The United Party for National Development (UPND) is considering complaining to the United Nations on what they term as human rights abuses by the Patriotic Front government.

UPND presidential advisor Douglas Siakalima says it is a pity that the Zambia Police failed to respect individual human rights of the UPND youths when they broke-up the demonstration yesterday.

Mr. Siakalima has wondered why the Lusaka province Police commissioner Charity Katanga has declared war on the UPND.

He has accused the Lusaka province police chief of being compromised as portrayed by her behavior.

He has told a media briefing today that the conduct of the Police commissioner herself amounts to police brutality.

Mr. Siakalima says the UPND will soon engage the UN in order to address the purported deteriorating human rights record in Zambia.

And The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Zambia) has observed that the continued harassment of journalists by police is an attack on the free flow of information.

MISA Zambia Chairperson Daniel Sikazwe further states that an attack on the free flow of information becomes a direct attack on democracy.

Commenting on the beating by Police of QFM’s Alexander Musokotwane during the UPND demonstration yesterday, Mr. Sikazwe says it is a clear indication that the police ignored the journalist’s identity despite being told that he was merely doing his job.

Mr. Sikazwe says it is unfortunate that journalists end up being attacked whilst carrying out their duties.

He notes that MISA will soon engage the police to understand what exactly transpired and also to find ways of ensuring that such occurrences are not repeated in the future.

  1. The UN will laugh at this Tonga tribal party that wants to cause havoc in a peaceful country
Trying distabalize a democratically elected govt by resorting to illegal riots just cos their party can never win plot 1 cos of their tribalist stance

The UN chief will compare your motives to the KKK stance against Obama or the BNP racist stance against other races

    • Wechipuba, UPND violated the constitution. They never had a permit so it ws unlawful assembly. If they feel aggrieved why not go to Court and sue the govt?

  3. This is clearly a party of dunderheads, out to destroy my beautiful Country; what is the toothless UN going to do send UN observers? kekekeke

  4. At least if you were close-call silver medalists, as it is, you aren’t even a factor…2016 is not far away, just work harder, the right way.

  5. No dumb Maxwell, the un human rights commission can forward the name of charity Katanga and her political bosses to the security council for final reference to the ICC. Besides they wouldn’t pass the chance to make an example of you. This same toothless organisation has some id.iots dancing pelete in the Hague. The un is toothless to big powers not to banana republics run by half literate comedians!

  6. it can’t be denied that the matter is receiving court attention , why go ahead and protest……calling on youths not to be used. secondly, I never so sight of this pushing for demos…why? youths we ve yo be careful .Charity and team ..u are on the right path. ..

  7. Sata and Mugabe are best friends no wonder Sata is bringing Mugabe type of ruling in our Zambia. That Police behaviour is so uncivilized, Charity Katanga also acted like a PF cadre, why cant she be like the inteligent and smart Brenda Muntemba.

    • Ba filipo tekanyeni. Bushe have you bothered to find out Charity Katanga’s qualification? For your information Mugabe has 7 degrees and not honorary ones. Mwabe chintwenu ba filipo.

  8. Ba UPND mwaya sana, insults and lawlessness…..you are beginning to be a violent party with William Banda as your celebrity, Mazoka left a sensible party, you have turned it in a violent and regional grouping….I wish there a Tonga at UN ,mwailasha basa. Be civil.4 years to go.after which HH will be replaced.

  9. cry babies under 5s work up confrontation with the government will not take you any where. Which country do you want to rule which you want the donor community to stop funding? Who will suffer apart from your cows which have died of denkete? Even the little that is remaining will be wiped out. You suntwes.

  10. some people have extensively low IQ. I cannot vote for such people.Police brutality vs obvious breach of the law…

    • Go any where in the world and demonstrate without police consent in the USA, Germany, Greece, UK, they will give you a good hiding if you refuse to disperse!!

  11. It is all laughable. Why can’t Tonga men behave like their women who never cry aloud when they are beaten by their abusive husbands including HH?

  12. Just come back to the streets and protest…….this time around,u will be shot……..jokers of a party…….

  13. Old habits die hard 4 sure!this even reminds me of chawama 2001 by election brutality!the worst iz yet to come fro ths govt…mwafwa bane

  14. Ask Charles Tarlor and those chaps from the former Yugoslavia if the UN Human Rights is toothless.Ask the Kenya’s too. Katanga is a candidate for the Hague. It is just a matter of time.
It is not how many people you have killed or butttered. it is whether or not you violated their human rights-period

  15. Hichilema is very underfive this is when I have realised how underfive he is.What is this talk of reporting to UN for trivial matters. He has been very uncomfortable since Pastor Nervous became a party president. He’s become a better competitor than him thats why he’s trying to attract attention.MMD stay away from Hichilema.

  16. Imwe ba police, this act is 100% a hinderance to democracy.how do you beat up your fellow Zambians who are trying to air their gravances for the betterment of all Zambians including you when you will be called reterees????? @1 learn to be objective, who is talking about abt tribalism here???.If pipo will be beaten, who will check this govenment in terms of its policies??? Let be serious ok…

  17. Ba Rod, Ba Mr Dullard, even you know that if you don’t respect the law, the law won’t respect you. Even MMD in it day never broke the law if 1991 when they were denied permits by the One Party State Police, tell your people that the police will continue giving them a good hiding if they don’t conform.

  18. Upnd, you are useless. You are just demonstrating how stupidity you are. You were forewarned. Go aheard and express your dullness to un.swines.That’s why plot 1 is not fit for under 5s.

  19. Ba Rod,
I don’t know how old you are but if you are over 12 years old, even you will remember that PF never went ahead with protests or gatherings if they were denied permits as these are recipes for widespread violence and Civil disobedience.
Ka Under Five HH only cares about his own yellow belly and not the tranquillity will enjoy in my beautiful Zambia, why doesn’t he protest in his home town in Southern Province.

  20. why is this party so desperete for nothing just to exproit their cheap ignorances the the good government.upnd useless move.no place for u

  21. firstly i would want to say that am very disappointed that something like this happened in my beautiful country. however people should learn to respect the law. it is required in our law that whenever people demonstrate they should first be furnished by the permit from ZP. these guys defied the police and the law of Zambia. besides, why is UPND bent on removing nchito? they claim that the judiciary is not corrupt, so let them go to the courts if they have evidence. UPND is doing a very good job of de-compaining   themselves. the Zambian are wise enough to see their tricks. but the police should have dispersed demonstrators without being violent with them. the police acted unprofessionally too!

  22. UPND should start campaigning now (if they want to rule), i think they are spending a lot of their time on very useless things, this time you will be number 4 with 6% votes.

  23. Charity Katanga need to be advised that one of the 3 Kenyas at the International Court of Justice facing Human slaughter and other charges is a police chief office. She is not different from them and Kenyan govt is no where to protect them. PF govt will no longer be available when you are going to face those charges——–, watch it develop to a full turn of events.

    • She has a valid case here: no permit no protest if you have a problem with that take it to court simples.

  24. in the first place, demostrating for what? can the police cage all the top upnd officials who are influencing these young youths. these youth suppose to concentrate in schools or doing constrative these orther than involving themselves in these useless demos. well done lusaka police command. we do not want indiscipline. zambaia is a peace Nation.

  25. From many of the above postings, it confirms to me that Bembas will stop at nothing but eat even UKWA’s fecal matter for as long as he is their tribesman. Are you sure all those who were demonstrating are Tonga??? Plain idio.cy

  26. Sata is a dictator just like his friend Mugabe. UN should come in and save us from this PF government, this government will soon end whether you like it or not. I regret voting for these *****s. Madam Katanga there are human rights one you may be caught up in the webs, dont be used.

  27. i’m told syakalima was beaten by his wife last week so he has also lodged a compalint with HRC and alangisi………this chap is really looking for attention, what do want the UNHRC to do? I wonder if this guy is still lecturing at UNZA, if so i humbly ask the senate of UNZA to get rid of this failure.

  28. I hope UPND youth whom are nursing wounds today have learnt a valuable lesson, next time your leader sends you ask him to accompany you and  let him lead from the front.
Zambia Police will dish out the same treatment again, if you come out on to my streets without papers again. No rubbish in my town.
    Get well soon.

    With warmiest regards
    Ms. Charity Katanga
    Lusaka province Police commissioner

  29. If you jump in the path of a bullet expect to be injured. Was Kakoma among those who were clobbered? My advice to the youth is; do not allow yourselves to be used as pawns. Genuine leaders lead from the FRONT.

  30. @ mimi
, we know that you are UPND but when you part is wrong please learn to accept. am not PF but i remember mwanawasa denined them a permit one time , they had to seek legal redress and if am not mistaken sunday nkonde ruled in there favour that when they held a demo……dont be bitter… and dont whoever is against UPND then is Bemba …its not like that

  31. Maxwell@ 20, It seems you have forgotten that the MMD in 1990 were facing charges of illegal assembly in Choma after the police had denied them a permit. The number one accused was Frederick Chiluba and the chief lawyer was Vincent Malambo. If you do not know your facts you are better of keeping quiet.

  32. @33 I think you would make more sense if you went further to say that not all who support UPND is Tonga.

  33. The Zambian law does not mention of any police permit but notification. So those who respect the law of the land let them respect those UPND demonstrators. it is their right. The talk of police permit is a talk outside the Zambian law.

  34. UPND are still in shock and they want to fight the fight that they can not win. Perhaps they have run out senses such that they feel they are untouchable and above the law. The police in the past have beaten UNIP, PF and now its the UNPD and MMD. Law is Law. The idea of the UNPD is that they, they want to fight the PF govt inderectly so that people see that Sata has failed to govt. This move is short lived. UNDER FIVE AND HIS BRAIN WASHED THUGS THINK THEY ARE GOD.BEAT THEM

  35. I KNOW HH WILL BLAME IT ON WILLIAM BLUNDER WHO HAS JUST JOINED THEM.
SOUR GRAPES BA HH, YOU NEED TO HEAL, BITTERNESS WON’T HELP, BEGIN TO REORGANISE YOUR PARTY.

  36. UPND are wasting their time. The best thing they can do is reorganise their sinking party because they have lost direction. Shame on HH!!!!

  37. HAAAAA HAAAA HAAAAAA!!!!!! HOOOOOOO!!!! Don’t dare break my ribcage!! HA AH AH AAAAHHHAAAAAAAAA!!! Oh boy! HAAAAA HAAA HAAAA!!!! Need some water – someone please! HAAAA HAAAAAA HAAAAAAH!!!!!!! Somebody take these comedies out of here!! AAAAHAAAAAA HAAAAAA!!!!!! OOOOOOOH HAAAAAA!!!! Make it stop!!! Somebody please!!! HAAAAAA HAAAA….

  38. I have no sympathy for the attention seeking and police clobbered UPND cadres. UPND have vowed to make this country ungovernable and hence there fidgeting with anything that can lead to anarchy. Why didn’t Hakainde & Kalima with there horde of lawyers take the denial for a permit to court so that the police are directed to comply by giving them a permit and policing the demonstration?
Anyway, UNHCR is very busy trying to save our brothers & sisters in Syria who have a genuine case of being massacred and brutalised!
Some of us are apolitical and are more interested in tangible development activities than this support of the corrupt judiciary and judges. The Zambian judiciary is only clean in the eyes of UPND! Next time Charity arrest them & prosecute them within 48 hours!

  39. All Zambians have the right to hold peaceful demonstrations and there is no law that prevents that. It is sad that the Police are the ones violating the rule of law. What is sad is the high levels of ignorance on many blacks who still “know” that people should obtain a police permit to hold peaceful demonstrations.

  40. From the comments i see that Zambians have become very low creatures. They are even unaware that the law requiring a police permit was repealed 10 years ago. What low apes would condone human beings trampled on the ground? This country is on sure wrong path. There is no unity in sight. Humanity is challenged.

  41. UPND you should have applied for a permit if there is such a thing. Don’t involve the UN and their gay agendas in our internal affairs.

  42. #Ku chiwempala, we are witnessing the worst form of pf cadreisim at the moment! All pr cadres are behaving exactly like their leader; being nonsensical in veverything they do or say!

  43. All pf morons who keep on mentioning the ‘permit’ crap, what is so difficult to understand here? UPND DID NOT need to apply for any crap permit, they only NEEDED to INFORM the police of their intention to hold a procession, period!

    • then go court, since the judiciary is not corrupt u have a very good chance of winning. hahahahahakekekekekeeeeeeeeeeeee

  44. # Wanzelu. PF members are incapable to hear that FACT, remember their leader school he came from? All they insist is no permit was granted. Police were merely informed in UK by Zimbabweans to protest against Mr Sata in UK. Police obliged and protected the demonstrators. Police any whaere in the world do not give permit for peacefull demonstrations. Only a fearful state and undemocratic countries brutalise its citizens and Zambia in today one of that state witnessed all over the world. Mr Sata is brutal and beats up its citizens who demonstrate peacefully.

  45. #Muna, got your point. I rarely comment on these boards but these cadres have really irritated me. Why can’t they just shut up if they ahve nothing sensible to say? Sorry, I forgot that their leader Ukwa does the same if not worse!

  46. the politics at play are that hakaivotela heka (HH) aka under 5 has been shaken by NEVERLANDS (NEVERS MUMBA) and reduced deeper in the pecking order. To win recognition, from now on; upnd ll do all sorts of silly things. Whats jacky mwiimbu doing in that picture with BOKO HARAM & BANYAMULENGE commander. [-(

  47. At least now UPND have realised that they will never rule Zambia.
It is good that they now want HH to be the UN Secretary General so let them campaign at the UN.
