Former Works and Supply Minister, Mike Mulongoti has formed a political party called the Peoples’ Party (PP).

Speaking on Radio Phoenix programme on Let the People Talk programme in Lusaka today , Mr Mulongoti said the PP would hold a convention in a few months time after funds mobilisation and massive recruitment of members.

He said the party was registered sometime back but he could not announce its formation until after some ground work was carried out on whether it would be generally accepted.

And Mr Mulongoti has asked for a simple “thank you” from the Patriotic Front (PF) claiming he used his own resources to assist the ruling party campaign prior to the 2011 general elections.

“All I am asking for is a thank you from the PF. I don’t think that is asking for too much. I used my personal resources during the campaigns,” he said.

He also said he was against the removal of former President Rupiah Banda’s immunity as it would be costly.

“You see it is very costly to remove Rupiah Banda’s immunity. The PF should first deal with the late Second Republican President Frederick Chiluba’s immunity before dealing with that of Mr Banda. Dr Chiluba’s matter of the London judgment is still pending. The money being spent on the stripping off of RB’S immunity can be channeled to improving health care, road networks and issues affecting the people,” he said.

He urged the Government to clearly examine what happened in second Republican President Dr Frederick Chiluba’s immunity removal which was still hanging.

PLEASE SPARE US TIME TO THINK OF HOW WE ARE GOING TO RESUSCITATE THE AILING ECONOMY AND THE THE HARDSHIPS OUR BELOVED BROTHERS AND SISTERS GO THROUGH EVERY DAY AT THE HANDS OF ALL POLITICIANS.

    • I think Africa is still very colonised and our leaders do not even make decisions for us. I feel the West thru IMF and the WB do, our leaders are just puppets. We can only see economic emancipation when these two leave our continent. No wonder they were quick to label our Pan-African brothers as dictators and even killing ’em. Our so called leaders have to wise up. We need freedom, not their stupid packages which come at such costs/conditions to implement their so called useless policies. Ask WB/IMF what they have been doing to our Agric sector for more than 3 decades. What? Forcing our govts to strip off sussidies while Agric sector is heavily subsidised.   11. Peoples Party – that’s my party. Lets go Mulongoti, lets go. Now do this, quickly poach all MMD members by Dec 31, and you will be very strong. The message to tell MMD members is that they need to re-invent themselves by joining PP. Who knows, come 2016 you can test the waters.

If Sata,a man with an unclear educational and family backround is President of Zambia today what can stop us all from having a shot at the Presidency,it’s easy to convince Zambians,illiterate and educated Zambians,they are all the same where politics are concerned,they can understand if you are a good speaker and can churn out some cheap rhetoric about putting more money in their pockets within 3 months !! lol

  38. This is very encouraging to democracy, so that new opposition parties can evolve because some present opposition parties have out-lived usefulness. Although my humble appeal is to set up new parties without involvement of leaders who have participated in political leadership like former presidents of parties, Ministers, PSs, former and current MPs who have served two terms before, so that we try new ideas, zeal and political excitement. After PF, or even in 2016 this is the way to go. Elias Chipimo jr has already participated too. So Mr. Molongoti give space and chance to completely new blood or brooms in politics.

I wouldnt take this man lightly at all, I knew he would be president someday the moment he publicly challenged kunda for vp. He stood his ground on principles and so pls remember this day when he becomes the next Zambian president.

These parties formed out of selfishness and frustratonnever go anywhere, look at FDD, Heritage, Magenda’s party whatever you call it and many others! Mulongoti is better off joining other parties but nobody can accept him because of his selfish attitude! Now what more the electorate?

  53. This is how Africans think it is democracy. Forming parties allover. We should have stringent qualifications for one to form a party. In Zambia one should support from 1000 members from each province, and other qualifications eg no criminal record and a police clearance, prove that one is Zambian and of Zambian parents etc. That can stop Mulongoti and others.

  57. Poor Mulongoti, still asking for a thank you from PF! They never called you to help them and with or without your so called help, they would have won the elections anyway. It is a pity that most of these people who have served in govt before think that they can only contribute to the development of the country if they are the president. Mulongoti is just a selfish man, but we should just respect his constitutional right to form a political that will have no effect on the current political scene.

  66. The problem with us Zambians especially bloggers on such networks that we refuse to be analytical about issues and tend to engage in irrelevancies. You can only ignore Mike Mulongoti at your own peril. Just look critically at our political landscape today and you will realize that the current dynamics do not allow a single political party to democratically swing a clean win in any election if such a general poll was to be held today , it will only take a coalition of political parties or strong alliances to turn the tables and win. not even the so called P.F can win alone, not after the damage they have managed to inflict on our democracy in such a short time. What Mike has simply done is create another voting block which will be critical to winning an election. Bravo you are the one.

      When you started your contribution by accusing other bloggers of being less analytical I was compelled to read yours. Well I dont find your analysis any better and here is why.
      You talk of ignoring Mike Mulongoti at ones own peril but fail to substantiate your point of view by giving any single point that is directly related to Mulongoti.Instead you go on to talk of “coalition of parties or strong alliances”. Are you implying every Jim and Jack should form a political party just so that they can add numbers to coalitions.What value have parties whose members you can count with your fingers added to coalitions in the past?Do you thinking forming so many parties adds a brick to the building of democracy in Zambia?

I dont see anything wrong with the pf sending mulongoti a thank you card. he is human too fellas so dont just dismiss that as nothing. each one of us feels special and when we help should be acknowledged for our hand no matter how small. some things are so simple and yet huge in return. laugh all you want but this guy has a plan. l maybe wrong but if i were pf i would pay attention because the mmd etc are not going to be that much of a challenge but this guy will be formidable come 2016
