Sangwa Targets August 13 Ballot

Prominent lawyer John Sangwa has confirmed that the Movement for National Renewal (MNR) has begun its transition from a civic platform into a fully fledged political party, positioning the organisation to participate in Zambia’s general elections scheduled for August 13.

The announcement marks a formal shift in the movement’s direction, moving from civic engagement toward direct electoral participation. Sangwa said the step signals the start of a new political undertaking designed to raise governance standards while placing citizens at the centre of national policy discussions.

According to Sangwa, the movement will now focus on developing a “people’s manifesto,” which he described as a national policy framework shaped by the concerns and priorities of citizens across the country. The document, he said, will outline the policy direction the organisation intends to pursue as it seeks public support during the upcoming elections.

Sangwa explained that the manifesto process will involve broad consultation with citizens in order to reflect what he termed the real expectations of Zambians regarding governance, accountability and national development. The approach, he stated, seeks to anchor the movement’s political programme in citizen participation rather than traditional top-down policy formulation.

The Movement for National Renewal was initially launched as a civic initiative aimed at encouraging greater public engagement in national affairs. Over time, its founders say the level of public response convinced them that the organisation had the potential to develop into a structured political movement capable of contesting elections.

Meanwhile, MNR partner Dolika Banda said the decision to transition into a political party follows significant public backing that the organisation has received since its formation.

Banda said the movement had set a target of reaching one million citizens and confirmed that the organisation had already achieved that benchmark, a development she described as a clear sign of growing public interest in the initiative.

She explained that the original intention behind MNR was to create a civic platform through which citizens could participate more actively in national conversations about governance and public policy.

However, Banda stated that as the movement expanded, it became increasingly clear that the level of engagement from the public indicated the possibility of building a political organisation capable of contesting elections.

She said the transition into a political party would allow the movement to convert civic participation into structured political representation.

The process of transforming MNR into a political party is expected to involve organisational restructuring, policy development and the establishment of party structures across the country as preparations for the August elections continue.

Sangwa said the movement’s immediate priority will be the development of the people’s manifesto and consultations with citizens on policy priorities that should shape the party’s electoral programme.

He said the goal of the manifesto process is to build a political agenda rooted in public expectations and grounded in proposals that address national governance challenges.

The Movement for National Renewal now joins a growing list of political organisations positioning themselves ahead of the August 13 general elections, which are expected to draw participation from both established political parties and new entrants seeking to test their support among voters.

Sangwa stated that the transition marks the beginning of what he described as a new phase for the movement as it prepares to engage the electorate with its policy agenda and organisational structures ahead of the national vote.

  4. It is his democratic right. But I know he will even be defeated by rejected ballots. More fragmentation in the opposition, it is called democracy in English but mpingambizi(confusion) in my language. With the way the incumbent has failed, this was a chance to reduce him to less than 50+1 in August

  5. Is Sangwa aware that Changala has warned of an endorsement scam going on? He says some councillors were scammed into an endorsement some where but he does not know where to report the scam
