Hichilema Would Win 60% of Vote if Election Held Today, New Poll Shows

A new national opinion poll indicates that if a presidential election were held today, incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema would secure a decisive victory with 60 percent of the vote, against a combined 35 percent for opposition candidates.

The survey, conducted by independent consultants under the supervision of leading demographer Dr. Namuunda Mutombo of the University of Zambia, reveals a substantial advantage for the President. In all hypothetical head-to-head matchups against potential unified opposition candidates, President Hichilema’s support falls within a band of 58 to 63 percent.

The findings point to rising optimism about the nation’s trajectory and growing support for the President ahead of the 2026 elections. Nearly two-thirds of respondents now agree with the statement that “Zambia is slowly turning a corner and there is light at the end of the tunnel,” marking a significant positive shift in public sentiment compared to earlier surveys.

Furthermore, the poll shows that 58 percent of Zambians believe President Hichilema has largely kept the promises he made to voters. This counters opposition narratives and appears to reinforce perceptions of the President’s credibility and record of delivery.
