Govt questions delay in pursuing Mundubile over theft allegations

Government has questioned why law enforcement agencies have not taken action following allegations raised against Tonse Alliance president Brian Mundubile, raising fresh political tension within Zambia’s opposition landscape.

Chief government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said investigative agencies should examine claims made by former Patriotic Front official Chishimba Kambwili concerning Mundubile. Mweetwa stated that the allegations had entered the public domain and therefore required attention from institutions mandated to investigate criminal matters.

According to Mweetwa, law enforcement agencies operate independently and are expected to determine whether allegations presented to them warrant further investigation or prosecution. He indicated that the responsibility to act rests with investigative institutions, which must assess evidence before taking any legal steps.

The government spokesperson said his remarks reflected questions being asked by members of the public regarding the handling of the allegations. He added that transparency in the investigative process remains important in maintaining public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

The allegations referenced by government officials stem from claims previously made by Kambwili, who accused Mundubile of involvement in matters related to theft involving Chishimba Kambwili. The accusations became part of wider political exchanges within opposition circles, drawing attention from both government and party leaders.

Mundubile, who serves as president of the Tonse Alliance and has been associated with Patriotic Front politics, has been at the centre of a broader dispute involving leadership positions within the opposition. The controversy has developed alongside ongoing tensions within the PF and allied political formations as leaders position themselves ahead of future elections.

Political developments surrounding Mundubile intensified after PF acting national chairperson Jean Kapata stated that he should no longer be regarded as a member of the Patriotic Front. Kapata said Mundubile’s association with individuals attempting to create alternative political structures effectively placed him outside the PF organisation.

These developments have exposed deeper divisions within opposition ranks, where competing leaders have publicly articulated their political ambitions and disagreements regarding party leadership.

Government officials say institutions responsible for investigations must be allowed to carry out their work independently, free from political influence. Mweetwa emphasised that the state does not direct investigative agencies on which cases to pursue but expects them to respond when allegations of wrongdoing arise.

The situation has attracted attention from political observers who note that disputes within opposition parties have become increasingly visible in the public domain. Leadership contests and internal disagreements have played a significant role in shaping the opposition’s political narrative in recent months.

While the allegations remain part of ongoing political exchanges, investigative authorities have not yet publicly announced any formal charges or investigations relating to the matter.

The evolving dispute continues to unfold against the backdrop of broader political realignments within Zambia’s opposition, where leaders are attempting to consolidate influence and define their roles ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

    • They get ducks in some kind of row if the accused is from the opposition. We should rename the investigation wings as the anti opposition forces

  1. Pure and simply political pursecution now
Police should be left to pursue this case when all facts are known

  2. Why are you trying to start political persecution. What on earth is wrong with Zambian politicians? Scared of losing power, they start persecuting any perceived threat. This is how Rwanda ended up with a genocide. The UPND is the first government in Zambia that is leading the country to such levels of political and ethnic tensions. If we are bot careful they will lead the country to a very dark place.

  3. I also wonder why those who built houses or ‘own’ plots in Forest 27 are busy noticing others faults it is in public domain so it ought to be investigated with the full wrath of the law….and houses demolished

  4. This government feels insecure at every turn. Openly using the LEAs to persecute the opposition. Meanwhile the Muchendes, are walking free. This corruption fight is a sham.

  5. It is not government who is accusing mundubile of theft but his fellow PF member. If indeed there is proof that he was involved in shady deals then he should be arrested elections or no elections.

    • If it’s fellow PF accusers why should police be interested? They should know its empty accusations without evidence
