Government acknowledges the vital role that content creators play in Zambia’s economic growth

Government has acknowledged the vital role that content creators play in the Zambia’s economic growth.

Speaking during the inaugural Zamtel Social media awards, Minister of Justice, Princess Kasune, who graced the occasion, highlighted that the government remains resolute to ensure that the country’s digital ecosystem is safe, inclusive, as well as enabling.

She explained that in as much as social media has empowered many youths to showcase the country, talent, among others on the global stage, also has the power to bring people together.

ZANIS reports that the Minister has since called on content creators to use social media in building better communities through positive messaging.

Ms Kasune charged that young people must ensure that they use social media responsibly, noting that it is a great tool that can be used to unite people.

Ms Kasune further challenged local content creators at all levels, to look beyond entertainment, citing an environment where rights of creators are safeguarded, as well as encouraging responsible innovation.

“Government stands ready to compliment such initiatives, in order to ensure that young people thrive in a conducive environment,” she said.

Speaking at the same function, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary for Arts, Chama Fumba highlighted that social media has what he dubbed, people power, which was once only held by a selected few, citing that today one just needs a smartphone to create content.

Earlier in his welcoming remarks, Zamtel Chief Executive Officer, Jason Mwanza, noted that with a faster growing base of social life in the country, Zambia has an opportunity that can contribute to the nation’s development through content creation.

Mr Mwanza stated that through the establishment of the 5 G undertakings, Zamtel is laying the foundation for a true future, adding that his company is rewarding one of the content creators with a brand new Toyota hilux.

On behalf of Zamtel he further congratulated the nominees for contributing to the country’s growth.

Some of the awards went to the best meme category, which was scooped by Zakado the Boxer, who also won best animation content creator collectively walking away with K50, 000 prize money.

The Best tourism and travel content creator was awarded to “Beautiful Zambia”, an online platform that shares Zambia’s beauty and has contributed to the influx of tourists visiting the country.

While, the most inspirational content creator award went to the late Dora Moono Nyambe, who passed away this year while taking care of more than 500 vulnerable children in Central Province.

These and many other categories were presented to well deserving winners.

The Zamtel social media awards were characterised by a night of glitz and glam with guests adorned in black with a touch of gold.

The social media awards were launched earlier this year with the aim to appreciate Zambian content creators and social media influencers from different digital platforms, at the same time enhancing the Zamtel brand associating it to be more youth centric and the most desirable brand.
