Youths from the opposition MMD have jumped to the defence of party Spokesperson Dora Siliya after she came under heavy criticism for flashing her middle finger in Parliament.
MMD Die Hard Youths National Coordinator Bowman Lusambo said there is nothing insulting about Ms. Siliya’s gesture.
“There is nothing in our culture that suggests that flashing a middle finger constitutes insulting gesture, I challenge all those condemning Madam Siliya to start which part of our culture talks about the middle finger,” Mr. Lusambo said.
He accused organisations and individuals criticizing Ms. Siliya of having dirty minds and attempting to politicize the incident.
“These people are merely dirty minded and they want to pollute the entire nation, we are not interested in these issues because Zambians want development and not these types of politics,” he said.
Mr. Lusambo added that the nation should instead be focusing on forcing Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini to resign for allegedly failing to uphold integrity in the conduct of his duties.
“We should be more concerned about removing the Speaker because we have a PF cadre for a Speaker.”
On Friday, Open Society Foundation Executive Director Sunday Chanda filed a petition to the Speaker to express our annoyance over the middle finger raised by Ms. Siliya.
“In view of Chapter 12 of the Laws of Zambia and the National Assembly powers and privileges Act, the Privileges, Absences and Support Services Committee deals with cases of erring members of the House.
The National Assembly standing orders of 2005, which deal with order in the House, standing order number 70, we petition the Honourable Speaker of the House to safeguard the dignity of the House. There must be no sacred cows,” the petition letter read in part.
“As an organization that believes in the integrity and sanctity of Parliament, we have resolved to petition the Speaker of the House, which even children saw in their homes and one that has left an indelible mark on what is and is not acceptable behaviour by Parliamentarians. Parliament has a duty to repair the colossal damage ‘the middle finger’ has caused.
Parliament, through the Speaker and the Committee on Privileges, Absences and Support Services must sense the urgency of the now, to uphold the integrity of Parliament through acting decisively on the erring legislator.”
The letter continued, “This will send a message that the middle finger has never been and will never be an acceptable part of Zambia’s governance system. We wish to remind the Honourable Speaker that Ms. Siliya’s conduct was watched by Zambians of all ages, including very innocent children, potentially threatening to corrupt their morals with obscene gestures.”

If these are youth leaders then Zed as a nation we are in trouble how can one defend such an act.? Dora errored and must be condemned but looks like some chaps will do anything as long as its coming from the opposition which quite absurd..please let us criticise where necessary and support where its befitting and act as a voice for the masses
If the situation was that worth is good she showed them the middle finger. I don’t think she did that out of boredom.
Can someone deport this Tanzanian.where is Lungu when you need him.
Culture is dynamic.
If anyone on this planet thinks its ok to flash your middle finger at anyone, then I think they need a SANITY check. The Zambian or indeed any community’s culture can not be defined in the same traditional way Africa existed 200 years ago.
Ba MMD mwalakwa….vomelani cabe and say sorry your member was wrong to do what she did.
Nonsense ! Who doesn`t know what that means ? We are living in the enlightenment age, so use the meaning of it traditionally shouldn’t be an excuse. You are pathetic.
you can imagine..
and the chap spoke in english while discarding what comes with it.
Ba Zebige, muleinchindika! are there modern insults and old insults? what enlightenment age are you talking about. If you are offended that is yo problem-Lesa umwine akapingula!
Dora chipuba. This is the same woman who was busy inviting men in eastern province to touch her bottoms. She is a shame to both our women and politics.
PF uttered more insults to Mwanawasa than the Dora middle finger in Parliament. Why do you PF cadres have short memory. Very soon you will forget you are in power. Shame.
Nonsense ! Who doesn`t know what that means ? We are living in the enlightenment age, so using the meaning of it traditionally shouldn’t be an excuse. You are pathetic.
Dora is one depraved b.i.tch. Sticking out her fat middle finger in Parliament is vile and childish.
You are just a jealous woman. A princess with such language. You need a sex change cretin. If Dora erred, you need to advise how she can reform instead of insulting her.
Nubian princess, just as well , you are what your name suggests – ancient in mind and no better than Dora.
What is wrong with that? In Europe parliamentarians have fought in the house some even brandishing guns. What is a middle figure? Zambians let’s not be trivial! This RB issue has derailed national development. Let us get to work!
Dora should just apologize we understand emotions came to play. Written apology to speaker and public is required from the not so honorable MP.
PF always thinks they are right. Can one of you tell the Zambians where our beloved President is? I miss him, I have not seen anything in the media from him. Quite assuring someone from Zambia told me Dr Kaseba was on TV last night. Hon. Sakeni please comment on this to the Zambian People.
I just wonder how someone in his right mind can have the audacity to support nonsense, you are sick that’s all I can say!
but please educatesome of us,the 42-years i have livedon this earth, this is the first time i have about about this insult, tell us whats the insult, or else someof us who do not know what the insult is we will say thereis nothing insulting. its just an imaginaly…
CNP – That sign means the part between her legs and the most central fleshy labia minora
WHERE IS THIS MAN FROM? HE DOES NOT SEEM TO B ZAMBIAN. HE DEFENDS ANYTHINGS .IT SEEMS DAT ‘S THE WAY HE SURVIVES. HE IS GIVEN SOME CRUMBS BY DESE IMMORAL MMD LEADERS. LUSAMBO KNOW DAT WAT U DO AND SAY DON’T MAKE SENSE. DORA NICHINOKOLE WA MWANAKASHI.
You don’t seem Zambian yourself. What kind of Zambian writes all in capital letters? Dunderhead
Just answer the question someone has pleaded ignorance. If you do not have the answer do not insult him.
Personally i think our country needs prayers. What happened in Parliament is unacceptable I wonder how a normal thinking human being can tolerate a thing like that, now these are the people who wants to be back in power yaba…
Oh my GOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!§”$§§ What the hell or kind of those brains after Mr. kaingaot? So mmdead youths are also so stupid and I believe they have been bribed with more money to support that prostitute. I hate mmd and I´m so ashamed.
you will die with your hatred
To hell with you FOOL ***** DOG!!!!!!!
I think it is ok to acknowledge that she was annoyed and she insulted but she was within her freedoms to do so. The speaker disregarded natural justice in his push to satisfy his masters at the POST when he insisted on NOT listening to what the opposition were saying.
Matibini if you did not see Dora’s finger, I agree with her munyelo wako.
Is that how you react at your home when annoyed?
thats how he reacts..
pathetic.
Yaba! Zambians in-country, Both Dora and Matibini erred. Both should apologize to the Zambians. Let us blog sense insults do not mend they perpetuate damage.
Kikikik f..k all ya
even if you defend that bi.tch tawakamulyepo chisusu uyo.
That is Zambia for you.
That is what those 80 lunatic MPs deserve. Middle fingers on both hands
What did the others do?
they actually deserve middle fingers!
Any news on the whereabouts of the President, State House or somewhere else?
He’s dead. That ok with u?
Mmd media.
Let rubbish bin face his charges. Owners of media have kept there credentials
Imwe naimwe kodi ma insults yaenekelonkala mu dictionary ya traditional kacha? Nga ‘Nigger’ ilimo?
LT, would you please not trash my recent post? We have a pictorial image of what I am trying to say to show how repulsive Siliya’s gesture is. That is why I have the words you consider inappropriate in inverted comas.
That is fine. There is a lot relativism of norms with some people. They call evil good, and what is good is evil in their estimation.
Nevertheless, what is wrong cannot be right. If Dora’s gesture was innocent, no one here would have made an issue of it.
Why has there been no controversy over someone sitting down or standing up or smiling? This goes to say that in a multicultural world we all now live in, there is such a thing as shared culture, and we must do our best to co-exist without offending.
You will not take kindly if someone raised their middle finger at you on the streets, unless that was the only finger on their palm, right?
I have contributed to the point that others are attempting to make here about Dora’s behaviour. If Kaponya is a negative word, Dora is one…
You dull to condemn Dora when you you don’t say anything about how all these pf people behave including yourself you pig grow up a be fair not being *****ic like pf
Wat is blowjob lusambo tryin 2 say
genius of rubbish!
she use that finger in different ways………………….
I don’t see anything wrong with Siliya. HONESTLY, what is wrong you traditionalists.
Be real
you.
It isn’t the work of the speaker to interprete the law but the judiciary
Alelya nabo
Me I am proud of what Dora did. The speaker and MPs deserved the finger. If you are not happy with what she did, then I have this message for you. Up Yours too!
you have had one too many..
retire now… please!
Dora alibe nzeru , manyazi ku eastern province.

ndiwe chindere cha nadi nadi!!!! chihende!!!
there is something fundamentally wrong with supporting things u know to be wrong. Wake up and be counted youths. We are know the gesture of a middle finger is an insult. Let us be real!!!
it is used where it is supposed to. the situation deserved it, infact one was not enough, she needed to put up TWO!!!
I fail to understand when one speaks about culture in general in general norms, and thinks what is permissible in one culture is also entertained in another. Culture is dynamic: don’t involve other cultures in issues such as these if your mind is thin. If in my culture, a particular word means well, the same well could be an insult in next culture and language. I think Lusambo has a very thin mind and I wonder his level of studies, interaction with people of different culture. I am also very much concerned about interpretations of particular gestures in relation with the issue at hand. I am happy though that if the raising of a figure in the manner Siliya did is not an insult in Lusambo’s culture, – his culture I believe is not universal such that he can draw to believe him and vice…
Can Americano un principled Sunday Chanda the PF/Vuvuzela “Useful *****” bring the innocent young Zambian children who know what raising the ‘middle finger’ mean? The Bible says”To the pure in mind/heart all things are pure.Only to the dirty in mind and heart like Sunday Chanda,it means bad thing.
In Africa middle finger means : not happy with the speaker.
let some one flash the middle finger at Lusambo’s mother and see how he takes it.
You mean your mother?
Would Lusambo’s mother know what the middle finger means?
The situation deserved 80 Middle fingers! Leave Dora alone!!!
You must be her Son mwana wamu chigololo you are also using David Beckham same person, silly cow.
Its parliament everything goes…or it should go…except physical fighting…all world parliaments are NOT civilized…and yes it should go un punished!
Simple solution. If they see nothing wrong with it then make it the new party logo. Wear those tee shirts with pride and give every child one. To others, of course it will be a symbol of disgraceful behaviour but what do we know…

You use the lil finger to pick ya nose, the next finger for a marriage ring, the other finger is for pointing, the thumb is for flippin pages and the middle finger is for …well, poking Dora’s thick head.
Listern imew ba MMD. Culture is dynamic. A white wedding has now become culture. Driving a car har become a culture. Layinng wreths on tomb has become our culture. You people are streghthenin PF by your conduct. You are faillig to offer constructive opposition.
The few individuals that approve of that gesture in this chritian nation are a handfull upnd members including HH and a few mmd members including Nevers Mumber. How does that feel since you say the gesture is innocent.
Its so disappointing the people just decide to jump on the band wagon of condemnation for things whose origin and true meaning they do not know. if you ask all the bloggers here who are condemning dora what the origin of the middle finger gesture is, i can guarantee you that not one knows the answer.
so let me give you the knowledge,,,, free of charge:
so during the era of the celtic warriors in europe, it was common practice to cut of the middle finger of the dominant hand of captives. the rational being that, this was the finger used in pulling the string to shoot the arrow and this would make the warrior useless, no need to kill him. so in the event that a captive escaped before this was done, he would before riding away into the woods turn towards his captors and show them the…
Language and culture evolve. There original meanings become obsolete over time as new meanings gain acceptance.Google started as a company but its become a verb and WTF is becoming wot da faq.Let me end here with internet lingo….like…NKT.
Its so disappointing the people just decide to jump on the band wagon of condemnation for things whose origin and true meaning they do not know. if you ask all the bloggers here who are condemning dora what the origin of the middle finger gesture is, i can guarantee you that not even one of the knows.
so let me educate you a bit. so during the era of the celtic warriors in europe, it was common practice to cut of the middle finger of the dominant hand of captives. the rational being that, this was the finger used in pulling the string to shoot the arrow and this would make the warrior useless, no need to kill him. so in the event that a captive escaped before this was done, he would before riding away into the woods turn towards his captors and show them the middle finger
It’s 2013. That raised middle finger has a pretty universal meaning which is derogatory. An insult is a derogatory comment or action. I can bet you anything there was no Celtic kindred historical or even alternative tradition at play. Whether one believes it was deserved or not is down to individual preference but lying about it won’t erase the action and exposes one’s character. The person in question would not make the same gesture on the streets, at home, to a child or at the press conference where she explains the act. I will give her that much and no more.
in other words a symbol of defiance and taunting the captors that wooo i still have my middle finger and i will come back to fight another day. so what was dora saying here? she was saying to the gutless matibini: wooo, we will come back to fight another day.
that’s all there is to it nothing immoral in this except that mmembe says that it is. boy! how this chap has twisted the whole country around his finger is
( grudgingly saying this )pure genius on his part
Chilombo, you are equally ignorant. Allow me to correct you. he middle finger originated in Ancient Greece, where the gesture was used as a symbol of anal intercourse in a manner meant to degrade, intimidate and threaten the individual receiving the gesture.[2] It also represented the phallus, with the fingers next to the middle finger representing testicles;
@38 Only H.H. and Neva.s would approve such out of desperation. GO and geture your sister that symbol. OR better still miidle finger KAI.NGU and R.B and Dola and yourself
Sweet Dora.Not Dola please!PF iskuru!
If you are a youth please dont listern to these morally banrupt skunks.
Is culture written somewhere? Does this man understand wat culture is?
Ba PF you amaze me! Why are you insulting Dora if you are morally upright yourselves?
Zambian politics needs ethics…
If that middle fingure was meant for the likes of Nalumambwa ,Masumbwa ,Winter and Matibini, well done sweet Dora.If anything stick out to them when RB gets an aquital!
This is unnecessary acrimony. Why cause a storm in a tea cup? I meant to raise the MMD symbol which you all know is the index finger but unfortunately I raised the immediate next finger. It was not intentional, these things can be confusing but I don’t regret. Thank you.
Hon. Samuel Chinyama Mbilishi from Zambezi constituency once said “WAZA WENU” in parliament and only Sikota Wina heard got the meaning coz he spoke some luvale. but nothing happened to him till his death anyway…so whats the fuse over midle finger
Dora go defende RB who was eating your private parts with a small p na s
YOU ARE CURSING YOURSELF FOOLISH ONE. RESPECT EVERY WOMAN AS YOUR MOTHER AND EVERY ELDER MAN AS YOUR FATHER.
In our zambian culture and in our zambia legal framework, raisin the middle finger is NOT an INSULT. lets not behave like we are more american or british than the americans or britons themselves. Matibini will embarass himself if dares act on some stupid petition. this is the more reason that siusiku guy from finance was not prosecuted because he said the truth.
MMD Die Hard Youths National Coordinator Bowman Lusambo is a Moran!
Whether it is an American or British thing to raise the finger, the point is that it is a derogatory gesture meaning ‘up yours’. Dora meant to use it that way because she knows its meaning. It doesn’t matter that she is from a ‘different culture’. It is amazing that some people are so quick to rush to her defence. Just because you don’t know its meaning doesn’t make it less of an insult for the person using it.
Forget the politics, culture or whatever, if anyone on this planet thinks its ok to flash your middle finger at anyone, then I think they need a SANITY check.
Any body with sign language knowledge please help interpret the raising of finger.Am getting assumptions here. Dora, save yourself you may know the meaning better after all.
Ladies and gentlemen in us much as we have the privilege to blog, lets be critical in an acceptable and not being defencive for its sake.
Truthfully speaking, who doesn’t know that is an insult coz even ambuya from mangango is aware of that being an insult. Now,if our national leaders are the ones exhibiting such an unacceptable behaviour then we are doomed as Zambia atlarge.
This is totally unacceptable if anything the speaker exercised lenience in dealing with the matter because this is a straight forward case without any justification.
Plz Dora you are such unprofessional leader without vision!USELESS YOU ARE DORA AND THE PEOPLE WHO ARE IN YOUR SUPPORT!!
i REST MY CASE!
Now can someone tell me the specific commandment among the 10 God given commandements Dora broke by gesturing like that? I think we need to fear God instead of man. We can respect man yes, but its God who we need to fear and give glory. God gave us the 10 Commandments to live by, and you human beings obviously being used by the devil come with some finger raising commandment which when a person uses, you call it an insult (and it becomes) a sinful thing? no ways. Stick to what the bible says and don’t go feeling offended of something which really has no known meaning. This is wasting time and space. Red me all you like. If Dora’s mind she did that as an insult, then its her who will suffer the consequences alone. Otherwise learn to ignore things which do not even make sense.
You are simply dull.
To those supporting Dora’s insulting gesture if a child flashes that middle finger on you, we don’t want to hear that you got annoyed with that.
For you own information that was an insult- I am challenging the so called MMD Youth die hard and the ones supporting Dora’s gesture to be raising the same finger to the youths he leads (if any) and see the reaction you will get. I am sure that will give you real meaning of this unchristian gesture
