The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested six suspects in separate operations across the country and seized more than 1,000 kilogrammes of cannabis.
According to DEC Deputy Public Relations Officer Theresa Mawere, officers in Lusaka apprehended Musuamba Nicole Kabongo, 33, a Congolese national, at the Intercity Bus Terminus while she attempted to collect luggage containing 33 pre-packed parcels of suspected high-grade cannabis. The consignment had reportedly arrived on a bus from South Africa and was allegedly concealed to avoid detection.
Ms Mawere said the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation involving a controlled delivery coordinated with officers in Chirundu.
In another operation, officers from Mansa arrested Albert Chilufya, 33, for allegedly cultivating 868 kilogrammes of cannabis in Muombe Village in Chembe District.
In Kalumbila District, DEC officers arrested Benjamin Kindalo, 24, for alleged unlawful cultivation of 150 kilogrammes of cannabis plants and trafficking in 850 grammes of loose cannabis. Another suspect, Joseph Kindalo, 48, was also arrested in the same area for alleged unlawful cultivation of 115 kilogrammes of cannabis plants and trafficking in 20.2 kilogrammes of loose cannabis found at his premises.
Meanwhile, in Muchinga Province, officers arrested Moses Mulenga, 43, in Chipunga Village in Chinsali District for alleged unlawful cultivation of 70 kilogrammes of cannabis plants.
The Commission has urged members of the public to continue providing information that can assist law enforcement agencies in combating drug trafficking and protecting communities, particularly young people, from the dangers associated with illicit drugs.
