Epidemics worry Nkandu Luo

Prof Luo shares a light moment with Dr.Kamoto Mbewe

Local Government Minister, Nkandu Luo, says she is saddened by the escalating outbreaks of epidemics in the country as a result of poor sanitation.

Speaking this morning at Macha in Choma, prof Luo said outbreaks of epidemics such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery have been escalating.

The minister said this is an indication that the state of sanitation in the country is poor.

Prof Luo was speaking when Chief Macha was bestowed with the honour of UNICEF Ambassador on sanitation.

The minister noted that unsafe disposal of human excreta has the potential to cause disease outbreaks.

The minister has directed councils in the country to intensify their efforts in the fight against open defecation.

She urged councillors to join the fight against open defecation instead of engaging in illegality such as sharing plots.

  1. The minister should not be surprised because this is not a first time occurrence. What the country needs are stringent policies on Pit Latrines, Septic Tanks and Trash Disposal. Technically all community residential locations MUST be connected to a running water sewer line. We now live in the modern times and adoption of the existing technologies to implement operational sewer and drainage systems is no longer rocket science. Put the Civil Engineers and Environmental Health Professionals to use. As a nation we should not subject ourselves to excuses and yet solutions are right in front of our noses. Shame on you madam minister.

  2. WHY SHOULD YOU TALK ABOUT PIT LATRINES BEFORE YOU ADDRESS STREET VENDING .
ARE YOU GOING TO DIG PIT LATRINES ON LUMUMBA, CAIRO ROAD ETC.
LETS WAIT FOR THE RAINY SEASON,THERE WILL BE AN OUTBREAK OF CHOLERA ON CAIRO RD.

  3. #2 What you must understand is that when the rain season comes, the underground water table rises causing flooding of latrines (Those that are poorly constructed). Secondly if you have boreholes close to them, the water drawn from undergound is conclusively polluted. With or without street vending sanitation is number one big issue. One Zambia One Nation.

  4. You are my aspiration , I possess few blogs and sometimes run out from to post .
