President Rupiah Banda held talks with International Judo Federation (IJF) President Marius Viser and discussed a number of issues concerning the development of sports and, in particular, the construction of an ultra-modern judo centre in Zambia.
Viser told President Banda in Instanbul, Turkey, that his federation has agreed to set up a multi-million judo centre in Zambia, the first of its kind in Africa, ahead of the 2012 Commonwealth Games in London.
The IJF boss said the centre will be used to train judokas from African countries.
The construction of the centre is scheduled to begin in a few months’ time once suitable land is identified in the Zambian capital, Lusaka.
President Banda thanked the IJF for considering Zambia as the first African country to have the centre. He assured Viser that Zambia will look after the facility very well once constructed.
The meeting was also attended by IJF goodwill ambassador Nicholas Buzaiunu.
Judo is one of Zambia’s reliable sports disciplines in terms of winning medals at international sports events.
President Banda is an ardent follower of sport and has for many years also been involved in sports management in various disciplines.
This is contained in a a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations , Dickson Jere.
ZANIS
good move Sir.
BUT CAN’T WE PUSH FOR UNIVERSITIES ALSO, OR A NEW AIRPORT?
OR SOME NEW ICONIC STRUCTURES OTHER THAN FINDECO
ANYWAY IT IS GOOD AT TIMES TO BE GRATEFUL AND SHOW GRATITUDE WHERE ITS DUE…
SIR YOU ARE WORKING HARD!!
MAY GOD BLESS YOU
RB makes a foreign trip, he attarcts capital investments and addressed international dignitories. Sata makes a foreign trip, he addresses 15 sophomeres and turns to dinning with gays, pledges a pro gay environment in Zambia.
Judo center? Are you serious? You mean you flew all the way to Turkey using tax payers money to discuss the building of a judo center! But kwena this is comedy. Look at the roadsand sanitation  in the compounds … These among other issues  which you should be discussing not judo atase …Uno umwaka uleya kapala. Go and construct that judo center at your “Ziba Zako” Farm. SITYOPETI!!!
Walifilwa ukukula na ka cambin kakulalamo mafi yobe muletashya instead of drinking beer you will be going to the same place chimbwi ewe
Just build a better PRISON so that we can be visiting you and your crew next yr.
Stupid ***** ukutotonkanyafe amafi who woud like to go ku prison waba ilyobe PF kaponya
Sata will spend 5 yrs arresting white collar criminals . We need an ultra-modern PRISON not judo
That kaponya will never be the leader of zambia is useless just like you will send him to South Africa again infact will use mobil hospital to take him to airport
Judo Judo Judo pleease mwebantu, he even has time to meet funny delegations to discuss useless sport. This guy never cease to amaze me, sometimes Ba RB muleibwelamo mwaishiba te? Please as President Ba RB don’t agree to meet every Jim and Jack just because they promise to build this or that. The best would have been to give Mr Viser Hon Chipungu’s business card and move on to more serious issues.
Judo center? and this was reported, surely LT this is an insult! elo iwe chi Patriot we mbwa yabula umuchila what are you saying, wait till sata is sworn in, mukalila ba kabwa. so RB wants to practice defence mechanisms for his prison tenure ka, atalika ku sondoka
misplaced priorities!
Every country which has ever developed has a healthy sports culture…..
Development is not only roads, building etc… its also the mind and the body
There is what is called prioritisation!!! We can look at sports when we have a good agricultural marketing system, good transport system and a very well balanced democratici society.
Ata!!! this is not gud news to me either, just imagin within the few days he visited everythng has been discussed without consultation? RB ure a foolish, u want to come & start beating who ever disagrees with you? Push for rehabilitating our roads, like dual carrage way, universities, though I like sport very much but not judo. Viva pa Bwato, Viva Pf
Chi RB travel around zed by road for once then you will realise that its roads we need not kunfu centres
Country men and women, the first report (whether it is or not) of RB in Turkey turns out to be a discussion on judo!!! There are so many needy areas that a president worth his salt could actually table with his counterpart. It shows you his priorities, completely upside down! Ati ba president!
Was this the epitome of the Turkey trip? A Judo centre? I think the cost of the presidential trip was more that it will cost to put up the said multi-million dollar (or is it kwacha) Judo centre. We definitly have more priority infrastructure investments required than this.
As for #3 Patriot, what does it say of your logic to compare Sata’s trip to that of RB? One was a state visit by the President of Zambia and the other by an opposition leader with a very specific mission as per invitation. It says alot that about the esteem you hold Sata in for you to compare the two in the first place
lets not blame RB, maybe thats all that Turkey has to offer. to me thats just another wasted trip, I thinks its among the few countries RB is yet to visit before he’s booted out
Awe sure ma Zambians negativity ya chilamo.
I’m begining to think it doesn’t matter who will be president, Zambian’s are just a rotten, spoilt, ungrateful lot.
It doesn’t matter how much work one puts in. It’ll never be appreciated until he’s dead! COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS FRIENDS AND INDEED GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE!
Kunfu Banda!! . . . . .ulichiwelewele.
Patriotic, RB never attracted any foreign investment, this decision was made by the organization itself and whether RB went there or not the decision had already been made.Infact he was just being informed, he did not lobby it. Even the picture shows that RB is surprised. Now tell me, is the construction of this facility a strategic prioity in our sixth national development plan? Mankumanya fye, nothing to talk about. The guy who was delivering this message just took advantage of the presence of a president of a country already earmarked
A big shame indeed.
We need serious investment that will create real jobs and alliviate poverty. By the way how many people are ardent supporters of judo other than afew cops and other service men from ZNS, ZAF and army. RB should have pushed for Turkey setting up a plant that makes steel towers and the likes even for a privately owned University. Its sad though its said beggers should not be choosers.
Am sure this will work very well to train MMD cadrez in full contact karate with Honourable MP Guston Sichilima az Shotokan Master and William Banda az patron.
What do you need for a judo centre? A few mats! What a joke
Sport is a good thing. Our youth are being destroyed by alcohol and other vices. Judo teaches discipline and the health improves. Looking forward to the completion of this project.
And by the way, whenever such conferences are held, there are several smaller round table meetings which also take place simultaneously. Some thematic areas of interest include climate change and other environmental issues. I’m also sure the LDCs will compare notes regarding their development processes, possible areas of cooperation, dealing with cooperating partners and so on. The list is endless.
Friends, Zambia is not an island. It is part of the global village and just as members of any community must participate in community activities, Zambia should also be active. It is unfortunate if you’re unable to see the trading opportunites and other business that could arise from such interaction.
One Zambia, One Nation!
ooh my hard earned money is been misused.how can a president travel all the way that far only to discuss judo? wat a wasted resources.if only i had a choice these guys would not ve seen my taxes.judo is the least that we need at the moment.there is so much that a president should and ask for not judo.well am disapointed
Kulyata Muleya you are very stupid fool!Development is development whether from the private sector or from the government. As for the picture,it was not taken at the time when RB was briefed about the construction, rather before he left for Turkey at Lusaka Airport.Only fools can talk & think like you!
but eeh!!!!!! this is non-sense indeed o the way to turkey only to kam back with judo..thats wat happens if sam one never traveled abroad b4 but only to be given a chance to do that
If RB goes to far away countries to negotiate for sports facilities, why does he have the Sports Minister and deputy?
Hegimony kind of governance.
RB is in Turkey on UN discusions & not to discuss Judo issues.RB president for all Zambians.
An ultra modern fimo fimo is good, but look at our environment…look at how we live. It is as if we are recovering from war. Mud, dust and degradation everywhere. We have a long way to go.
Judo offices!!!!! This is a joke. Roads are in bad shape and you say build a judo complex???? May God deliver us.
@27, spare my ribs, they are cracking.
People, it is rather depressing to read some of your comments. You are not suggesting that countries develop in a serial manner – build all the roads before sports facilities. Judo/sports is as much an important facet of development alongside roads and all. Give RB a break. He is at least doing something while all we seem to do is rubbish him and any the providers of the little hope there is. Grow up.
sorry meant @21.reminds of a picture i saw of gaston poised for a northern side kick though he looked frail and beaten
Development is a multi-dimensional concept, its not abt alleviating poverty, constructing of roads, having jobs but it involves a lot of things-health,education,gud infrastructure etc..so its a welcome move to hv a Judo centere coz i understand the centre ll b the first in African wch means SA,botswana, zim, angola n other african countries ll b coming to zambia n in the long run we ll attract foreign nationals wh ll be spending on accomodation, food n services on our economy..let me also remind u that donor funds r given under conditionality,so RB cant tell turkey to say that u shud use th money for constructing the roads than building Judo centre otherwise turkey ll refuse..its a yes bwana when u r with a donor country,,,lets continue developg zed ourslves thn depend on gvt.

Msana wa Nzili you are a cripple. Zambia can’t even hold international games because we lack facillities. And you are against the president atracting such at minimal or no cost? Just keep to Sata your fagort.
Please learn to take good pictures of the President!
Yes Simeza, we need a new airport or airports. How about a new Copperbelt Airport to serve CB instead of the crappy Ndola Airport? Also, “redistribute” development instead of Lusaka only!
workers on strike in itezhi-tezhi over rural hardship allowances
Rome was not built in 1 day…remember thatSome things might appear to be hopeless to some of you but a little goes a long way lets put things into context here.If that centre was of high standard even compared to Other African countries you would 1. benefit by having sports people across the continet wanting to use the facility2. If up to international standars you could stand a chance to host international tounaments which brings in forex3. instead of peopls always going for drinks after work maybe they would find some other activityetcThe benefits are many with one comes other with and importand structure do not always expect investment that will creat thousands of jobs every time.Even 100 jobs created is a step in the right direction but because you want to all of a sudden to b
Congestion of traffic in Lusaka has continued to grow each & every day.May govt please construct more roads and repair the existing ones before the rains start.Soon next month we will be in the middle of the year..and if the roads are not worked on attention will be switched to elections campaigns.Ba LT please in yr weekend pictures can you include these long queues of
traffic being experienced in Lusaka for all to see specially those in leadership. Â
Development is not only what you want and seriously people on this forum need to grow up and argue issiues not always just being negative for the sake of it
Im no fan of RB but please spare him. Read and understand the article before you criticise him. Viser said the facility will be used by Africans so in a way we as a counstry will benefit from hosting the centre. However our roads need to be improved and other infrastructure if we are too really attract others to use the facility.
Thanks RB for the Judo Centre. At least I will start Judo and become one of the best. After all, it is just a matter of lifting each other. Simple game is’nt it?
Do we need other countries to build such facilities for us?  As a VERY UNDERDEVELOPED NATION we need other infrastructure to be built other than such now. In the meantime we can use other dormant halls for Judo. We may have a world class Judo facility but if we do not have decent roads, Airports, enough decent hotels etc, no one will even dream of bring any event to Zambia. Â
# 40..i conquer with u.we need such people in the zambian society.rome ws not built in a day,,so having a judo facilities is a step further to infrusture devpt,,who knows mayb another country ll pledge cash for constructing of new airports, bridges, power plants, roads etc..if turkey builds the centre they may also think of doing more to zambia providing they r given a gud conducive environment whch is possible,,n also rumours had it that the turkish airlines ll b coming to zed soon so it cud b easy fo zed business travellers to conduct their business in turkey..which cn also mayb innovate our airports..there4 devpt is a long term process it doesnt happen on a day..mwanawasas projects outcms r beeing noticed now bt he was criticzed, insulted by oppositions.credit to RB n more to come.
“Viser told President Banda in Instanbul, Turkey, that his federation has agreed to set up a multi-million judo centre in Zambia, the first of its kind in Africa, ahead of the 2012 Commonwealth Games in London.”
For some of you who do not carefully read stories, the decision to set up a Judo Centre in Zambia was long concluded and did not depend on RB GOING TO INSTAMBUL.The Judo Federation merely took advantage of RB’S PRESENCE IN TURKEY to convey this development. This therefore has nothing to do with Zambia’s prioritizing developmental projects. Moreover no single ngwee or Zambian Tax payers Kwacha will be used to construct the Judo Centre. So where is the problem that some b loggers can senselessly insult RB?
People seem to think being a President of a country is the easiest job. WHo exactly are you, and what have you done to be calling your President a foolish. If you don’t understand the article, don’t comment, rather than attacking him instead of appreciating the diversity and opportunities that very judo centre will bring. Did you not consider the fact that it will provide jobs, bring exposure for Zambia? Like all countries there’s always room for improvement. But while you’re attacking this man, take 5minutes of your day to look at the good he has done.
I”ve taken 10min and have not seen anything good he has done!, that makes him an even bigger F.O.O.L
Sebaana wikutee. What a president!!!!!:o:o
and the NAPSA blow we have heard?? $98 million dollars deal to renovate the Zambia National Building Society’s Society House, what a shame. I cant wait RB to go.
This man has sand for brains. What are our national priorities, if I may ask? UTH does not even get water supplies on a 24/7 basis I thought that this would be the first thing to sort out by any decent leadership. In addition, the current state of inadequate health manpower clearly informs one that money has to be spent to attract and retain all health workers. In addition, there is need to establish good working environment in education.
I would consider the retraining of Zambia Police as very important task because their recent form of running to shooting citizens is symptomatic of a corrupt regime and one that must be thrown out of power with its own chosen tools if they are not careful.
After hearing Obama speak, RB turned to a colleague and said “Ndiye ma president aya!”
Congrats RB. As long as you dont rush to South Africa for medical attention when the time comes. Even thandiwe should not go there!
Dick’s Son Jeleboy is a fundraising chairperson for Zambia Judo Association. Viser recently visited Zambia.. 3 to 4 months ago. He went to the Olympic Youth Development Centre in LSK where he promised that the International Judo Federation would soon put up a state of the art facility..and we r still waiting. He visited RB at State House where he made it clear that they were going to build the facility. So the meeting with Viser is no surprise to mee ..I love Judo and sport in general so don’t get me wrong, but dontch kubeba..Pa Bwato 4 ever
Someone needs a check up from the neck up. Brain is not functioning as it should. A multi million judo centre? what wrong with you?
This is the joke of the decade. This guy is into everything; telecommunications, sports, arms deals, land acquisition, etc. What are his ministers doing? This government has things upside down.
I happened to be in Lusaka on Monday and was told RB was flying out, little did I know he was going to Turkey to discuss on the Judo Centre, where is the minister of sport? visited Kitwe I could not believe the state of the town centre and the roads. The blue minibuses have taken over the town. Chisokone Market has expanded over the limit, could not see the stream that passes in between the market, wonder whether they are any health inspectors, as the place stinks. Coming back to lusaka they talk of investments, what I saw where the shopping malls owned by foreignors and a lot of filling stations. I also visited Soweto Market, i saw a new Soweto Market, with all the marketeers selling stuff outside the market and inside was empty.Because there is no control by the Council.
