Zambia today joined the rest of the world in commemorating 60 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day.

Speaking in Lusaka today at a Symposium held in commemoration of the Human Rights Day and 60 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Human Rights Commission Pixie Yangailo called upon government to do everything within its means to provide for the domestication of the major international instruments.

Mrs. Yangailo said a lot still remains to be done before the country can be satisfied that an environment conducive to the promotion and protection of human rights is realized.

She observed that the Zambian constitution does not enshrine many of the rights recognized in the known international human rights instruments and treaties.

“While by adoption of the standards Zambia has underlined its commitment to the protection of human rights, none of the instruments has been domesticated to date to further guarantee that she would remain faithful to the purposes of the instruments,” said Mrs. Yangailo.

She revealed that the Human Rights Commission Report of 2007 on the state of Human Rights in Zambia indicated that majority of the people in Zambia are not aware of their rights recognized in the United Declaration of Human Rights and other International treaties.

Vice President George Kunda challenged the Human Rights Commission to work together with the Ministry of Justice to ensure the enactment of the Human Rights Act in the country.

Mr. Kunda said the enactment of the Human Rights Act will help the country address some of the many human rights issues affecting the people of Zambia.

Mr. Kunda, who is also Justice Minister, said it is advisable that the Human Rights Commission work closely with the Ministry of Justice to protect and promote human rights in the country through the enactment of the Human Rights Act.

He said Zambia is a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council and values its participation in events associated with the subject of human rights.

He noted that to demonstrate its commitment to the fundamental freedoms and rights of the Zambian citizens,  government has allowed the establishment of various organizations and other statutory bodies that promote and protect human rights for the Zambian people.

Mr. Kunda ,however, said Zambia’s efforts to realize the human rights goals are impacted negatively by some global trends such as high food prices, natural disasters and climate change among others.

“These global factors have an impact on the citizenry’s enjoyment of human rights, sadly they are beyond government’s control,” said Mr. Kunda.

The Vice President however noted that government is working in cooperation and in line with international guiding principles and treaties to mitigate global negative impacts.

Mr. Kunda said as the country joins the rest of the world in celebrating 60 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights day, there is need for every one to commit themselves as holders, protectors and defenders of human dignity, equality and fairness.

Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon in his message on Human Rights day said it is his hope that the world will act with a collective responsibility to uphold the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration.

Mr. Ki-Moon said the world can only honour the towering vision of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights document when its principles are fully applied everywhere for every one.

He pointed out that rights and especially their violation must hold the whole world in solidarity.

  1. Very sad if this is the case. I do agree that a marjority of Zambians are taken for a ride. Look at Zain honestly, people should now stop buying from these worthless so called investors!
PS: I used wonder why people enjoy the top spot….lelo nankala ko 1st.

  2. the peoples ignorance works to the politicians advantage, unfortunately even those that are supposed to educate the people have fallen prey to corruption,i think our nation is the most ignorant in terms of rights. the phrase “well what you dont know wont hurt you” is being applied.

  3. Sony eric..yes you do have the right to communicate to relevant authorities even if its demonstartion but has to be peaceful you know…considering law and order

  4. Zambians know their rights very well but because they are cowards and sleepy, other people take advantage of them. Already the IG is threatening those who want to protest over rising prices but its their right.

  5. Even if Zambians knew their rights, the political environment does not permit the full utilization of rights. Its a sad state of affairs.

  6. ‘She revealed that the Human Rights Commission Report of 2007 on the state of Human Rights in Zambia indicated that majority of the people in Zambia are not aware of their rights recognized in the United Declaration of Human Rights and other International treaties’ is very interesting reading.

So what shall we do then? Shall we leave this mammoth task to GRZ alone to solve it? Shall we who have known something make sure that we tell the next person about their rights?

The best is to tell all your relatives and friends about their humans rights wherever they are and whenever you talk to them by phione, email, fax or personal visits in my opinion.

  7. #9 Rashid some people have no idea what rights are.in some ccountries you can take the govt to court for depriving you infor i.e if they dont give you the right infor regarding a matter and you make a wrong decision because of that. in Zed infor is not circulated. actually even the police force doesnt know the human rights thats why they abuse inmates and getaway with it.a minister can choose to divert money for particular projects no one questions.all this is due to lack of infor.

  8. Zambia should not adopt all human rights out there in the West, please. Some are pure madness. In the UK, they now want to start teaching sex education to 5 year olds in school. Generally in the West, Women have the right to abort babies but those babies have no right to chose to live. In the UK, it is now legal to mix human and animal embroys in scientific experiments. Homosexuals and lesbians have the right to adopt children just like normal families. Same sex marriages want to enjoy full rights like normal marriages. Some countries have legalised assisted suicide in hospitals. There are crazy human rights out there.

  9. Yes zambians dont know about there rights. today they are complaining that Zain has scrapoed the 1000 pin product whatever it is and they want RB to act. What they dont know is that they have the right to move to MTN or CELL Z. Imagine chaps dont know that they have a right to choose which Sim Card to buy. then what rights do they know.

  10. #11 the govt has a dept which deals with these affairs, they get funding for that.therefor its their duty to fulfil.NGO took advantage as it is a way to get the govt to realise the shortfalls but our govt has other priorities as you know.

  11. #13, i agree with you. Its not only people who are not educated that do not know their rights, its also true that educated people are ignorant…. In fact, many are ignorant.

  12. #1 I agree. #9 Rashid Jones, watch your mouth bro. Just because we Zambians are not as hot-headed as you arabs are does’nt mean we’re sleepy and cowardly. We are simply meek and lowly, like the Israelites. And The God of Israel is our only strength and redeemer, not the HRC. Kapiert?!

  13. By the way, the concept of Human Rights must be looke at from a broader perspective, Starting with those who break the Electrol laws of our country.

  14. #14 i think culture also has a role to play in choosing what rights should be adopted in a culture enviroment and a vote can be done to make it clear what the pipo of the land will include, but i thin the major rights that affect us dat to day such as right of infor ,edu, health, family, should be taught in schools.

  15. Zambians enjoy unparralled human rights compared to citizens of most countries. In Zambia you can move about even past midnight without harrasment from the cops, You can drink beer even in the centre of cairo road without harrasment. This is the only country where you can call the head of state all sorts of names in public without harrasment. You can owe as many people as you can without being declared bankrupt. You can be hiv positive and infect as many people as you can without any sunctions. This is a country where you can bare all except the private parts and you will still get away with it. You can have as much horizontal refreshments as you can afford without contravening the penal code

  16. What about freedom of speech?when petersen released his album he was banned from performing so? did he mention any person’s name in particular? His songs can be applied to anyone, e.g CEO and his juniors, petty theives, thugs, gun thieves, even though yes it was directed to politicians how come they were the most upset about it? even the late LPM (M.H.S.R.I.P) he himself being a lawyer condoned this so how can people know their rights if even information given in satirical form is not allowed if its about the government. Pliz lets not be hypocrites!

  17. GOLYATI…..CAREFUL.HAVENT YOU HEARD THAT YOU CAN GO TO PRISON FOR DELIBERATELY INFECTING OTHER PERSONS WITH HIV????????

  18. Nine Chale, then stop complaining. The president is ruling Zambia at will. whatever he say and do, no one can oppose and you expect to develop like that. Right now who cares what Lundani is doing or where he is? people are just geting on with their business without caring.

  19. #25 golyati you are dreaming when you say “This is the only country where you can call the head of state all sorts of names in public without harrasment.” 8-x

  20. #25 what about the Kalaki case..? Or Sata’s case of “insulting the president”? When I tell people we have that as a charge in Zed they really laugh about it

  21. IF TETA DOES NOT KNOW THAT HE HAS A RIGHT NOT TO JUMP AND CELEBRATE WHENEVER THE PRESIDENT’S PLANE LEAVES LUSAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AND IF MAGANDE DOES NOT KNOW THAT HE HAS A RIGHT TO COMMUNICATE TO ZAMBIANS THAT HE WAS FIRED FOR CHALLENGING THE PRESIDENT FOR THE TOP MMD POSITION, WHO ARE WE AND MOST OF THE VOTING VILLAGERS TO KNOW OUR RIGHTS. THIS IS A NON-STARTER WAKE UP CALL BA YANGAILO. ANYWAY BENEFIT OF DOUBT THAT YOU ARE MERELY FULFILLING YOUR WORK BY COMMENTING ON WORLD RIGHTS COMMEMORATION DAY.

  22. 25 GOLYATI
YOU ARE NOW NEARING THE BORDERLINE BETWEEN NORMAL AND MADNESS. WHAT YOU ARE SAYING BORDERS ON UBUSHILU NANGU UKUPUKUTA.

  23. HUMAN RIGHTSSSSS!!!!!LOOK AT THIS TETA WAS THREATENING THE N/WEST AND EASTERNERS THAT THEY LL BE WHIPPED FAILURER TO VOTE FOR HIS RB.HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION SHOULD START WITH PEOPLE LIKE TETA WHO DOESNT KNOW THAT PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO VOTE 4 A LEADER OF THEIR CHOICE

  25. The problem of ignorance & the abuse of human rights is a problem that is what kills the growth & prosperity of our beloved African continent as a whole. Our leaders are very aware that the more people know of their rights the less their grip on oppressive powers.

  26. Every Zambian potentially must be enjoying the fundamental rights and freedoms. I call upon all enlightened Zambians to do whatever it takes to educate the unfortunate friends and relative who by virtue of their remoteness and lack of exposure have little or no knowledge of their freedoms and human rights. The fundamental rights that should be enjoyed by every Zambia are access to information, education and health. If employed thoroughly these must bring with them rights to decent clothing, housing and food. Please let us know our rights.

  27. #35 rashid u r free to leave i can see u r not interesed but i understand becoz we know u middle easterners don’t have human rights in your vocabulary!

abena zed we should differentiate between knowing human rights and and respecting human rights. Its these teta n friends who know human rights but have no respect for them and they prey on the ones who know little about their rights.

  28. You guys that are exposed to the truth must go home and change zambia for the better. We should continue to allow old men and women to preside over our affairs wrongly, What shall we tell our grand children?

  29. Hey, amazing i even forgot that even in Zambia we have the human rights commission. This is also one of those institutions that are remote controlled by the government. What rights are they talking about, they dont even voice against this government which is infringeing on our rights. When you want to exercise your rights, even ministers who are not even supposed to speak, come out to issue threats. Mpombo,Mulongoti and Shikapwasha think they own our lives.ECZ,ACC,the Judiciary and this one making noise here, these are institutions that dont work independently.

  30. As long as we dont act, we shall lways complain. Remember we are responsible for our own deeds. In fact, most of our people knows their rights, its just that we are cowards!!!! ^:)^

  31. #45

I totally agree with you. Especially Rashid, he is the most confused blogger on LT. My instincts tell me he is a coloured chap. You know what i mean….

  32. Sarah jones, i only hope you are not Baby C. its like you are a pretender. I like people who are down to earth and i think you are not. Human rights cant work in your favour if you are a coward and sleepy. Look at M’membe

  33. If you dont educate your self, dont think that HH is gonna come and pump data in yo head, is just another Zambian. Dont Argue please!!!!!!!!!!!! 8->

  34. #42,iwe Chi Rashid Jones.I told you never to comment on issue concerning us Zambians.Because you have no respect for us. How do you say that Zambians are sleepy. You should be commenting on issues to do with your country oke. Your mouth is full of fithy,i cant stand your breathe. We chinangwa, you dunderhead, can you desappear and leave us in peace.Stinking creature!

  35. #23 Supergal. You are right, culture is key.

My hope is that people would put certain human rights into cultural context so that we do not adopt rights that are not suitable for our culture.

The other thing is that human rights devised by human beings change with time and culture. Meaning, what is not acceptable today may be so tomorrow. Erosion of morals in certain societies has given birth to some human rights that their fathers never demanded. Some of cultures today are simply corrupt vesrions of yesterday’s descent cultures.

  36. #51 Rashid

indeed you are a full!! just because we ve got the same flags doesnt mean we are one!!! hmmmmmm!!! which primary school did you go to?????

  37. Chewe, Mwaiseni ba mudala. its like namwikuta ifyumbu bamudala, you need exposure, therefore i direct Sarah Jones to expose you and make you understand issues. I believe Muli Bayesu and that prevent me from insulting, so i forgive you like the way i want FTJ to forgiven by Zambians. GOD bless you my brother in Christ.

  38. This is the only country where a tabloid can continously insult an acting President for two months without repurcussion. This is the only country where freedom of speech is un restrained to an extent of having an opposition leader insult a sitting president without any repurcussions. This is the only country where a former head of state can be called a rat in a tabloid.

  39. # 55 UK-ZED THATS IS WHY THEY HAVE A PROBLEM IN THE US AS THE SAME RIGHTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED IN ALL THE STATES. BUT WHAT I THINK IS THE NATION CAN VOTE ON HOW FAR THINGS SHOULD BE TAKEN….I.E WE HAVE A TENDERNCY TO ALOW KIDS TO DO ACCEPTED THINGS AND SAY ITS ENGLISH MANNERS,HALLO…AFTER TRAVELLING I LEARNT THAT EVEN THE ENGLISH DONT CONDON MOST OF THE THINGS WE THINK BAZUNGU DO THEY ALSO HAVE MORAL VALUES.I WAS SUPRISED THAT EVEN IN DEVELPOED COUNTRIES ITS NOT EASY TO COMEOUT OPENLY THAT ONE IS GAY THEY ARE HEAVILY DISCRIMINATED AGAINST.SO I THINK THERE IS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THESE ISSUES CAREFULLY.THAT GOES ALSO FOR DRESS CODE PIPO THINK THEY CAN WARE WHAT BIYONCE WARES ON STAGE TO WORK HAHA

  40. Sony Ericcson 2-band radio
On this very blogg you have called the head of state names such as Nyama Soya, Shriek, tombolilo, toadpole AND the late was often called chuchuchu, cabbage , vegetable and chipumputu.

Non of you were harassed. Some of you even called the honorable Masebo ati hule. What more freedom of expression do you want.
Some have even dared to call me Mad…

  41. you people why do you want these rights so much when you cant use them for the benefit of Zambia? Human rights or no human rights, Zambia will remain the same coz you are all peaceful as Chewe puts it.

  42. When a country is faced with so many problem where its people do not have much of a choice human rights are the least of there troubles. If they are given water a bit of salt and suger they wil be happy. In Zambia it sems we would rather be entertained than address matters that seriously concern us. We as a people are suposed to make gov realize that we know our rights by first respecting those in power in turn they wil respect our views. If we chose to take to the streets and throw stones everytime we dont agree they will treat you just like that thugs who need to be taken care of. Learn to appricaite if you want to be heard compromise React to what is the problem and not who you dont want:)>-

  43. #63 Sony Ericcson 2-band
You must be really spaced out. Because some overfed adult muzungus insult each other in a gathering and you call that human rights.

Those adult are busy violeting each others human rights.

No wonder you are not in your own country…

  44. Golyati I am not saying we don’t have human rights in Zambia, what I’m saying is that you are 100% Chainama material if you think Z is the “ONLY” country where you have human rights and freedom of speech. Ala 8-x

  45. Rashid you say,you believe muli bayesu. But what you say here doesnt reflect that you are a believe.Anyway may God deliver you.And you should start to worship him in truth and in Spirit.May God prosper you,and may he supply all the desires of your heart. In Jesus name!by the way bro we won last night.Viva Didier Drogba.

  46. Ba Chewe, olo muwine, you are not going anywhere cause its like your boys are out of steam brother. Chewe, im a true believer and i worship GOD day and night in truth and spirit, thus why i dont get personal but the fact remains that Zambians are coward and very sleepy.

  47. I have a question for all is it that we dont know our rights or that we always lok for the easy way out???
IE when a police officer askes for money coz we have broken the law dont you think we could go to the station and sort the problem out and take it to court to say the officer did this and that. Coz personally i have not heard of anyone do that because they are scared ati ni boma even coruption they say report it but no one does so what makes you think the gov will respect Human rights ? you have given them the power to think they are above us all

  48. Sarah Jones, how are you.Am a good boy now,i have stopped admiring you.I dont want you to be mutant because of me.Stay cool,i dont want to be missing you on this blog.

  49. On the officer bit it actualy happened to me to talking on a mobile phone and because i was rushing for a meeting i paid the lady off only later did i realize i paid double that i would have paid had i got the ticket and went to the police station

  51. 61. GOLYATI
i agree with you. this is a country where a tabloid proclaims Zambia is a christian nation in its editorial and then calls the sitting president and his cabinate ‘simple minded Hynas and jakals with their minions’ in the same editorial.

  52. Nummer 21 ‘Ich heisse Chale’, was machst du in deutchland? Bist du ein lehrgangsteilnehmer oder was? Du hast zu viel zeit fur ‘blogging’! Just pulling yr leg Chale, trying to remember my long forgotten ‘Kopf-kissen deutch’!! Have a blessed day.

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible.

  54. Please blogers, stop adding todories on comments because the make me develope gauze piples.Someone to remove them please so that i can enjot reading your nice comments. Its unfortunately i cant comment because of the nature of my work. Thanks

  55. May be human rights are for urban life. Is there a case for human rights in villages, ku mushi. People seem to be living happily there. How come our grandparents and parents never talked about the need for human rights, apart from independence from ba zungu.

  56. Okay I know I shouldn’t be doing this, but then comments posted by #88 and others may be proving Rashid etc right. What are ‘gauze piples’ (sic)? Unfortunately Pixie has a point too, so Zambians let’s wake up, read up and participate actively in civic duties! :((

  57. U guys Human Rights are sancronsact and universal.Sometimes u may say all such kind of ill-conceived nature but believe you me one day you ll be faced with a problem that will require the protection of your rights.we ve seen many who said nasty things coming and say we didn’t know that human rights are vital. It wont be that too far.
    Jack.

  58. Greetings to all my fellow blogger in the name of our saviour Jesus Christ.Iam not commenting of any topic today, iam emotionally affected by the death of that child who died after eating the poisonous wild roots.Chewe,Rashid,Baby C,supergal and many other bloggers lets not exchange strong words, but lets sit down and think of how we can help our beloved pipo in our beloved country to find some solutions on how to overcome this beast called poverty.Mind you we are One wheather Zambian, jordan, indian or white we’re one and Christ is the Head.I love you all bloggers.May our Good Lord bless you all.Amen! ^:)^^:)^^:)^

  59. Poverty is getting us places – Quote from the BBC 09.12.08 “To participate in the Homeless World Cup, players must be currently or recently homeless, an asylum seeker, in drug or alcohol rehabilitation or a street newspaper vendor.

This year’s men’s event was won by Afghanistan, while Zambia took the inaugural women’s cup.”

At least as a result of MMDs directless policies we are winning cups.
    :d/

  60. 😮 Human rights are diverse and they are only observed and respected to a degree. No country under heaven can claim to observe and respect human rights in their totality. Even in Zambia, there are levels to which human rights are observed and respected. This is what we should bear in mind. And bloggers, we must remember that anyone’s rights end where another’s begin. On human rights perspectives, every government has an obligation to explain the various human rights to the people and this is not done, hence the greatest indictment on the government

  61. Do we as Zambians have a right to show dissatisfaction with Government policy by way of demonstrations? If we do, then vice presido Kunda has a duty to educate defence minister Mpombo, et al to stop issuing threats whenever Zambians wish to express themselves against policies that impact negatively on their welbeing, viz a viz the sky-rocketing meal prices. Icho! :-c:-c

  62. ‘RICH NATIONS BUYING HUGE TRACTS OF LAND IN AFRICA TO GROW CROPS’

LONDON, Sunday – Rich nations are buying up huge tracts of land across sub Saharan Africa to grow food or bio fuels for the future according to new evidence from the United Nations Food and Agriculture organisation.

Following reports in Saturday Nation that some rich westerners were buying up some of the best stretches of Kenya’s coastline to build multi-million pound villas comes the news that it is not only prime coastal areas that are attracting western interest

According to the head of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, Jacques Diouf, a number of the western governments and corporations are buying up the ri

Mr Diouf has warned that the controversial rise in land deals could create a form of “neo-colonialism”, with poor states producing food for the rich at the expense of their own hungry people.

The UK newspaper the Guardian said that the escalating cost of the world’s food prices had already set off a second “scramble for Africa”.
This week, the South Korean firm Daewoo Logistics announced plans to buy a 99-year lease on a million hectares in Madagascar.
Its aim is to grow 5m tonnes of corn a year by 2023, and produce palm oil from a further lease of 120,000 hectares (296,000 acres), relying on a largely South African workforce. Production would be mainly earmarked for South Kore

  68. Blimey! World AIDS day, Labour Day, Human rights shingashinga! I doubt my children know there are days like this in our calander. Oh well one has to celebrate them.

    Ho Ho Ho!

  69. >-) Rashid Jones is a Zambian, who is trying to sound like a foreigner, when insulting Zambians. The World Wide Web has millions of websites, Rashid Jones choose this one cuz he/she’s a Zambian who is lucky to have left Zambia and is now seeing the world alot more clearly than most Zedians back in Z. There is no point calling your own people names.., if you want to open their “scopes” talk to them politely, those who has ears will hear you out. “TOV”!?

  70. It is not enough to keep saying what we lack as a country. What is the solution and how do we move forward! I would say HUMAN RIGHTS should be included in the school curriculum. In the next couple of years many more people will know and understand rights. So can Min of Education get down to implementing it. Human rights in other institutions such as Min of Justice should also draw an action plan. Next problem please!:-w

  71. dooms day is coming
Zambian will awaken…look Zimbabwe…..too much power was given to murderous mugabe…..raping the nations

  72. Look at the mental devastation Kaunda left Zambia with. Great but sad reading about Rich nations buying our land for commercial food growing. Sad in that these nations citizens shall not benefit, great because the land has not been used in the past. Zambia sitting on 40% of the southern african regions water resource but no incentives to remove our dumb leaders that block our path to development. God’s blessings for the new africa.

  73. 44 I respect your contribution. After Zimbabwe gets saved you can bet they shall be better than Zambia. Unless we change right now, not tomorrow now. Stop hating on yourselves, lose that pride and move forward; let us develop even when our government does not want us too.

  74. True civic Education should be part of the Education curriculum.Secondly no one in Zambia should be left behind in terms of education everyone needs to have the opportunity whether formal or informal.NGO’s, churches also need to play an active role in educating all the Zambians on civic education and their rights. Special emphasis should be given to rural areas.I look forward to the day in Zambia when everybody and anyone shall feel free to demonstrate their civic rights without fear or intimidation of dissappearing mysteriously ,being jailed or their businesses or employment being at risk. When individuals can freely stand in a public place holding a placard/poster voicing their concerns

  75. contd, I look forward to a time in Zambia when individuals do not have to wait to organise a group to exercise their civic rights, but can freely exercise their civic rights individually in public places. I look forward to a time in Zambia when bloggers, pundits and commentators do not have to use fictious names to express themselves on their civic rights because of fear of victimization but will use their real names and know that they are safe to express their views. God bless Zambia.
