Printing of chitenge materials at Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles starts

The long-awaited printing of chitenge materials at the Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe District of Central Province has commenced, beginning with a test run that will last a few weeks in preparation for the official commissioning of the plant.

Central Province Permanent Secretary, Milner Mwanakampwe, says the printing at the factory which stopped operations 19 years ago, started yesterday.

Dr Mwanakampwe has told the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Kabwe that the company is producing high-quality fabric capable of competing on the international market.

He adds that the textile firm will also be able to export its products to other countries in the Southern region.

Dr Mwanakampwe has further stated that the government will ensure the material is of good quality and supplied at the right price and at the right time.

  1. How many times have we seen this plant being commissioned. Maybe i need clarification on the meaning of commissioning because i now doubt my understanding.

    • Commissioning: asking the upnd to turn up at an event, any event and pretending it’s a successful commercial venture

  2. Yeah try and compete with kente in Ghana and the DRC’s dynamic versions of Chittenden. Wake up Africa!

  3. Chitenge is africas mother cloth…….

When it went to China , Africa lost its path….

    • Africa’s visitors always take advantage of our lack of commercial initiatives. Because we are humanists we are slow at exploiting traditional products. The franchise for Chibuku, our very own beer, is owned by a German who lived in Northern Rhodesia and Salisbury.

  4. @Kunula:You are in USA but still dull. Under the UPND administration, the Mulungushi textile factory is set to commence operations, regardless of personal opinions. Only those lacking insight would fail to recognize its success as a commercial venture. Rather than relying on imports for Army and police uniforms, Mulungushi will manufacture them locally. Additionally, what provisions are there for school uniforms and nursing uniforms? Workers in the mining sector will also be outfitted in locally produced work suits. Furthermore, our mothers will appreciate the chitenge fabric, which will be produced domestically.pf failed to do this in 10yrs.It took 4yrs for people who are serious. Our farmers have resumed cultivating cotton on a global scale, with the market being within reach.

    • The UPND has held power for only four years. The PF has left behind merely an empty shell of Mulungushi after their decade-long rule..Note the difference pls
