The government has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of a 28-year-old female patient who died at Lukulu District Hospital, while urging the public to respect healthcare workers and uphold patient confidentiality.
Speaking during a joint press briefing, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, confirmed that the patient, who had been living with epilepsy, was referred to Lukulu District Hospital from Luvuzi Mini Hospital in Western Province in a semi-comatose state. Despite intensive efforts to resuscitate her and treat her for malaria parasites, she tragically passed away.
Dr. Lishimpi underscored the importance of trust and cooperation between patients, families, and healthcare providers, stressing that interference with medical personnel during critical procedures can have grave consequences. He further highlighted the dangers of late presentation of illnesses, urging citizens to seek prompt medical attention to improve outcomes.
“Families with concerns should use established complaint channels at the district health office or consult the doctor in charge, ensuring grievances are addressed fairly and transparently,” Dr. Lishimpi advised.
Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Information and Media, Mr. Thabo Kawana, appealed to the public to desist from recording and circulating videos from hospitals, noting that such actions breach patient confidentiality and dignity.
He condemned the circulation of sensitive footage on social media, especially during the election period, stressing that such behavior undermines healthcare efforts and can have serious consequences, including loss of life.
“Those who engage in this conduct will face consequences under the law. Citizens must respect healthcare workers and the critical role they play in saving lives,” Mr. Kawana stated.
