President Hichilema swears in ECZ Vice Chairperson, Commissioner

President Hakainde Hichilema has sworn in Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Vice Chairperson, Vincent Mukanda and Zevwanji Sinkala as Commissioner.

Major General Mukanda replaces Mr Ali Simwinga whose tenure ended last year.

President Hichilema has also urged the two officers to ensure that the general election is peaceful and credible.

ZANIS reports that the Head of State said this during the swearing in ceremony at State House today where he also highlighted that democracy is anchored on people’s choices.

“We expect peaceful elections this year. Free fair elections,” he emphasised.

He said because of peace and stability in the country, government has recorded a turnaround in the economy through sectors such as mining, education and private sector employment among others.

The President reiterated that peace and stability are a recipe to sustainable economic development and social support that the government is implementing.

President Hichilema further noted that elections are not a competition to see who injures more people as it used to be in the past but a promotion of democracy.

“You under the leadership of the Chairperson and management, you will work with the government for the people of Zambia to deliver free, fair, credible and peaceful elections,” he said.

President Hichilema has since reminded all political parties that elections must be a competition to serve the people of Zambia and not to show hatred.

Speaking shortly after being sworn in, ECZ Vice Chairperson, Vincent Mukanda said his appointment marks a significant call to duty, and commitment to serve the people of Zambia.

Major General Mukanda (Rtd) said he will work with the renowned team at ECZ to carry out the commission’s core mandate of delivering credible elections.
