UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) will not waste time joining loose alliances with other opposition parties but it will instead focus on recruiting new members in readiness for 2016 general elections, president Hakainde Hichilema has said.

Mr Hichilema said there was no credible political alliance to talk about and hence his party would focus on recruiting new members.

He said UPND had enough experiences on political alliances and it would not waste time on alliances which would not work.

Mr Hichilema was responding to callers in Livingstone on Monday night when he featured on Mosi-oa-tunya Radio.

“UPND won’t join alliances which won’t work. We would instead focus on recruiting new members in readiness for 2016 general elections,” Mr Hichilema said.

Mr Hichilema said only UPND was better placed to be voted into power in 2016 because the Patriotic Front (PF) Government had allegedly failed to deliver most of its campaign promises while the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) should take time to rest.

He said once elected into power, UPND would focus on delivering a people driven constitution among others.

On tourism, Mr Hichilema said he would address the visa fees and the yellow fever status which were affecting the growth of the sector.

He said Zambia could make more money if the visa fees were removed as more tourists would visit the country.

Mr Hichilema also called for the revamping of the Livingstone economy following the relocation of the provincial capital to Choma.

On the discontinuation of his case where he was charged with proposing violence during the Livingstone parliamentary by-election in February 2013, Mr Hichilema said he would not sue the State over the matter.

“Although I am entitled to sue Government for arresting and brutalising me, I will not sue the State because that will be wasting tax payers’ money if I win the case,” he said.

On tribalism, Mr Hichilema accused some sections of the media of diverting people’s attention to insinuate that UPND was tribal when it was not true.

He said unlike other political parties which had more than 10 senior leaders coming from one region, his party was not tribal as his two deputies and several other leaders were coming from different provinces.

Mr Hichilema also claimed that he was whipped together with UPND national chairperson Mutale Nalumango and others when his delegation visited Paramount Chitimukulu in Northern Province.

    • Well spoken sir. Its time all these small parties disbanded and joined UPND. What alliance will be formed when these small parties will only bring their “presidents” and their politics of the belly…….UPND, Lets Go!…. UPND, Lets Go!

    • There is no way HH will join the political alliance if there is no one in the alliance who appears to be on the “death Bed” so that he can hijack the leadership.

This boy (HH) is so selfish, full of himself and of course he knows he cant compete with Nevers Mumba or even Fr. Bwalya to lead the alliance

    • Which lord is with HH?be specific.the Lord God I know is God of unity-God the Father,God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The only alliance,HH will consider is where his ego is entertained.Anyway 2016 is coming, let’s see how many members(votes)he will rercruit.

    • Thats encouraging news. Each party for itself. Let the stronger party win the day to fight PF. I have no doubt in my mind that UPND and HH will carry the day. He has all the attributes of a good leader and above all no one can buy him off to compromise what he believes in. He just the right leader Zambia wants right now to stop Zambia from free falling inton the abyss under Sata and the PF.

Now is NOT the time for cat and mouse alliances which are sponsored by Sata to indirectly destroy and disorganise UPND. But now is then time to cast the UPND net wider so we can attract as many members as possible across the country. Now is the time to strengthen the party in CB and penetrate Northern and Luapula.

I have no doubt in my mind that no amount of rigging will stop UPND from wining in…

    • I really don’t understand this HH.In one breath he is telling MMD to rest,on the other side he is busy poaching the same MMD Members who’re supposed to be resting. What reasoning is this. This is why I keep on saying that this man(HH) has no wisdom.

  1. People of Zambia will be liberated! How? Through visas!

Can he see how Livingstone now looks?

The boy will be dumb founded when he visits Choma next time around..

  2. Keep dreaming Tonga dreamer Decotexx.HH can’t win an election coz everybody knows is a tribalist and childish politician wth personal hatred 4 his political oppenents…

    • are you not tired of this over used tribal card? wake up! HH and UPND are national in scope. people have seen that HH is the future president and there is nothing you can do about it. accusing HH of being tribal is like a desperate drowning man holding on to straws to stay afloat. thou shall not burry thy heads in sand!!

  3. HH only swallows up or takes over dead people’s parties, this mentality of being the big kid in the room is what has and will continue hindering this guy’s political career.

  4. True. This loose alliance thing if you take a very close look at it you will realise that it is dominated by opportunists like Nevers Mumba, Mike Mulongoti and others. Fr Habwalya is just in a hurry to become president with only a red card and no political base, and hence this drive to form a coalition so that he can hijack other parties’ support base. Same with Mulongoti. Nevers seeing that the political fortunes of the MMD are fast dissappearing, has gone for the alliance and adopted the Wezi Kqaunda mantra of alliance with the masses and quickly declared that he is ready to forego the presidency of the alliance so that people may look at him as the real leader and put him there at the top. Sorry guys, we see through your minds.

    • Alliance of parties won’t work. Alliance of regions will work. All regions western, north western, central, (ignore the unpopular Kabimba), southern, eastern (though our eastern wise men enjoy too much being used as toilet paper by their cousins from the north ) and even the urban ones Lusaka and Copperbelt should unite and vote for a real leader and party. The problem is that our northern friends who are many will always vote for a northerner even if that northerner is a frog or monkey or clueless hyena, they say bayama, and they will vote for him. That is the reason why Sata is today brutalising the Chitimukulu because he knows nomatter what he does, the bemba vote is his by default. then they call others tribalists.

  5. HH you must articulate strategically and systematically how you are going to re-unite provinces, langauges and Zambia and how you will deal with BA 64. Use knowledge and research based strategy. We can do this research for you. PF has disunited us. Its calling other tribes as tribalists, and others as inferios or 2nd class citizens, while Northern and Luapula provinces are heavily favoured.

  6. I listened to a programme called ‘the assignment ‘on Muvi TV recently and it featured Venon Mwanga .
One of the things Mr Mwanga said was that it would be difficult for a single opposition party to win the election in 2016 on its own without joining hands with other parties.
Mr Mwanga is a respectable and seasoned politician though he may have his own weaknesses like will all do and l think he was correct.
His advice l thought was very timely to those with personal egos because newspaper and online popularity can be very deceiving.
The Dean Mungombas had a party which gained popolarity in the press but not on the ground as such lost lamentably during elections.
l am not a politician but leave the politicians to make their own judgements and decisions.

    • Very true but how do people with only briefcase parties (fly by night political party leaders) with only red cards and no support base organise a coalition which excludes the major opposition party? Does it make sense. All they wanted was to have HH and UPND come in last so that his job is to dish out his hard earned base to this coalition of vultures at the top. If they were genuine, they would have approached UPND before that initial press conference. They may even be working with PF to dilute the opoositiona dnhave PF pass the 2016 test while smiling all the way to the bank with bloody money from the PF. Look at all the people in the forefront. Nowonder Chipimo quickly left. Chipimo has integrity somehow and thats why they couldn’t work together.

  7. HH should not cheat himself. It is his party that other parties would not want to form alliances with. They all know he is very slippery and cannot be trusted. And from the last elections, he has been consistently shooting himself in the foot (there is no foot left to shoot now). Nevers has talked about forming alliances, but I am sure the true MMDs would not want an alliance with UPND.

    • Simamba, you cannot compare SATA and HH, SATA organized and won the election in less than 10 years. UPND was born before PF and it had more MPs whilst PF had 1. The challenge is on HH and UPND to re-organize themselves.
Michael Sata is a genius and we should all be proud of him, as up coming politicians including HH should learn from his skills.

  8. “Loose Alliances?” Just the way you put it make me frown! Can you atleast sound abit diiferent from other leaders whose tone of expressing themselves is less diplomatic? I understand the Alliance may not seem the right thing to do at the moment, due to various personal ambious people in the political Zambian arena, it would be better to call a spade a spade maturely!

  9. But the bulk of the Zambian voters will never vote for you, HH, in the next, or any other future elections, because of your pent for things tribal.

  10. I think there is still time for PF to win the 2016 elections if the Zambian Constitution can be in place this year, more money in peoples pockets by creating more jobs, bringing down the prices on staple food like maize meal and other commodities, lower the fuel pump prices which in turn will reduce the transport costs and also reduce the cost of doing business in the country. He can also unite Zambians by standing up and preach peace in this country. They can better up the lives of the rural Zambians by providing clean drinking water, drugs in the hospitals/ clinics, school in the villages have teachers and motivate the nurses and teachers in the villages. Take back the fired nurses to work, by giving them the last chance

If they will not do just the few I have mentioned then forget…

  11. They can also grade rural roads for easy produce transportation and not what they say link Zambia 8000Kms. This is not priority according to me. They could have first grade rural roads which others can call feeder roads. We have roads Mwanawasa bought those graders, tippers dozers and other equipment. Last they were supposed to dedicate that project in all the provinces. Come this year working on already existing bad roads in Zambia. Next year, possibly doing now rehabilitation of buildings i.e schools and hospitals/ clinics. Providing of teachers and nurses in these rural areas and putting more drugs. The 3rd year creating the new districts because when u take people there, those people have children who need to go to school and those clinics when they sick.

    I am watching.

  12. All these small political parties, like chipimos, fr bwalya, mulupi etc should just join upnd without demand for alliance if they have the country at heart. They can then prove themselves in upnd as useful once in government. This hunger of all wanting to be presidents of Zambia should come to an end. We can only have one president at a time. In fact, I would rather be advisor to president, stress is less. Wake up Zambian politicians.

    • It won’t happen as most of these politicians have their own funders! Anyway, the so called Chipimos, Fr. Bwalyas and Milupis also have egos. It takes a serious spirit of give and take to win an election from a seating government.
Unless PF messes up big time like refusing to give the people of Zambia a new constitution, then UPND may look attractive. As it is today, if a snap election was called PF would still win due to confusion in the opposition.

  13. KEEP ON DREAMING SIR, AND WE SHALL RIDE ON YOUR FAILURE TO UNITE WITH OTHER TUNTHEMBA PARTIES..PF WILL RULE BEYOND 2016, UNLES ALL THE TUKOLOBOYIS UNITE

  14. A united alliance is better placed to unite the country and deliver a national Agenda. This country is terribly disunited on tribe lines. The current political parties, except MMD, are simply tribal groupings.

  15. Surely where are bases of these small parties? All found in Lusaka only, no membership in the rural districts, unknown in the circumference of Lusaka. Some of them are politically dead like Malimba Masheke’s Unip. Useless Alliance! Rational citizens have joined and are joining UPND.

  16. HaaaKaaaainde hihihihichiilema, kekekekeke, what a name. He looks like one who has had plastic surgery. Skin like hippo!!! Anyway, he will form government in 2046, it is not far.

  17. @Analyst – I agree with you totally. I have not listened to the said programme – but it is obvious that no single opposition party can nor will win the 2016 elections.
Sata and PF know this all too well hence the taunts that there is no credible opposition in Zambia.
The problem is ego’s – big ego’s. Men should learn to listen to reason.

    • @cindy

A man or woman without an ego lacks serious ambitions and as a result achieves totally nothing apart from just being used as ladder by others to reach greater heights.

If you look at all the great leaders of this world , they achieved all they because of personal egos . They put themselves up for the difficult tasks no matter daunting and dangerous they were. And in the end they won and achieved their goals to become who they wanted.

If it wasn’t for his personal selfish ego and dwindling fortunes Sata would not have tried every trick in the book to become president. Unfortunately, it has ended at satisfying himself only and nothing else. See how he is flip flopping like a yoyoy trying to hold on to power at what ever cost.

In the end HH’s selfless ego is…

    • When we talk about egos we should try to distinguish between selfish ego like that manifesting itself in Sata and his PF and HH’s selfless ego. HH wants to bring real change and show the nation how to build clean sustainable wealth without cutting corners.
I have a strong personal ego to achieve greater things in life. Its what drives me ahead. Otherwise I would not have made plans to find myself here in the UK learning and doing what makes UK great.

My advice to you all is, follow your personal egos seriously if you want to achieve big. This world is being made a better place to live because of great inventions and innovations driven by selfless personal egos.

All the leaders of those brief case political parties have their personal egos, selfless or selfish. Its up to us to…

  18. My formula for the alliance is this:

Choose 1 leader who will become president. All the other leaders in the alliance to stand/contest parliamentary seats. In this way, they become relevant to the government of the day as legislators. They may also become ministers in the new government. Even with the old constitution, these opposition leaders can become relevant to the political dispensation of the country.

  19. If you continue to speak like this then people will start to listen. level headedness is all that is required.

  20. If you came to me for interviews for a job, you would not get the job with that attitude. Firstly it shows lack of leadership and management skills. If you had good leadership worth showing a case for to the Zambians, organizing Zambians in oppositions, should have been a good call and cause for a fight for and especially that you claim that the current leadership is not good for Zambia. Without getting organised as opposition, you will never win, and especially yourself. Sad that all you are there for is simply to ensure your businesses going forward in the name of opposition. Come MMD did it against KK, you can do it to if their is cause. Do it for Zambia. Waba intweeno bakaamba

  21. HH will regret. Have toured many provinces, he is not popular has Sata was, and Sata won the election with less than 50%. May be F. Bwalya who started his party few months/years ago is even popular on the Copperbelt than HH. Anyway All the best HH.
