An undisclosed number of children in Namoonza area of chief Singani’s area in Choma dsitrict are said to have stopped going to school due to severe hunger ravaging the area.
This came to light yesterday when officials from a Germany non government organisation known as Kindernothilfe addressed children’s groups in the area. groups were formed by the Choma Children Development Project with a specific purpose of encouraging minors to participate in development and voice out issues affecting their rights.
On Monday this week, Choma district commissioner Laiven Apuleni attributed to delay in government distributing relief food to the just ended election campaigns and said the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit would soon deliver 300 metric tons of relief maize to the district.
But during the meeting, most children openly complained that they were too weak to walk to school while most of them said it was not possible for them to attend class on empty stomachs.
The children lamented the told Jorg Lichtenberg, the Kindernothilfe team leader for Zambia, Ethiopia and Malawi that their parents were no longer able to provide for them as the food situation in the area had gone out of hand.
The children also said they could not attend lesson in the rain season because streams become flooded. The children further bemoaned their failure to access clean and safe drinking water..
And Choma Children Development Project Coordinator, Cornwell Hademu, explained that the project will provide relevant information to enable the parents of the affected children engage relevant government institutions to attend to issues raised. Mr Hademu said the project does not give hand outs but builds capacity by promoting the concept of Self help.
Kindernothilfe is an international NGO championing the rights of children and in Zambia it is funding 15 organizations involved in the fight for children’s rights, among them child labour.
The Germany based NGO has since advocated for the establishment of an individual complaints procedure both for children and adolescents. The envisaged procedure is a monitoring instrument of the United Nations to secure respect for human rights.
ENDS/CM/PK/ZANIS.
Please RB do something about this situation. this is really sad. Many children in Zambia go without a proper meal everyday. Change should come somewhere if not from PF.
So hungry walks in Zambia, what is Rupiah Banda’s comment? Why did’nt he go there to distribute sugar? Thanks to Kindernothilfe for bringing the matter in the open.
It is the fault of their parents. They voted for RB. Eve akudya bwino!
this is wat you villages wanted. go ahead and die with yo K50 pin fertilizer.
but their also too quik to export maize yet they have no reserves for emmengecy. typical zambian leadership.agric minister should have made sure they have enough to distribute should this happen, every yr pipo go hungry its high time they came up with a tangable plan
Kaili u voted for nyama soya..u cn go ahead nw and eat him..u tink wen the urban pipo reject MMD in 3 elections its a joke..eat fertiliser kaili..u’ll c paka 2011
RB should be able to pull a brilliancy out of his very large head…or is it full of water?
Viva RB and MMD!!!!!!!!More poor people voting for you and you can’t help them. Last week I read that Permanent Secretary of Education was very proud of our education system and boasted that other African countries are copying from us on how to meet the MDG goals on education. What a shame with children failing to go to school because of MMD policies.
Where is the 39 billion rich man when help is really needed. Supporters of HH, Your man is a s bad as they come. He should have been aware of this problem and bring it out during elections. Is it that he too is only interested in the golden votes of these innocent sufferers??????????????? Ati he’s rich……..fya fye if he can not show even one Act of Random Kindness (ARK)
This is indeed a sad story. One may be tempted to blame the villagers for their pattern of voting, but politicians exploit their vulnerability with handouts which in itself is an immoral act. Poverty in the country is a real issue that the govt must deal with in terms of policy and implementation. Does the oppostion have an alternaive policy or program of action?? What are the people themselves doing about the situation, govt is sometimes without plans or focus or just does not care…
Thats an assignment for you, Mr. President.
Since MMD came in power especially during Chiluba, there has been a decline in resources allocated to the agricultre sector.
Now Soya Nyama what is your policy on agriculture and don’t tell us that you are continuing Levy’s vision. thats Bull S.
Let the villagers pay the price.I wish they had internet to see these blogs
Let the villagers die of hunger as this is te price they have to pay for putting a wrong party in power. Just die and no one will sympathise with you. The wages of sin is death. The wages of voting MMD is hunger.
Where is Munkombwe?????
SUFFER THE PRESENT, ENJOY THE FUTURE YOU KIDS
let them just die. Kabili the mealie meal and sugar they were given during campaigns have run out. You should just wait for 2011 when u will be given another bag of mealie meal and sugar.
Okey fine! These guys voted for Nyama soya. What should the govnment do abt it? Forgive them, they dont understand economics.
Yes villagers must enjoy that because they voted for a wrong party
THIS CHIEF HAD PARADED HIMSELF IN SUPPORT OF RBB, LET THEM JUST EAT RUPIAH!!!!
People people, I think we should be thinking of a solution instead of blaming the poor people for voting wrong. Yes, they will learn a lesson if at all they voted for the wrong people. But right now, we need to deliver our people from hunger, they are Zambians like all of us and God’s people too. Our government should think of mechanisms to alleviate the hunger in Southern province, say may be irrigation or other sustainable means for those people to live well.
no. 9 don’t behalf as if you are outside the country think like someone who has senses not just whollowing like a small child. lets face reality if you don’t like HH thats your problem and your jealouse will lead you to enternal hell.
no.21. i salute you, You have given a good point, instead of us wasting time on blaming who voted for who, let the govt find a solution to help our children in that area. infact Munkombwe should rush to that area becuase its near choma where he resides with his family.
munkombwe is interested only in his stomach and he openly said so, to expect him to do something about the hunger situation would be asking for too much.its indeed a sorry sight when you visit these places, its not only southern province, all rural areas are bad.Govt needs to act immediately. 44 yrs after independence pipo still wear rugs. biggest question is are we liberated? from what?
No sympathy from me, Just looking forward to knocking off to go enjoy my MOSI
If we can talk like that then i wonder where new readers in zambia will come from because you who have solutions are talking like illiterate people. think like Zambia”do unto others….” thats the golden rule, pliz love your neighbour why do you profess Christianity when you are misquoting the Bible #14 thou shall not judge
You people say you are starving and yet you are the ones still voting the govermenment in,what do you want us to do?you have always been starving and yet you tell the whole world how happy you are with the government,go on and cry,we shall see and the worst is yet to come
Hi All,
the government gave out Meali Meal, sugar, fitenge’s and t/shirts which they cannot even wash now because in the so called villages not even soap is easy to find/buy,now you are complaining why dont you tell MMD’S munkombwe your minister to help, dont go on crying to us because that was your choice
you reap what you sow,i sympathise with you but TO HELL
Let them just die who cares. Those are your benefits of not listening. Now eat RB and Munkombwe. This time RB and Munkombwe’s dogs and cats are feeding better than you full. So stop complaining and go to HELL.
It is sad it has to take a foreigner to know pipo are starving. Where is the area MP? Is he/ she part of the NCC? This are the issues they should highlight.
For the children it may not be their fault – may be some ECZ member voted on their parents beflaf for RB without them knowing.
We definately needed change – and a young man for that matter. God help us.
RB mwandi forget about the chaps after all their parents voted for u, go to mfuwe if u want
I’ve absolutely no idea what those villagers in Choma thought while voting for UPND. HH should have been honest with them. Since HH is a rich businessman surely he can afford the unaffordable milliemeal just to keep them going.RB, the supposed to be an honorable presido what are you doing about the situation? snoring! MY GOD ZAMBIANS ARE IN FOR A FIX! GOD SAVE THE CHILDREN!WHERE IS PF? WHO WILL ADVOCATE FOR THE POOR?
HFHFHIIGGJGKGGG0GGGEIPYVI MV N XXCERUTE
Oh my god! WHERE IS SATA? PF IS THE ONLY PARTY THAT IS WILLING TO SPEAK FOR THE POOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!
Children are the future RB mess up with the future and GOD will cut your dream short and soon.
Pipo, these guyz voted wisely its jst that the president in waiting(HH)didnt make it this tym around, however its NYAMA SOYAs responsibility to tak care of everyone in the country.
#32 its not HH’s responsibility but gov’t
RB, time for you to be celebrating that fake victory is not there at all. School going boys ang girls are who actually voted for in most of these rurals seat on the floors. No desks, No chalks its a shame. These are the same people you called during your rallies. RB stop being cheated by the fake followers. [PROFESSOR LUNGWANGWA]
We want to se change.
For all you saying “let them die” and “its their fault”. Let me pose this to you… the hungry children that are too hungry to concentrate in school, did they vote? are they even eligable to vote?? What happened to one zambia one nation. Shame on you!! Some of you guys even forget that in Z we all came from or have ties to one or two villages. So these people you are critising and hating may be your relis. Please don’t let the children suffer because of the decisions there parents made. Is it not possible for some wealthy company or ngo to provide a feeding scheme to schools??
It’s buy now pay later. These villagers never learn, it has been three elctions so far, but I feel sorry for the children. If there is any governament in place can they quickly move in please. These are future leaders you know and future voters. mmd you need them since you specialize in rural votes.
iyee uluse kubana?wez zed goin 2 now?
Please mwe buteko do something to that place twapapata mukwai
Children will always be innocent. The campaign gifts have run out until next elections! Could someone do something, especially the GRZ and the Veep’s office to be specific. I know there is a vacancy but life has to go on. Its not like it was a one man show.
This blog needs Jesus.
saddening indeed. what intervention measures has government put in place. Whats the disaster monitoring and satellite survey doing?
Am told they used the money to compaign for Banda. So children’s souls attorn Lupiya lwa ba Banda
This blog needs Jesus…………Yes my son what can i do for you?
pls RBB act ASAP we dont want people to die from hunger, shame on you guys,
