. Thandiwe Banda is still on the books too. She is still being paid as a teacher and I bet she will collect on this money.

  3. This minister Siliya gives the word ‘dull’ a whole new meaning. To characterise your late payment of salaries to your workers as ‘their plight’ and that you are stepping in to help them by giving them what is already theirs as if its an act of a good Samaritan is being extremely daft and insulting to teachers. What puzzles me is, if the Government sets this kind of example, how do we expect the so called investors to respect Zambian workers. Mr. President, the buck stops at your desk.

  4. Government attaches great importance to the welfare of teachers in the country. Dora who are you kidding my sister. Just come out in the open and say you are soliciting for votes. This is an election year we all know. But this time we are going to vote wisely though i know people in petauke will still vote for you and Peter Daka. Kabili easterners thats how they are. Very conservative people. It took them over 10 years to accept that Kaunda was no longer the president of Zambia.

  5. Zed has gone to the dogs , courtesy of chiluba . It’s not functioning very well at all ! Very low standard of governance.

  6. Salary arrears 83 billion kwacha (for hundred thousand teachers)….Failed constitution 134 billion kwacha ( for a hand full people)…Lol… Ati iyo we are woking!

  7. And they keep praising Kanitundila, mayor of Lusaka for the work he is doing. Well, he gets paid for getting us into further debt. Mailo, no earth quake in Kabwe ai? Side pa Mulungushi University, naka Tsunami from Lukanga Swamps?

  8. #6 operation: Owl

    very good observation!

natu tamfye ba kapoli ba MMD bashupa ichalo pafula

  9. Dora, look at her, so disgusting as if its feeds on ifisashi at every meal. Where does Dora take the money meant for Teachers’ salaries? Atleast ka Chiluba and abena Katele used to dress up from stolen money, not aya ama hyenas ya mu MMD… except ka Namugala. And I wonder what is still doing in MMD.

  10. so these arrears must have accumulated over years right ?even before rb came on the scene and though he has gotten round to righting a wrong created by his predecessors he will be crucified. uummmh….. so its like the sins of the parent pass on to the child

  11. #12 its still the same party in power! i dont care who is at the helm of it, its still MMD. So to help you understand, the MMD government has failed us, period! so we need change. You can change your presidential candidate for all i care, it will still be the same party that the Zambian people want to remove from power. Hope that answers your ‘question’

  12. what a compaign tool. i don’t think teachers can be played on their minds easly and cheeply like this. infact. This money belongs to them, it is theirs and they have already worked for it. meaning there is nothing new in the whole equations. The govt is simply paying what they have been owing teachers for some years.

  13. Why have the teachers not been paid all this time? This is criminal and only leads to cheating during exams as teachers want some money to survive. This government is truly a rubbish collection of human waste.

  14. Typical UNIP tactics. Thinking tarring a road before an election will sway voters’ choice?? Good luck. Think that remedying injuries to hapless teachers and pensioners will sway voters’ choice??? Good luck. Politicians are forgetting that the population has come of age. Teachers get what is rightfully yours, BUT vote wisely.

  15. Ba dora mulaibepa. What do you mean your govt care for teachers plight? is it because of elections?! Shame on you!! why did you let these arreas accrue instead of clearing them as they came? you irritate us, but dont worry, you and your 12345 will pay for your sins after this year”s elections.

  16. YES, PAY US OUR MONEY, WE WORKED FOR IT…….DORA IWE, DON’T SOUND AS IF YOU ARE DOING US A FAVOUR…….. BUT IN CASE YOU HAVE SOME FUNNY IDEAS, FORGET ABOUT OUR VOTES, THEY ARE FOR SATA……

  17. Sad Dora is given so much power and she has no idea what to do with it. We are with you all great teachers, this is not fair for you to be treated by this dull chap like this. Pls all teacher, teach this MMD a lesson this year, do decampaign them through your pupils. We are counting on you too.
