A Former Deputy Director for Information Technology at the Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ-, Mpundu Mfula who was arrested for corrupt practices involving 90,000 United States dollars has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Mr. Mfula made the plea when he appeared before Magistrate Ruth Chilembo.
54 year old Mfula was arrested by the Anti Corruption Commission-ACC- and charged with one count of corrupt practices by public officer contrary to the ACC Act.
ACC Public Relations Manager Timothy Moono, says the payment was made through a company called Aeron Limited of Mauritius as a commission for the supply and delivery of disposable booths, chairs and tables relating to the contract between ECZ and Universal Print Group.
The arrest of Mr. Mfula follows numerous concerns bordering on allegations of corruption involving officials at Universal Print Group, who were contracted to print ballot papers for the 2011 General Elections.

The biggest problem we have in Zambia is poverty and envy. Everyone wants to find loopholes in their work environment to make “riches” so they can be seen to be doing well. These corrupt practices are common place in Zambia and no contracts of any significance goes through the process without people getting paid. I remember the frosty responses I got from ECZ when I made enquiries on participating in the tender for the printing of ballot papers. Even getting a contact email of those responsible was impossible. I still wait even now!
Greed is the root to corruption :( the outcome is hindering development, why chairs not manufactured in Zambia, to empower local timber industries .. Shame that such thing could happen in order to steal.
MMD are to blame those crooks encouraged corruption big time.
This problem, be it corruption or business, is deep rooted in Zambian society and it will be cheap and misguided to blame it on the MMD. Besides, the current leadership is mostly MMD defectors.

This story is half baked and incomplete. When did this officer retire? Which period are we talking about? As everybody knows, the contract between ECZ and Universal Print Group in 2011 was NOT for the supply of chairs, tables or polling booths or anything like that but ballots only.

It is foolhardy to try and blame MMD for the corrupt behavior of individuals in Zambia. This problem stretches back to KK’s days.
