Opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) faction has backed calls for the opposition political parties in the country to form one political party that will be able to provide effective checks and balances to the Patriotic Front (PF) government.
Faction Spokesperson Bernard Mpundu says the current situation where there are too many opposition political voices in country providing checks and balances is as bad as shouting in the wilderness.
He said that the opposition voice is too fragmented to give credible checks and balances to the government.
Mr. Mpundu said the opposition political parties in the country should emulate how the opposition political parties in Kenya came together to form alliances leading to one opposition grouping winning the presidential elections.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mpundu has expressed happiness that some senior leaders in the MMD hierarchy have allegedly endorsed calls for the MMD to host a national convention which should elect a new leadership of the party.
Mr. Mpundu has maintained that under Dr. Nevers Mumba’s leadership, the former ruling party is headed nowhere as far as getting back to power is concerned.

…and you know, i remember going into 2011 elections. HH saying no one single opposition can beat the MMD at elections. There is a need to unite. So PF and UPND started cooking somekind of joint bid. It lamentably failed and the PF won the election single handedly with the people’s support. How can Nevers Mumba, HH, Nawakwi, Milupi, Bwalya and Miyanda come together to form one Opposition Party? It is simply practically impossible!! Very few of these people in opposition have a heart for developing Zambia as the PF team has. Most of them just want to be presidents that is all…!
that one opposition party or whatever you call it can only work if HH can be secretary general and Nevers Mumba treasurer, i can assure this time around that pact can work, but provided those two are in the position stated above if not forget it.

With this kind of thinking and what mpundu is saying for real mmd is finished.The problem is not Nevers,its way the opposition is being treated.Bene kachingwe, namugala,sata,post membe have managed to destroy mmd.I thought mutati would be the best to lead mmd but no he is another pf puppet.I think there should wait for 2016 maybe maybe God will show them another leader but now to merger with the opposition is a good idea.

That is wishful thinking, but on the other hand it is good to think in those lines. Zambian politicians are too power hungry and witch hunters hence they cannot work together. Look at what happened to UPND, when Mazoka died, we all thought Saki and Chisanga would get to the helm and only to see a HH coming on the scene from the blues. The others who thought they were better, left and formed their own political parties. Everyone who has been a minister before is likely to form a political party so he can be president. No wonder MMD kept bouncing back into power and we should expect this trend to continue under the PF. The opposition in Zambia have really nothing to form as they are disillusioned and lack focus!
Thanks for admitting your inadequacies as individual political parties. I support your quest for a formidable united opposition party. But I sympathise with you since that opposition party will lack a leader to captain it to victory. Seemingly all opposition leaders are too weak to lead a formidable party. They lack Sata’s stamina. Any way dream on.

In Zambia as long as others have the money they will demean the other parties. We know of parties who have formed endless alliances with other parties and all end up with nothing. They always think because PF did it alone they equally think they can do it without any alliance. Please note, all Alliances try after 2016 when you learn your lessons.

I don’t know how these political geniuses think, have they considered the fall out if they only managed to win 5 seats under the alliance? They are busy accusing the PF of trying to form a one party government,when themselves are pushing for the abandonment of plural politics. One opposition party is a recipe for a one party state! If they lose the elections what will happen to the different political parties? In a real democracy, checks and balances are offered in parliament not in the newspapers and radio stations. Political parties with no representation in parliament or council level are not even considered opposition in politics, they are just considered political organisations. MMD should just get rid of the UNIP invaders and bring in genuine quality MMD leaders not NEVERS!
While in theory the idea is well and good, the problem is not a lack of opposition unity. The problem is the lack of political strategy and issue-based focus. Leaders are busy addressing personal weaknesses instead of addressing the political and social needs of the people, as well as mindset re-orientation.
The problem with Zambians in general is that if someone makes millions selling tomatoes, everyone wants to sell tomatoes and forget onions and other things. People seem to think that they can use the same tactics (including the stupid ones of insulting leaders) and win, forgetting that at the time PF was in opposition there was a different dynamic going on. Opposition, please try to think like intellectuals familiar with the scientific method. Study the country and the people continuously, and familiarize with the changes in the dynamics, then come up with solutions and issues that have potential, and argue them out maturely, and I am sure people who want to see good in our country will be on your side. If the purpose of opposition is just to displace the ruling party then its shallow.
This message is directed to all those who believe in the MMD led by Dr Nevers Mumba and not those who are working against Dr Mumba.Success begins with determination and belief of something you want to achieve no matter what obstacles are there.currently MMD have a hundred percent chance of getting back into power but unfortunately there are people that the PF are using to make sure Dr Mumba doesn’t have a following and are using selfish people within the MMD.I admonish those people who are strong supporters of MMD under Dr mumba to Start mobilizing resources and plan how they can reach the millions supporters of MMD in the country to continue relaying on the Party for a come back.2016 is very near and there is need for practical drive to convince the voters that its possible to come back.
