A Senior government officer in Western Province has appealed to the government to consider allocating more funds to road works in Western Province to compensate for long distances involved in the collection of gravel materials and the sandy terrain.
Deputy Permanent Secretary, Phanwel Chibala, made the appeal in an interview with ZANIS in Mongu today, arguing that it was difficult to find contractors to do any road works in the province because of lack of materials.
He requested that, in order to contain the situation, more funds should be allocated to road works in the province.
The DPS complained that Shangombo and Nalikwanda roads were recently advertised to contractors but unfortunately only one contractor in each case responded with very high bids, adding that Shangombo road alone went as far as K70 billion, which is beyond government budget.
Senior Road Inspector under Rural Road Unit (RRU) in Western Province, Fred Phiri, said that on average, gravel haulage in the area was about 50 km away.
However Mr. Chibala thanked government for having procured road equipment which is now under RRU to help rehabilitate feeder roads.
He said that in Western Province, the equipment has already been used to do Mwene Mutondo’s 7 km road, Limulunga-Lealui’s 18 km road and Mulambwa Basic‘s 1km connection road.
Currently some units were already in Kaoma while another unit will be sent to Kalabo district to work on Sikongo and Nalikwanda roads.
Western Province, under RRU, has five tipper trucks, four front-end loaders, two rollers, six graders and two water bulzers.

too much povery in western province.People should push these politicians to raise the standard of living that side and open economic zones there too.
Not only more money but also more people with good management skills. Money will never be enough. There is need to properly manage what is available
LET NOT EVERY STORY NOW JUST FOCUS ON WESTERN AND EASTERN PROVINCES SO MANY PLACES NEED TO BE DEVELOPED TALK OF NORTHERN PROVINCE,COPPERBEL LIKE MUFULIRA. IF WE WILL BE JUST HEARING WESTERN,EASTERN DAY IN DAY OUT PEOPLE WILL BE CONCERNED.
Forget benefits of voting wrongly you will see and enjoy poverty you villagers
You got what you voted for nice no money for you
#4 GK-Hong Kong…you are very bitter
Just get over it Money Banda won period, lets move ahead.
You should never forget that villagers do not have access to newspapers or newes in general. They depend on whatever the chiefs are telling them. Therefore their judgement in voting for the right person is decided by their chiefs and not themselves. In short the chiefs brain wash them hence you should put the blame on chiefs and not the poor villagers.
They gave you the We give you tax so choose which is P1 area
It will only take a President with a vision and good goals to overcome poverty in our country. All these politicians that we put to power are upto no good…..
Its not only Western Province with bad roads almost the whole country. We are so tired of promises from all these politicians we need someone will do less talking and act
Instead of blaming villagers someone should try and educate them the risks of choosing a wrong candidate. The time is too short to judge Money Banda, lets give him a chance….
ama labbish you westeners and your mmd mwaitaya you should also start dying of hunger then you will vote wisely in 2011 2gether with those in northwestern
The gov’t should just send camels to places like Shangombo and Nalikwanda because roads can not be built on sandy soils. That K70 Billion will be washed away by the coming rainy season, this time next year the same money will be spent on roads that get washed away. Western Province needs oil to justify building anything there otherwise it is a waste of state resources. The gov’t must utilise canals and camels as alternatives to building roads. We all know anything can be built on sand just like in the Middle East but that requires money which the country does not have.
#11 Anonymous poor analysis.Who ever is paying for you abroad is wasting money on a very dull kaponya! Most likely you are a bum cleaner!
Nyama soya has started working wise voting westerners
Western province must be joking, I agree I did get voted by the majority there however, if all those vilagers had voted for me I would not have had to rig my way up to my present position. So shut up you lot, I do not have time to think , if you see me now I want to sleep! Got it!
Okay westeners you deserve it since you voted for him,we will not complain. We hand him over to you,you can have him as your president as long as you wish.Naleka nine Zedian mu calo cabene.
AAH Ha`we`told`you to vote wisely Pa MUKOLO,bangwele lwenu mukala lya fye ba-opani for the next 3 years. God taught Adam a Lesson for disobeying so who are you not 2 be punished for voting unwisely!? For us in the ‘know’and mind u we ive above the poverty datum line @ least,Ni PABWAAATO WIN OR LOSE.
ECONOMIC RESOURCES ARE SCARCE AND SHOULD BE ECONOMICALLY ALLOCATED. PEOPLE LETS LEARN TO PRIOTISE, ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT ALL WESTERN PROVINCE NEEDS NOW IS A GOOD ROAD? WHAT IS THERE THAT IS GOING TO BENEFIT THE COUNTRY BY BUILDING GOOD ROADS THERE?
LETS LOOK FOR PRIORITIES.
So you thought those brown envelops meant well? You know what kind of gvt mmd is and you went ahead to vote for them keep on suffering and next time PF should start beating up villagers not chiluba
#12 You just can’t handle facts, you would rather believe in lies. I can reassure you nothing will stand on the sandy soils of western province. I wonder if you have even been there before? I’m not a kaponya and certainly not a bum cleaner mwaiche. Don’t insult people you don’t know!! Makaka you! Let us build roads were we can and let us find alternatives where we can not build like in some parts of western province. The truth shall set you free.
Its true that Chiefs have influence on their people. We have destroyed our own values and culture. As far as am concerned a Chief is not a Prime Minister who should demand a western life. Why do we need a tared road leading to the Palace? what economic activities take place in the Palace? I thought our Tradional leaders are supposed to point us to where we have come from when we try to get off track, supposed to show us how to keep food staffs without Fridge, how we can manage life without all that we have seen from the white.
The govt is buzy pleasing these Traditonal leaders at the expense of many important developmental programs as a result they are able to influence their pipo in any way
#12 #11. This forum is good let us respect the space. we all have different view points and i believe each has its own merit, it is not about one being right or wrong but lets try to see sense in what one is saying. First let me point out that it is possible to put up good road in western province let along in a swampy area – Road Engineering is a Science which i believe can address the geology of any land. Go to Chirundu and see what has become of Kapiringozi, the hill was eaten by the Chinese and the road is perfect! Secondly, we need raods everywhere in Zambia but western province should not be subject cos they gave Banda Votes!!!!!!
ma roads ka…
For Zambia to build roads in Western Province, we would need to have reserves of at least 3 trillion dollars annually otherwise the cost of building just one road from Mongu to Kalabo or Shangombo is not justified unless there was a sudden global demand for desert sand then may be one can justify building such roads. An alternative which was presented by PF president Sata is to build a railway line from Lusaka to Angola via Mumbwa, Kaoma and Lukulu which seems more realistic and viable for the benefit of the nation. The same can’t be said about Shangombo or Kalabo road projects. Another alternative is to wait until the year 2050 for someone to invent some flying cars.
#23 u re very funy; global demand for derset sand, invention of flying cars! Lets help our friends there. you never know one day you will find yoursef there.
You might as well start thinking of building a road now. When you start mining uranium, you might find some sandy spot there to bury toxic wastes.
so who should get a road? the one who did not vote for RB? Iyo mwandi kuli analysis! PF is the same and the Lozi’s saw through that . you cant cheat them. They know that they can count the number of times Sata has been to their province since he started dreaming of state house LESS THAN TEN TIMES since 2001 , i think. And the chiefs? dont lie about them they dont hold rallies to tell people who to vote for.
You reap what you sow. you planted MMD and you harvest poverty. Mealie meal is 75 pin in Shangombo am sure it is 100 pin.
Have you ever been to shangombo? more than three quarters of people there dont even by your so called mealie meal from shops
thats what u voted for, govt never invests were they wont gain anything, bad days are yet to come,it took many years for northwestern to be developed and reason y,the mines,so guys u will keep on voting and the best u can do is to come with ideas on how u can make your province rich
No 10, how can you write such a comment that people in Western province should start dying of hunger…how do you know they’re not already dying of hunger? My dear if you have nothing productive to say then i suggest you don’t say anything. And apparently your name is Situmbeko…now that sounds to me like a name from Western province. You’re a sell out.
I’m glad Western province voted Rupiah B instead of that tribalist called Sata, he would have put western province in a worse state than it already is.
#19 thats a poor analysis, nothing can stand in western province you say,how come there are buildings and houses then tell me
We need money in our province Western province for development
let the govt source more money for western province to repair the roads to avoid rigging the 2011 elections. We were told trucks carrying elections materials were breaking down enroute to shangombo and sikongo.Ba PF push the govt to repair these roads in western province before 2011 elctions or else mukalila nafuti.
We can’t be talkin about roads when there is much more important things that the money is needed for within the province i.e. hospitals, schools and the orphaned. Afterall one things for sure once the money gets there its going to go straight into the pockets of the govt officials.Instead of forging forward we are going backwards & thats what you get with MMD. Western province is the most under developed province in the country and i don’t think MMD is goin to change that any time soon.
Mulumele ma lozi we need equal access in terms developmt regardless of who voted for who after all they saved this nation from the snake entering state house otherwise it would have been disaster long live lozi kingdom.
#26 no chief needs to hold a rally, all he does is send a word and his people obey.
“UPND denies media reports
The UPND has dispelled media reports suggesting that the party is pondering on an electoral pact with the Patriotic Front (PF).Party Secretary General, Tiens Kahenya, said in a statement to ZNBC that his party is not contemplating entering into a pact with any political party.Mr. Kkahenya said UPND is currently conducting a post mortem of the last presidential election. He said the party is also focusing on the 2011 tripartite elections.Mr. Kahenya however, said his party will always remain committed to genuine proposals for alliances.” Source: w w w . z nbc . c o . z m / media / news / viewnews . c g i ? c a t e go r y = 8 & i d = 1226342342

All provinces need proper roads.
There is no such thing as Lozi Kingdom, Western Province has a good number of different groups and Lozis are a minority in terms of numbers. A good number of areas in Western Province are not under Lozi chiefs so one must be clear in thinking when mentioning western province. It is a shame that some people are endorsing electoral corruption just because they don’t like a particular candidate either based on past performance or just the old miguided tribalism.
Not only do all provinces need proper roads but electricity, clean running water and telecoms infrastructure. That’s the only way they will be opened up for development.
Ee-ni, all provinces need proper roads, I agree, but this time around the topic is regarding Western Province roads dear all, kindly note the topic at hand. An improvement to the road infrustructure in Western Province is welcome. Then only can development flow. Luitumetzi sha!
W/province has been neglected for too long but mean while it’s part of zambia. We westerners are not happy we demand charge RB we also want to part of national development.Other provinces have beneifted for too long.RB we shall be happy people if you seriously look into developing western province.
