A Civil Society Organization has hailed environmental experts for exposing the Zambeef hazardous meat products being offloaded on the market.

Social Action for Development (SAFD ) Executive Secretary John Mwandapole says the development is a clear indication of reduced corruption by public servants in the country.

Mr. Mwandapole says his organization has therefore commended government for its strides made in reducing corruption as evidenced by this action.

ZANIS reports that the SAFD Executive Secretary said this in an interview in Lusaka, today.

Mr. Mwendapole added that that it was a shame that a reputable company such as Zambeef could betray the support and trust of Zambians due to cooperate greediness.

He noted that one is left to wonder for how long this scam has been going on since Zambeef has been in market for a long time and called on Zambeef management to own up to its responsibility and resign.

He said it is insulting to Zambians for the Zambeef management to disregard findings by Zambian experts and opt to forward samples to foreign countries for further examinations.

“It is the highest degree of arrogance for a suspect of a crime in this case Zambeef to want to champion the course of validating or not, the scientific findings and therefore Zambeef should leave that responsibility to experts,” Mr. Mwendapole said.

Mr. Mwendapole further called on law enforcement agents to pursue criminal charges against Zambeef management and that they should not be intimidated but observe professionalism.

He has implored the people of Zambia not to take lightly to this issue saying consuming contaminated food products has adverse effects on health especially for people infected with the HIV/AIDS virus.

He called on government to remain vigilant and ensure that unsuspecting citizens are not unnecessarily exposed to hazardous products, which could further complicate the immune system of people living with AIDS.

A scam was unearthed recently where it was alleged that Zambeef imported meat products contained a harmful chemical called Aldehyde which is used for embalming dead bodies, a situation which sparked concern among Zambians.

This led to government instituting investigations in the matter with Zambeef withdrawing the alleged contaminated meat products from the market.

This was after the Lusaka City Council health inspectors yesterday discovered the presence of aromatic aldehydes in the beef Zambeef Plc imports from the United Kingdom into Zambia.

According to the local media, Zambeef imports beef products, which mainly include hooves, livers, tripe for sale to Zambians in its many outlets countrywide.

Sources within Zambeef disclosed that the hooves, livers and tripe Zambeef imports are obtained from the UK for almost nothing because they are normally disposed of as waste as no human beings consume them in Britain and that Zambeef makes huge profits out of “these waste products”.

Zambeef also exports beef from Zambia to other countries.

Aromatic aldehydes are organic chemical compounds that contain a carbon hydroxide radical or group and are used as precursor chemicals in the pharmaceutical and plastics industries.

  1. for how long are you going tp pursue these killers?
just act now and save the unsuspecting consumers out there who are still buying these condenmed meat at give away prices from being contaminated.
by the way, why has zambeef suddenly reduced their products to as low as K10 per kilo throughout their outlets? food for thought.
    the guilt are afraid indeed.

    • It is a shame that some people are riding on the limited knowledge of the general public to pull down ZAMBEEF. Formaldehyde is a know carcinogen at high doses of exposure and this seen in workers who are workers as anatomists or those who work in funeral houses. The truth of the matter is that even in these groups there is limited data to support this. Nevertheless, the general public should know that traces of Formaldehyde is found in their homes too especially those which are poorly ventilated and cars are not exception to this fact. It is the high dose which is a problem and this chemical is absorbed through the skin. Please give facts, can someone please educate the people.

  2. It would be prudent and safe for meat consumers if all Zambeef meat outlets were immediately and temporarily closed until all their stocked meat is checkd for safety by the relevant government authorities.
As for me, no more beef from Zambeef, until futher notice! That fellow, Grogan, was just too arrogant and showed just how little he (and his company) cares for Zambians’ health!

  3. Surely this is very unacceptable. Well the challenge is that it seems precolonialism seems to have given most people a slave mentality a true description of the thinking pattern of the zambeef management. I would urge an urgent closure by GRZ of the whole ZAMBEEF, they surely do not deserve to operate in any of the Zambian Markets.Let all Zambians refuse to accept any mediocrity associated with this!

  4. Ignorance! So what did ZAMBEEF wrong? Are you all pretending aldehydes are not safe or you are simply ignorant?

    • The fact that we are supposed to exporting meat to EU market and not importing makes everyone worried except yourself. The ka mamuzungu found it cheap to pick up remains of meat from dustbins and sale them in Zambia. You remember what these chaps said over Zimbabwe? someone asked why Zimbabwe was exporting beef and the white chaps said Zimbabweans eat bones. This same issue where this Zambeef chap saw these holves, condemned livers and said Zambians eat this and picked from the waste bins to feed Zambian. All is happening under now. Arrest the chap and hung him until pronounced dead.

    • @Kay, why don’t you take the aldehydes as “tea” yourself if don’t think this stuff isn’t so dangerous? After all, you will be saving your relatives some money when you die, NO NEED to spend anything embalming your @ss!!!!

Better still, let your children ejoy the stuff as “cool aid”! My goodness, what scumbag!!

  6. I now understand why people from other countries are calling Zambians a bunch of ignorant stupid idiots. Do you still believe and have faith in the post newspaper? These ignorant idiots are failing to read between the lines that there is no evidence in what was reported that Zambeef is using dangerous chemicals used to embalm dead bodies. Zambians are no longer thinking but has allowed the post newspaper to continue spinning and manipulating their ignorant minds. The newspaper managed in 2011 to convince Zambians to vote for a kaponya president. Zambeef is going to benefit big time from this story when newspaper is sued together their fake health inspectors. The dictator wants to pull everyone down for his benefit. Watch the space.

  7. The Zambeef saga is denger to human populations. Below is the long term effects. Carcinogenic. What the manager said is insulting to the learned professionals in Zambian. As a food s manager is evil. the chemical can long term. see below

The primary acute effect of inhalation exposure to acetaldehyde is irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract in humans. At higher exposure levels, erythema, coughing, pulmonary edema, and necrosis may also occur. (1)
Acute inhalation of acetaldehyde resulted in a depressed respiratory rate and elevated blood pressure in experimental animals. (1)
Tests involving acute exposure of rats, rabbits, and hamsters have demonstrated acetaldehyde to have low acute toxicity from inhalation and moderate acute toxicity from oral or dermal exposure.

  8. We protest guys, we cant live this to the goverment.its like this muzungu think, this
Colonial rule were they use to mistreat us

  9. Close all Zambeef outlets! Civil society and consumer organisations must embark on a country wide awareness campaign to alert people of this danger and institute a boycott of zambeef outlets.

JERUSALEM, January 31, 2013, (LifeSiteNews.com) – After a series of back and forth accusations and denials among government agencies, the Israeli Health Ministry has for the first time acknowledged that it has been injecting Ethiopian immigrants who are religiously Jewish with the dangerous contraceptive Depo-Provera without their consent.

The allegation that the women were coerced into accepting the shot was denied at first by both the Joint Distribution Committee, which runs the clinics at the transit camps, and by the Health Ministry. The practice has been said to be going on for years.

Ethiopian Jews accounted for 57 percent of Depo-Provera users in Israel, although they constitute a miniscule percentage of the population.
