Chinese businessman fined K1,200 for selling counterfeit Puma shoes!

Chinese businessman fined K1,200 for selling counterfeit Puma shoes!
Simon Huang, a Chinese businessman, has been sentenced to pay a K1,200 fine after he admitted selling shoes with counterfeit Puma trademarks, contrary to Section 6(1) of the Merchandise Marks Act.
Evidence was that between July 1, 2025, and August 7, 2025, he allegedly offered for sale 95 pairs of men’s shoes bearing a trademark resembling the registered Puma mark, likely to deceive.
Facts are that August, 7, 2025, the Zambia police Service received a complaint from Paulus Ramara of PUMA SE that they noticed that there were some shops in Lusaka town whose owners were selling fake shoes with their trademark.
Upon receiving this information, a sergeant Muyombwe and other officers, after obtaining a search warrant, rushed to Fortune shop where they seized 95 pairs of shoes with a fake Puma se trade mark which were being sold by the now, accused person, Mr Huang.
The accused was apprehended and taken to Zambia police Intellectual property Unit where he disclosed that although he was selling those shoes, he was very much aware that they were not genuine products of Puma se and that he did not manufacture them but ordered them from someone.
Under warn and caution statement administered to him in English the language he understood better, he gave a free and voluntary reply admitting the charge.
Huang admitted the allegations, begged for leniency, and profusely apologized to Lusaka magistrate Idah Phiri, who excercised leniency when imposing the punishment.
The shoes will be forfeited to the State.

  1. No Tikki please! It’s time Zambia and other third world countries took intellectual property law seriously.
How will you support local creativity if I can obtain fake goods and sell them without fear of consequences? I will continue selling fake goods and ignore authentic goods local or foreign.
K1200 can’t be the fine for such a big offence. That’s a pat on the back for pirating and copyright infringement
