Veteran MPs, avoid the Waterloo; give chance to others!

By Prince Bill M. Kaping’a

One of our attributes or weaknesses in our political engagements is obviously the ability to call a spade a spade, and not otherwise! This has of course won us a few enemies in political circles as politicians would rather hearken to praises about them as opposed to the naked truth.

A while back, we produced an article titled, “Heed the President’s counsel; read the signs and retreat…”

In the same offering, we besseched long serving UPND MPs to heed the President’s counsel and give chance to fresh blood. During the funeral service for the late Local Government Service Commission Chairman, Ackson Sejani, who also happened to be former Local Government Minister in the MMD regime, at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross August 5, 2025, President Hichilema advised his long serving MPs to emulate Sejani by reading the signs and passing on the baton.

To the uninitiated, when Sejane realised that the conditions did not favour him to retain his seat in Mapatizya constituency, he willingly stepped aside to allow for the injection of new blood.

So far, Mwinilunga MP Newton Samakai and his Ikeleng’i counterpart, Elijah Julaki Muchima have heed the call and informed the nation they won’t be recontesting their seats, respectively, opting instead to campaign for the President. The grapevine equally has it the Mazabuka Central MP, Gary Nkombo won’t be running again……kudos to him if this indeed happens to be true!

To cut the long story short, this article has been motivated by the primary election results trickling in from Monze East constituency where Jack Mwiimbu, the Minister of Internal Affairs & Security is the incumbent. Hon. Mwiimbu has literally been rejected in his constituency…..at times accumulating zeros in certain wards! Consider the results hereunder:

Monze East Constituency MP Ward results

1. Chisekese Ward :

– Victor Cheelo 44
– Jack Mwiimbu 0

2. Singonya Ward:

– Victor Cheelo 35
– Jack Mwiimbu 5

3. Chipembele ward :

– Victor Cheelo 36
– Jack Mwiimbu 8

4. Ufwenuka ward :

– Victor Cheelo 23
– Jack Mwiimbu 18

5. Mayaba ward:

– Victor Cheelo 0
– Jack Mwiimbu 30

6. Manungu ward:

– Victor Cheelo 10
– Jack Mwiimbu 19 Chibbabbuka 11

Total:
Victor Cheelo 149
Jack Mwiimbu: 80
Chibbabbuka : 11

If you’re a Jack Mwiimbu supporter, would you still encourage him to go for it? Aikona man! If you really love the man interpret the situation to him as it obtaining ‘pa ground.’ Let the man concentrate on campaigning for the President; he can still be nominated as MP considering his vast experience and knowledge.

  1. This is not the issue. The elephant in the room is the poor economy which the current government has grounded to its knees. The President should have handed the baton to some body else in UPND who has the capacity to change things. Don’t you realise people are just being fed propaganda, pa ground its tough

    • I agree, in the PF days, bread, meat, mealie meal and other essentials were much cheaper, I can remind you here of the prices in case you want to argue for the sake of arguing as usual. Failure is very visible. To come back and do what Mr President please

    • I had a dream two weeks ago and, believe it or not, the president was “handing the baton to some body else in UPND!”
Everybody in the Heroes stadium was wide eyed, their jaws had dropped to the ground,
And I could see Bill Kapinga, Cornelius Mweetwa, Thabo Kawana, Jack Mwiimbu, Syakalima and Kabuswe, all being carried out on stretchers. They had fainted!!

  2. Jack Mwimbu is untouchable. He knows where the bodies are buried. But he has also been a very bad Home Affiars minister. I thought Kamyongo was bad, but Jack is ‘worser.’ He has failed to do a better than Public Order Act. Giving more power to the Executive (the police and the minister) to decide who gathers is just wrong. Going to court in Zambia is not only expensive but also a waste of time. Essentially, the country has banned anti government gatherings.

  3. The While UPND has failed us,we had hope that they will change things for better but it is 100% opposite.Free Education and CDF so much talked about has done NOTHING.Let us try others may be they look into common Zambian affairs, otherwise we are going no where in Zambia.

  4. Iwe ka Efulemu
It’s exactly that bigger for crumbs mentality that got us into the mess UPND is now mopping.PF got you used to cheap things you never even worked for.You eat everything including the seeds When the owners of the money came calling, you were bankrupt
UPND has not brought poverty.Poverty is rather in your mind.Get off of your lazy behind and find something useful to do…Shaa!

  5. UPND,what exactly is the format of your primaries.A badly structured sorting process risk bringing chuff to the fore. Many of these candidates winning primaries are not popular to the general voters.HH has called for continuity.who else can continue apart from the team he so painstakingly assembled in 2021

  6. The Honorable Jack Mwimbu has run his race well as a UPND member of parliament for Monze for a long time. He has been a loyal MP for his constituency. His legacy would be better remembered if he became a mentor to someone else.
“Babondo balasigwa kababbwa.” Whenever you see that the signs to move forward are not in your favour , It is better to voluntarily let go with dignity, than to pushed out by force in humiliation.
