Political analyst counsels chiefs on partisan politics

Share

A political analyst has condemned the emerging trend where traditional leaders are engaging in partisan politics.

Dr. Alex Ng’oma who is a senior lecturer in the school of humanities at the University of Zambia has told Qfm that traditional rulers play an important role in uniting the people in the country.

Dr. Ngoma has since advised chiefs in the country that in as much as they would want to add their voice on issues of national interest, they should desist from taking sides in matters of politics if there integrity is to be protected.

He observed that drawing traditional leaders into politics will put their credibility at risk as they are held in higher esteem by society.

Dr. Ng’oma says this in a wake of various chiefs who have openly declared their support for Republican President Rupiah Banda in this year tripartite elections.

  1. The Chiefs are so disappointing that their role as traditional leaders is being compromised. How can a chief in his right frame of mind endorse a politician? We know that RB gives them brown envelopes and second hand cars from Japan. But their people are suffering every day. The Chiefs’ utility will soon be a thing of the past. Hope Sata will bring sanity in the minds of some of the chiefs

  2. Some chiefdom have no schools and hospitals. Those that have, they do not have teachers, nurses and no medicine. I know of a Chief who was given a double sim phone by RB and he praised RB as if RB was a god.

  3. YOU ONLY HEAR OF A CHIEF ENDOSING ARABI WHEN HE IS BEING VISITED BY A GVT OFFICIAL. LOGICALY WE CAN CONCLUDE THAT CHIEFS SAY WHAT THEY SAY AFTER RECEIVING A BROWN EVELOP. REMEBER THE STORY OF A NAKED KING…… ONLY TELL HIM WHAT HE WANTS TO HEAR…………

  4. CHIEF MACHA  is not a boot licker to any of the Political leaders and he does not force his subjects to vote for a particular candidate BUT has respect and love for all political leaders out of wisdom from God. MACHA CHIEFDOM IS DEVELOPING THROUGH EMPOWERING SUBJECTS SOCIALY AND ECONOMICALLY ,EVEN THROUGH IT.AND SANITATION and he was awarded world award on good sanitation and promotion of good health to prolong his subjects life. NO POLITICAL BEGGING, KNEELING OR BROWN ENVELOPES.

  5. oh, the good doctor again, this time as lecturer not fodep president? he should start by removing the log in his eyes before pointing his dirty fingers at the chiefs. if this doctor had any integrity at all, he should condemn all forms of corruption, starting with lies and deception by some people. deceiving voters that you can deliver development in 90 days is the worst form of corruption in zambia today. this deception may have no immediate or visible monetary effect, but if someone wants to be elected as president of zambia through this deception, you can imagine what his ultimate goal is. it means that he is not interested in small change, but to lay his hands on the ultimate prize, i.e. state coffers. liar=thief=corruption, same difference.

  6. Chiefs are supposed to be non-partisan. What happens to the people in their villages who may have different views from them? Intimidation! RB shouldn’t be promoting any chief to back him he is the one inciting this behaviour. What a president!

  7. they will be shocked one day when the nation will pass a law not to recognise them then will know what it means. Tanzania and kenya traditonal chiefs where abolished so play around also in zambia it will come.

  8. let him campaign on a platform of truth, and chiefs will keep quiet or maintain neutrality. if your campaign is based on deception=corruption=theft, chiefs would have to be irresponsible to sit idly and watch such charlatans take over a beautiful country like zambia. in the history of Zambia, there has never been such overwhelming united countrywide support by chiefs across all tribes for a one particular presidential candidate. such support has usually been fragmented, but what is happening now tells a story: chiefs have seen something dangerous. chiefs have been diplomatic talking about development, which is true, but the main message to Zambians is in between the lines: don’t vote for thieves=corruption=deception.

  9. chiefs have been diplomatic talking about development, which is true, but the main message to Zambians is in between the lines: don’t vote for thieves=corruption=deception. don’t insult chiefs of having received brown envelopes as if we do not know the people who used to carry brown envelopes for ten years during the 1990s, they are on record as having carried k2billion to a party convention in 2001, the same mmembe and post wrote those true stories, now we are confused what to make of mmembe and post=charlatans.

  10. @5&6, answer the question, you know that someone cannot build roads, schools, hospitals and put cash in your pockets in 90 days not only in mongu but across zambia, so what is their motive for deceiving voters? if they have no ill motives why can’t they simply tell us and show us how they will do better than mmd? and while they are at it, let them first apologise to us for carrying those billions and brown envelopes in 2001. let then not think that because they dished out brown envelopes, everyone else is in the same game.

  11. I think chiefs should be as free as university lecturers, they should openly express their polical opinions if they have any. Lets not create invisible rules, if its not in the constitution its legal….. please chiefs campaign for whoever you like.

  12. Chiefs belong to all political parties, how their subjects belong to various political Parties and all Politicians are the subjects of all chiefs.Siding is not health becoz One day the Opposion will be the ruling.
