The Zambia Wildlife Authority has been urged to crop crocodiles in Ukolo area in Nalolo district of Western province following rampant attacks on the villagers.

Mr Mundia Mwangawa, who is chief Imanga of Ikolo area told ZANIS in Mongu today that the crocodiles have put people’s lives and their livestock in danger.

Chief Imanga disclosed that last week a woman was caught and killed by a crocodile in Namalendele village along the Zambezi river.

The chief named the woman as Bertha Mwiya, 45, who met her fate when she went to fetch water from the Zambezi river.

The mutilated body of the deceased was later recovered from a nearby beach on the banks of the Zambezi river. He said that the crocodile is always seen at the same area where the woman was caught, causing fear among the people.

“Zawa should help us in cropping these beasts that are becoming a nuisance to people’s lives and their livestock,” said chief Ukolo.
The traditional leader has since reported the matter to the local ZAWA office in Mongu.

  1. TOO SAD. IF IT WAS A PERSON KILLING A CROCODILE, ZAWA WOULD HAVE MADE A HEADLINE THAT A POACHER HAS BEEN ARRESTED. NOW SINCE IT IS A CROCODILE KILLING PEOPLE, ZAWA WILL BUY ALL THE TIME AND ACT WHEN A TOP LEADER THREATENS THEM. YOU WILL SEE. JUST WATCH AND WAIT.

    • Of course ZAWA’s mandate is to protect & conserve wildlife!!

Whilst you & I should KNOW THAT CROCODILES DO KILL, Govt should be helping villages dig more wells & boreholes. If at a river, collect your water from near a rapid!

    • This is sad especially that there is loss of life. However, we need to understand that a river is a crocodile’s domain and just like a man who feels threatened by an intruder, the reptile will attack. What needs to be done is find our people alternative water sources and this is where MPs must come in.

  2. Government with its collaborating partners should look into the issue of putting up more bole holes to curb these deaths. We have the solutions but we fail to fully implement such projects not until more and more lives are lost. This is a sad development, something should be done to arrest the situation both ZAWA and the residents including government.
