Some media houses are no longer watchdogs – Saki

Share

Lawyer Sakwiba Sikota

Prominent Lusaka Lawyer Sakwiba Sikota has charged that some media houses in the country have ceased to be watchdogs of government.

Mr. Sikota who is also leader of the opposition United Liberal Party (ULP) told Qfm news in an interview that the media failed to provide checks and balances on government’s deficiencies in the administration of national affairs.

He says it is unfortunate that media that was vibrant and always questioned government’s decisions has gone mute on a number of issues.

Mr. Sikota has therefore challenged the media in the country to uphold professionalism in their operations stating that they are critical to national development and the promotion of democracy in Zambia.

He says the lack of unprofessionalism exhibited by some sections of the media is causing injury to the whole media industry and has since called for impartiality if the media are to fulfill their mandate.

The ULP leader says the media is a strategic industry in the country which must always aim at serving the interests of the majority citizens.

  1. Just mention it! Its THE POST you are talking about. Why are you being too general? You are not the only one who has noticed that, any reasonable and rational Zambian  has.

  2. He says the lack of unprofessionalism exhibited by some sections of the media is causing injury to the whole media industry and has since called for impartiality if the media are to fulfill their mandate.
    – Shouldnt lack of unprofessionalism be a good thing in the first place?

  3. What is he talking about? ” Lack of unprofessionalism…..” Spare us the crap and just say you are an MMD stooge and you loved the way MMD cadres like Chimba, run the media. These parties with no members, no MP’s ,no councillors to represent them should not even be called opposition parties. They are lobby groups. There are by-elections going on, contest them to prove that you are a party!!

  4. They are too dull to understand what you mean, sir. But well said, and we know who they are.

  5. Its true, we have never ready on checks and balance from the media houses examples… An article on police abuse of state funds, secret abortion by unqualified personals, teachers having affairs with student what are unions doing what and who is responsible for who, Parliament discussions, MPs just sleeping, actions of ministers and checking on what they promised, who is in charge of the dirty in our cities why they are not working, Bank of Zambian roles, meetings, statistic data flaws what else has been discover in Zambian who is in charge etc…in SA such has become known even to the unlearned street person…. Media we need

  6. Esp the post Zambia. Look at how Mmembe said during Chiluba& Mwanawasa against SATA. Time truly is the best exposure of deceit. hey why LT Not including the link:):)

  7. It seems the word “PROMINENT” in Zambia is only reserved for certain professions, we always hear/read about Prominent Lusaka Lawyer, Prominent Economist, Prominent Politician etc. We never hear of stuff like Prominent Lusaka Engineer, Prominent Doctor, Prominent Marketeer, Prominent Kaponya, LOL

  8. It’s obvious that it’s the writer, masquerading as a reporter, who made the glaring error of ‘lack of unprofessionalism’.

Bo Sikota, you don’t really expect them to provide checks and balances on themselves, do you? Why would they go on and expose themselves? They may be compromised but they aren’t stoopid.

Remember how you used to represent the same media people in the courts of law when FTJ was allegedly persecuting them? I was young then and you was a good lawyer before you joined politics; and he was a definition of fearless. I wouldn’t miss reading your courts ‘verbatim’ reports. The two of you were everything I aspired to be in terms of integrity. But then you joined politics and both of you ended up selling your soul for a silver.

  9. STUPID DOG OF WAR LAWYER! HE SHOULD JUST SAY HE MISSES RB AND THE DROPPINGS FROM STATE HOUSE DINNER TABLE.

  10. You could be right see what lies the ZWD is spreading and its sister paper National something The post also has its fair own stance on the govt. Not lying because of hate at least the post informed us about X Chungu almost becoming PS.Not the others who hate. As for SAKI masushi yenu ba SAKI we know who you are and like many others disgruntled by MCS victory it you right to lose and feel bitter better luck next time if there will be one.

  11. @Yaba wansekesha boyi. Funny, ati prominent Kaponya…lol kekekekekeke. There was Kadobi at Kulima tower as an MMD cadre. There was Chibale on the copperbelt posing as MMD youth chairperson there. He was kind of a jerabo, even threatening to “sort out” Paul Duffy of Mongu diocese.

  12. Saki, you should have been the leader of UPND had it not been for Mwanajiti Ngande, Douglas Siakalima, Ackson Sejane and others who looked at tribe and money. Now you have no councilor, no MP and your membership is not known. Some leaders are not adventurous.

  13. Someone tell me. Has the PF government managed to “close down the internets?” I am failing to access the zambian watchdog.

  14. Saki is right about the falling standards of professionalism in journalism. The Levison inquiry in the UK would be shocked at the role of M’membe and The Post and how they have President Sata in their pocket.

  15. Saki is certainly a prominent lawyer. Even those making negative comments about Saki would choose him as their lawyer over other lawyers if they run foul of the law.

  16. Sir-Kwiba, Lawyer for plunderers and prsident for nashala neka party. trying to sound relevant when his time in politics is over. it wil be interesting to see him after all the cases are over and his clients are in chooks.

  17. If you are talking about the Post they just dont criticise anyhow, but look at you I saw you in Chipata at MMD last rally shamelessly supporting a regime which even children knew was corrupt, you never spoke against the the ruling party then, which glaringly abused the media. The Post has been the most reliable paper Zambia has ever had, and the editorial predictions almost always come true. Didnt they warn the late former presido, were they not warning Alabi, didnt they warn some judges, didnt they warn HaHa over the 2011 elections, Dola etc. Dyani chabe ndalama zama plunderer, chikali kutibaba ma civil servants, how you people used public resources with your Alabi while us police, prisons na bakaidi tinalibe ma uniform, hence our chucking u out! GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.

  18. would this be the same saki who store tax payers money during rb reign? This man abandoned his party, joined rb on his every campaign tour; chewing allowances. Tax payers money without remorse. Whats he talking about, he is daily selling his soul to one with a big carrot to dungle.

  19. The question is whether or not we have a vibrant press doing what it is suppossed to do, The answer is clearly that over the last nine moths The Post has become an apologist for the PF and Mr. SATA. Saki is right. As for his defending clients, that is what lawyers do.

  20. Saki is right, Zambian media publications are both boring and useless. Even The Post which had a bit of credibility has become a “praise-singer” for Sata and PF. May be it is too much to expect a vibrant media in a boring and underdeveloped country like Zambia.
