Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of retired Major General Vincent Mukanda as ECZ Vice Chairperson and Zevyanji Sinkala as ECZ Commissioner at State House, President Hichilema said the Commission plays a critical role in safeguarding Zambia’s democratic process.
The Head of State said Government remains committed to ensuring that the country holds credible elections, adding that peaceful elections strengthen democracy and national unity.
President Hichilema also appealed to political parties and their supporters to promote peace, love and unity during the campaign period.
He said elections should be viewed as an opportunity for citizens to choose leaders through democratic means and not through violence, hatred or misinformation.
The President further stated that Government’s commitment to the rule of law and peace since assuming office has helped attract investment into the country.
He said Zambia has recorded over US$12 billion in mining sector investments and successfully restructured its debt, reducing annual debt servicing obligations from about US$2.3 billion to approximately US$900 million.
President Hichilema added that his administration remains focused on creating a stable investment environment, expanding opportunities for young people and improving service delivery across the country.
He noted that global conflicts in the Middle East had affected economic progress but said the country had still managed to record achievements, including a reduction in the monetary policy rate which is expected to lead to lower interest rates.
Meanwhile, retired Major General Vincent Mukanda assured citizens and stakeholders that the ECZ would work to ensure that the elections are free, fair and peaceful.
He said the Commission remains open to engaging all stakeholders in the electoral process.
